ITV News cameras catch 200 cyclists running a red light in just one hour

ITV News3 days ago
ITV News cameras have caught 200 cyclists jumping red lights at rush hour in the space of just 60 minutes.
We monitored a busy cycle Lane on Victoria Embankment opposite Blackfriars station between 8:20am and 9:20am.
On average three to four cyclists ignored red lights every minute and more than half failed to stop.
Transport for London advises cyclists to follow the Highway Code and warns cyclists may be fined £50 for going through a red light.Since the start of 2025, 284 cyclists in the City of London have been fined for failing to stop at lights.Gerard Griffiths is a road safety campaigner and says that more needs to be done to make dangerous cyclists realise the potentially fatal consequences of their actions. He said: "There's a reason why cars and motorbikes and lorries stop at red lights - because they have to.
"They know there are consequences if they go through them. Bikes just don't seem to have that same sort of attitude or people that cycle."Gerard's mum died after colliding with a cyclist travelling at 29mph in a 20mph zone in Regent's Park.Cycling has boomed in popularity in London over recent years and is a clean and efficient mode of transport.
HS2 has suffered 'significant cost' from legal challenges by public bodies
Simon Munk from London Cycling Campaign told ITV News London that some of the cycling lanes in London are overcapacity and says statistically more pedestrians ignore traffic signals.'I think it's important to understand that we shouldn't be accepting cyclists jumping red lights, but we should be working out why. We should be working out what the problem is and fixing it,' he said.'This is annoying, and it's really deeply hostile to pedestrians. These people shouldn't be doing it, but it's not actually statistically very dangerous,' Mr Munk added.Cyclists are responsible for fewer than 1% of the pedestrian deaths on British roads and they are far more likely to be killed than to kill, according to campaign group Cycling UK.A bill is currently going through parliament to bring the 1861 law up to date.Under the current law, if cyclists strike and kill a pedestrian, offenders can be imprisoned for no more than two years under the ancient law.The proposed amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill means dangerous cyclists could face up to 14 years in prison.Tory MP Iain Duncan Smith has campaigned on the issue and said the proposal was not "anti-cycling" but is intended to ensure safety and accountability on the roads. ITV News spoke to pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists who all agreed on one thing - that more needs to be done to ensure peop le obey the rules of the road.

Former Reform UK MP mistakes charity rowers for 'illegal immigrants'

A former Reform UK MP has admitted mistaking a charity rowing crew for 'illegal migrants' but stopped short of an apology. Rupert Lowe, an Independent in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, posted on X last night a photograph of a boat off the coast of his coastal constituency. He wrote: 'Dinghies coming into Great Yarmouth, RIGHT NOW. Authorities alerted, and I am urgently chasing. 'If these are illegal migrants, I will be using every tool at my disposal to ensure these individuals are deported.' Except the authorities had nothing to chase – it wasn't 'illegal migrants', as Lower suspected, but rowers raising money for a motor neurone disease charity. ROW4MND – consisting of Matthew Parker, Mike Bates, Aaron Kneebone and Liz Wardley – are rowing from Land's End to John O'Groats. The Coastguard contacted them and asked if they could see a dinghy nearby, only to realise the official was asking about their boat. Bates, a former Royal Marine and British record holder for rowing across the Atlantic solo, looked at the shore only to see a dozen people staring at them. Marine Traffic, a monitoring website, indicates that the boat was drifting by Great Yarmouth just after 8pm. The crew were contacted again several hours later because police had 'asked if they could send a lifeboat out to check who we were'. After a friend forwarded Mike the politician's social media post, everything clicked. Mike said: 'We found it hilarious. I've not been mistaken for a migrant before. 'The best comment was the one asking where the Royal Navy were when you need them. I'm a former Royal Marine, so the Royal Navy were on the boat.' He added: 'But it was almost like a vigilante-style, people following us down the beach. 'They hadn't twigged that we were parallel to the shore for hours and not trying to land.' Lowe realised he made the gaffe this morning, posting on X: 'Good news. False alarm! The unknown vessel was charity rowers, thank goodness. 'As a well done to the crew, I'll donate £1,000 to their charity – raising money for MND. Keep going, and watch out for any real illegal migrants!' The MP said his office received a 'huge number' of complaints about his mistake. Good news. False alarm! The unknown vessel was charity rowers, thank a well done to the crew, I'll donate £1,000 to their charity – raising money for going, and watch out for any real illegal migrants! We received a huge number of urgent complaints from… — Rupert Lowe MP (@RupertLowe10) August 8, 2025 'I make no apologies over being vigilant for my constituents. It is a national crisis,' he added. ROW4MND have raised £107,515 so far, with the team now just off the coast of Cromer, according to their website. They plan to row their return journey next year, from California to Hawaii in 2027 and New York to London in 2028, to raise £57million. Family sources claim Mark Gibbon, 62, has secretly been dating Jasmine Wyld - the mother of his grandchildren - for years. But despite reports of a love affair, both Gibbon and Wyld, 33, denied to cops they were a couple. Polk County Sheriff's Office told The Sun the pair had been quizzed on the status of their relationship. A detective asked Gibbon and mum-of-two Wyld "about their relationship to determine if the incident would be classified as domestic violence". They both denied being in a romantic relationship, however. It comes after a family source told the Daily Mail how the pair had grown close after Gibbon split from his partner and Wyld split from his son Alex. The insider claimed: "Mark and Jasmine have been seeing each other for a few years, but they've never admitted it. "[The couple] do an awful lot together and they go away on holiday with the children a couple of times every year." Gibbon is divorced from his wife and lives alone at a £800,000 semi-detached home in Beaconsfield he purchased in 2023. Wyld - a hairdresser - separated from Gibbon's son Alex, 34, back in 2021. Just two years after they separated, Alex, 34, was jailed for trying to run over his dad in a £80,000 Porsche Cayenne in Beaconsfield, Bucks. As well as assaulting his father, Alex also pleaded guilty to harassing ex-wife Wyld. Alex was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court to 25 months in jail, a 36-month disqualification from driving, a five-year restraining order, plus a surcharge. The dad was released from jail around six months ago and went to move in with his mum, who had divorced Gibbon some years earlier. Alex and his father also became embroiled in a public row in 2023 after Alex left his dad's business for an unknown reason. The family source confirmed that Alex and Gibbon no longer speak. They added: "He feels an awful betrayal at how his dad has struck up a relationship with the mother of his two children." 6 Alex also pleaded guilty to harassing Wyld Credit: Facebook 6 Gibbon and Wyld have been pictured together on several occasions Credit: Facebook 6 Wyld claims Gibbon tried to drown her in Florida Credit: Facebook Gibbon - a lighting technician, who runs his own firm called MRG Lighting - is now being held in Polk County Jail and is due in court next week over the attempted murder charge levelled against him. He and Wyld were on holiday at the Solterra Resort in Devenport, near Disney World, Florida with Wyld's two children - Gibbon's grandkids. The reported couple started arguing over the "stipulations of his wilL" while by the pool, according to US police. Gibbon then pushed Wyld's head "under the water and held her down multiple times", the arrest affidavit claims. The mum told cops she "could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown". Police say Wyld was forced to "fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water but he kept pushing her back under". Her nine-year-old daughter then leapt to her mother's defence but was pushed away by Gibbon, it is claimed. Wyld is reported to have called out to two women in the distance and screamed at them to call 911. Gibbon now faces one count of attempted murder and two counts of battery. When questioned, Gibbon allegedly admitted to pushing Jasmine underwater, but insisted he hadn't been trying to drown her. The grandad is due in court on Monday.
