Pro-Kannada group files complaint against Kamal Haasan for controversial remark

India Today29-05-2025

A pro-Kannada group, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), has filed a formal complaint against actor Kamal Haasan for his controversial remark on the Kannada language and has sought legal action against him. The complaint states that Haasan's statement, 'Kannada is born from Tamil', has allegedly 'hurt the Kannada language and the sentiments of Kannadigas.'KRV president Praveen Shetty, in the complaint submitted on Wednesday at the RM Nagar Police Station in Bengaluru, called the statement 'unlawful' and implied that it goes against the harmony between the two states.advertisementThe actor stirred controversy after stating that the 'Kannada language was born out of Tamil' during the audio launch of his latest film Thug Life in Chennai on May 24.
Haasan faced severe political and online backlash after a snippet of his statement was widely circulated on social media. In a rare show of unity, Congress and BJP leaders in Karnataka condemned the actor for his 'untrue' remarks. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called him 'poor Kamal Haasan,' while Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka referred to him as a 'mental patient.'The actor, however, downplayed the row and said he would not apologise for something spoken out of affection. 'What I said was said out of love, and a lot of historians have taught me language history. I didn't mean anything,' he told the media in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He also added that political figures often lack the expertise to comment on such matters.Tune InTrending Reel

SC seeks Karnataka govt's response to plea over non-release of 'Thug Life' in State theatres

New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday sought the Karnataka government's response to a plea seeking protection from threats against the screening of Kamal Haasan's film 'Thug Life'. Considering the urgency of the matter, a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan issued notices to the Karnataka government, the State police, Raaj Kamal Films International Private Limited and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) seeking their responses to the plea. During the hearing, the counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that no action has been taken by the state authorities in Karnataka despite violent threats being issued against linguistic minorities in the State. 'No FIR has been registered. They have joined hands with extremist elements', advocate A Velan stated. After hearing the matter, the Court sought the responses of the aforesaid authorities and listed the matter to be heard next week. On Monday, the top court had refused to urgently hear Reddy's plea and had asked the petitioner to approach the concerned High Court. Subsequently, the matter was listed before the top court to be heard today (Friday). During the hearing on Monday, counsel appearing for the petitioner stated that a law-and-order situation is arising in the State, as cinema halls are receiving threats from certain fringe elements. Further, the counsel had stated that threats are being issued that the theatres will be set on fire. Hence, theatres in the State sought protection from the top court. The issue arose over an alleged statement recently made by actor Kamal Hassan, which said 'Kannada was born out of Tamil'. As per the petitioners' plea, there is an effective ban on the CBFC-certified film Thug Life in Karnataka, which is caused by violent threats from private groups, and the state authorities have failed to take action in this regard. The plea argued that such inaction violates the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. This right applies not only to filmmakers but also to the public who want to view films. The top court will hear the matter next week. (ANI)

Karnataka Caste Census U-Turn Sparks Row; SDPI Terms Move a ‘Betrayal' of Backward Classes

Bengaluru: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has launched a sharp attack on the Congress-led Karnataka government for its decision to scrap the caste census conducted in 2015, terming the move a 'betrayal' of the state's backward classes, Dalits, SC/STs, and minorities. The original survey, conducted by the Kempanna Commission, involved 1.6 lakh government officials and cost the exchequer ₹165 crore. Though the final report was submitted earlier this year, the government has now declared it unusable on grounds of 'inaccuracy' and 'outdated data.' Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instead ordered a new caste census, to be completed in 90 days. Calling the explanation 'vague and unconvincing,' SDPI accused the Congress of succumbing to pressure from dominant caste leaders, particularly from the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities, who, the party alleges, have no strong electoral loyalty to Congress. 'Those who stood with the Congress since its inception are now being ignored,' SDPI said, demanding a judicial inquiry into the failure of the previous survey and the immediate public release of the report. 'Public money and administrative resources are not meant for political experiments,' the party added, reaffirming its commitment to the cause of genuine social justice and transparency.
