Lowry and McIlroy finish on positive note at BMW as Schauffele laments 'playing like ass'
Lowry rebounded from a Saturday of struggles at the BMW Championship to shoot a closing 67 on Sunday, fully eight shots better than his score the previous day. It left the Offaly man on one-over for the tournament and hovering around a tie for 23rd with the destination of the $20m purse still up in the air, Ryder Cup teammate Robert MacIntyre and world No.1 Scottie Scheffler battling for the biggest prize.
Lowry opened birdie-birdie and found two more on the back nine with just a single bogey on the tricky par-3 17th at Caves Valley, the second stop on the FedEx Cup Playoffs schedule. With the top 30 making it through to next week's season finale in Atlanta, Lowry was comfortable inside that cohort 23rd as some of those on the bubble fought for the precious last places.
McIlroy's position was even more secure, so much so that he skipped last week's opening Playoff tournament. He closed his BMW campaign with a even-par 70 but it was far from a mundane Sunday, the scorecard featuring plenty of splashes of colour.
McIlroy birdied the short third hole but with his driving proving erratic, back-to-back double bogeys arrived on the fifth and sixth. The Holywood man found his first fairway on the eighth but then suffered from a mud ball and skewed his approach into the rough for another bogey. However McIlroy dug in and found five birdies and just one more blemish on the way home, his 70 leaving him on three-under overall, inside the top 15.
At least McIlroy has next week to continue his Ryder Cup build-up. The man directly behind him in golf's global rankings, world No.3 Xander Schauffele will miss the Tour Championship for the first time in eight years after a closing 66 wasn't enough to help him pull off an unlikely climb into the Top 30.
After winning two majors in 2024, Schauffele has been out of sorts this season, without a win since his Open triumph in Troon last July. "There's nothing worse than trying your hardest and playing like ass," the Californian said. "It's the worst combo. Some of us do it, some of us don't. It's been a while since I have, and I did it for a few weeks now, and it sucked.
"It was mentally a long season for me even though it was short. So physically I feel a lot better, which is a plus. No sort of recurring injury, which is a plus.
"I feel like I just need to sort of reset a little bit, cool off a little bit, and just get back to a healthy mental place where I want to sit down and work really hard again. Right now I'm mentally a little tapped."

Rory McIlroy picked up a cheque for €376,977 as he finished in a tie for 12th position at the BMW Championship in Maryland. With only two shots separating them and two holes left to play, MacIntyre could only watch as Scheffler executed an extraordinary chip from the rough, effectively sealing his victory on the penultimate hole. It was a tough pill to swallow for MacIntyre, who had created his own memorable moment on the final hole on Saturday when he sunk a 41-foot putt to maintain his significant lead. In pursuit of the win that would have guaranteed his spot in Europe's Ryder Cup team, McIntyre got off to a disastrous start on Sunday. However, Scheffler was also far from flawless, a missed putt restoring the Scot's two-stroke lead after three. The American drew level on the fifth hole after MacIntyre found a bunker with his approach shot, and Scheffler seemed unstoppable as he moved two clear on the 13th. MacIntyre managed to close the gap once more, but the 15th hole proved crucial as the Oban man failed to capitalise on Scheffler finding a bunker with his approach shot. I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have the last couple days." A closing round of 67 propelled Tommy Fleetwood into a share of fourth position behind American Maverick McNealy, whilst Harry Hall, who began Sunday in a tie for fourth, slipped back with a disappointing 70 to end up in sixth spot.

World number one Scottie Scheffler fired a sizzling final round of three-under-par 67 to claim the BMW Championship and secure a fifth win on the PGA Tour this season. The Texan, who won two majors in 2025, overturned a four-shot deficit, held overnight by Scotland's Robert MacIntyre. Scheffler, who finished on 15 under, had a mid-round stumble but six birdies, including a long chip-in birdie on 17 was enough to see him claim a two-shot victory over MacIntyre. The Scotsman could not emulate Justin Rose's success last week, stumbling out of the gate with three birdies in the first five holes. Leaderboard Rory McIlroy will return to East Lake in second spot in the FedEx Cup standings as he finished in a tie for 13th place. The Northern Irish golfer finished with a final round of level-par 70 in which he made two double bogeys, two bogeys and six birdies in a rollercoaster finish to his week. Shane Lowry had a strong Sunday shooting a three-under-par round of 67 and will enter the season finale in 24th spot. The Offaly native finished on one-over-par for the tournament after his low round of the week that left him joint-23rd.

Scheffler produces a breathtaking birdie to seal brilliant BMW Championship win
Scottie Scheffler hit one of the most stunning shots of his career to seal his fifth win of a sparkling season. Carrying a one-shot lead over playing partner Robert MacIntyre on the penultimate hole of the BMW Championship in Maryland, the World No.1 found thick rough under the pin on the hugely testing 17th of Caves Valley. In a situation where it looked like he could be struggling to make a par and retain his lead, Scheffler instead produced a moment of pure magic. He chopped his chip high to the crest on the green and watched as the ball skipped forward and rolled in the direction of the pin before slowing just enough to take its turn towards the cup. "When it gets to this timeof year it can be a bit tiring. I think it has lot to do with the intensity I bring to each round. I try not to take days off. I try not to take shots off." MacIntyre was trying to pull off a daunting feat at Caves Valley — complete a pillar-to-post victory having stormed into the lead with an opening 62 but hold off the inevitable Scheffler in the process. In sweltering conditions the big leftie was sweating early. MacIntyre bogeyed the opening hole after Scheffler had birdied it and his four-shot cushion was instantly cut to two. In truth MacIntyre rarely looked fully in the groove and bogeys at the second and fifth allowed Scheffler to take the lead. But the scoring slowed and the two Ryder Cup opponents stayed within touching distance throughout with others behind like Tommy Fleetwood and Sam Burns perhaps sensing an unlikely opening, especially when Scheffler wobbled with bogeys at 12 and 14, the second coming after an inexplicable three-putt. However the World No.1 has mostly looked imperious over the past two years and he duly returned to form with a birdie on the 15th and then that moment of genius on the 17th.
