Aussie energy company apologises to 400,000 customers over now deleted website claims
A major Australian energy company has made an apology to over 400,000 retail gas and electricity customers over key claims advertised on its website. In a statement, EnergyAustralia confirmed it was terminating Go Neutral, which it had spruiked as an environmentally friendly option.
The statement was published on Monday, after EnergyAustralia reached a settlement with conservation group Parents for Climate, which had accused it of "greenwashing" the harm done by fossil fuels. Federal Court action launched in 2023 accused the company of misleading or deceptive conduct contrary to the Australian Consumer Law in relation to its carbon offset claims.
'Today, EnergyAustralia acknowledges that carbon offsetting is not the most effective way to assist customers to reduce their emissions and apologises to any customer who felt that the way it marketed its Go Neutral products was unclear,' the energy retailer said.
'EnergyAustralia has now shifted its focus to direct emissions reductions.'
The Go Neutral project began in 2016, with EnergyAustralia advertising that customers could offset their emissions at no cost to them. After households opted in, the company claimed it would calculate emissions used and make the home's energy "carbon neutral" by buying carbon offset units to support projects in countries including India, Brazil and Australia.
EnergyAustralia was ranked as the nation's third-highest emitter for the 2023-24 year, producing 16.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions. In NSW, Victoria and South Australia it operates two coal-fired and four gas-fired power plants.
In Monday's statement, the company explained that customers who opted into Go Neutral were still using energy 'sourced predominantly from fossil fuels' and that "greenhouse gases are harmful to the environment and contribute to climate change".
'Burning fossil fuels creates greenhouse gas emissions that are not prevented or undone by carbon offsets. This could have been made clearer to customers,' it admitted.

Equity Generation Lawyers, which represented Parents for Climate said the settlement highlights a need for companies to ensure their environmental claims 'stack up'.
'As part of the settlement, EnergyAustralia has acknowledged our client's key factual argument: that carbon offsets do not undo the climate harms of burning fossil fuels. That means that, even with carbon offsetting, Go Neutral customer's energy usage still contributed to climate change,' principal lawyer David Hertzberg said.
Parents for Climate described the outcome as a 'groundbreaking resolution'.
'Parents have spent too long trying to make careful, considered decisions about where their money goes, especially in a cost-of-living crisis, but corporate greenwashing has pushed them off track,' its CEO Nic Seton said.
'We launched this case as it's deeply frustrating and emotionally exhausting to navigate a maze of vague claims and false promises. Greenwashing undermines trust and gives the dangerous illusion that coal and gas pollution is being addressed when they're not.'

Tradie's 'cheap and easy' solution to Aussie housing problem
The ongoing housing crisis is a topic of conversation on the tip of most Australians' lips, whether you're a renter or a property owner. Many are quick to point to high demand, low supply and skyrocketing prices as causes of the problem, but few can come up with solutions that keep all stakeholders happy. A former tradie has been quietly working away on an answer to the problem, which costs under $100,000 and takes just 12 days to build. Brad Busuttil, an electrician turned business owner, transforms shipping containers into homes. The low-cost alternative to traditional housing won't be right for everyone, but select Aussies are snapping them up to put on their land, and freeing up housing stock elsewhere while doing so. Brad, from Victoria, told Yahoo News he built his first shipping container home "for a little bit of fun" before realising just how "cheap and quick and easy it was to do". With a background in affordable housing, he decided to offer the product to the public and has been astounded by their popularity. He now sells container homes to Aussies around the country through his business, Deluxe Tiny Homes, which cost between $45,000 to $70,000 to buy. This year, he's already delivered 15 tiny homes to clients around the country, with his main customers fitting into three different demographics. "There are investors, so people who have plots of land they don't know what to do with and don't want to do a half-million-dollar build," he explained. "There are then people who are about to build a new home, and rather than rent out another property for 12 months, they pop it in the backyard and live there. The third one, which is most common, is people with elderly parents close to retirement age," he said. Brad explained that the container homes are built "exactly like a normal house", with the same set of standards as a new build house. "That way we have no issues," he said. The shipping containers are brand new, and are "heavily insulated" and water sealed before framing, plastering, floorboards, as well as a kitchen, laundry and bathroom are installed. The entire build is done off-site, and delivered, where customers are given instructions on how to connect the electrical and plumbing. With the housing crisis an ever-present threat, he believes it's a short-term option for those in need. "People can't get into houses, this is a good short-term solution," he said, explaining that while the homes are "comfortable", they're " not massive". Despite admitting they are not going to be a long-term solution for most people, Brad believes his tiny houses will "outlive any of us". He'd like to see the concept used as "part of a suite" of solutions, but not a "reactive response" to a lack of housing supply. Davies believes that one factor exacerbating the housing problem in Australia is that, for the most part, people want larger homes. But smaller, and even tiny houses, are "generally something that needs to be explored more fully in the suite of housing solutions", he said. Davies said he wouldn't underestimate the value of the low time and financial investment needed to build a tiny home, but what he doesn't want to see is it being used as a "substitute for poor planning outcomes", and a longer-term solution is still required. So, what would a longer-term solution look like? Dr Heather Shearer, an engineering and built environment academic at Griffith University, believes that this comes as an increase in medium-density zoning in Australia's big cities. "It's what they call the missing middle," she said. These properties include smaller townhouses and duplexes as opposed to larger family homes or apartment complexes. Rio Tinto in bailout talks for Australian aluminium smelter, AFR reports
SYDNEY (Reuters) -Global miner Rio Tinto is in talks with Australian federal and state governments about a multibillion-dollar bailout for its struggling Tomago aluminium smelter in New South Wales state, the Australian Financial Review reported. The newspaper, citing sources it did not name, reported late on Friday that talks centred on the smelter's electricity contract for 2026 to 2029 and federal production tax credits. Rio and the offices of New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment on the report. The future of the facility, majority owned by Rio, has been uncertain for months due in part to spiralling energy costs, according to the report. In February, Rio, the world's largest iron ore producer, said it would decide the smelter's future by mid-year. The facility about 125 km (80 miles) north of state capital Sydney uses around 10% of New South Wales' power supply to produce 590,000 tonnes of aluminium per year. In addition to Rio, it is owned by CSR and Hydro Aluminium. Rio Tinto Eyes Bailout for Australian Aluminum Smelter, AFR Says
Rio Tinto Group is seeking a multibillion-dollar government bailout for its Tomago aluminum smelter — Australia's largest electricity user — due to spiraling energy costs, the Australian Financial Review reported. The talks center on the smelter's electricity contract for 2026 to 2029 and the federal government's production tax credits, the newspaper reported Saturday, citing unidentified sources familiar with the discussions. One person interviewed by the AFR said any bailout package will likely be 'more sophisticated' than a direct subsidy and that talks are mainly being conducted with the New South Wales state government.
