As part of the nationwide drive, in Himachal Pradesh mock drill 'Operation Abhyas' was held in Shimla city on Wednesday at two locations ---DC office and Sanjauli parking area. Deputy commissioner Anupam Kashyap said that the mock drill was organised on time. (HT Photo)
This drill at the DC office was organised due to a previous fire incident in the office of the District Disaster Management Authority while mock drill for airstrike was held in Sanjauli.
Deputy commissioner Anupam Kashyap said that the mock drill was organised on time. All the stakeholders who participated in this drill played an excellent role. Members of civil defence were also a part of this drill. He said that the main objective of this drill is to strengthen civil defense.
'There are 210 volunteers with civil defence in Shimla and a drive is already on for enrollment,' said DC.
Superintendent of police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said, 'The drill was organised at the district level. In future, we are all ready for rescue operation in case of disaster. More and more people will be encouraged to join civil defence. Apart from this, the communication system will be strengthened in case of disaster. At the same time, siren system will be installed at designated places.'
After the mock drill in Shimla city, feedback was taken from the officers.

According to authorities, most of those who died were young people, both men and women, and several among them were students. Chief minister Siddaramaiah noted that the Bengaluru stadium has a capacity for 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people had come. 'The match happened last evening (Tuesday), and today (Wednesday) this event was organised by the cricket association, so no one had expected so many people to come.' Explaining the exact reason behind the stampede, Siddaramaiah said the tragedy resulted from poor coordination and overwhelming turnout. "There are small gates. The people entered through the gates. They have also broken the gates, so a stampede has taken place. Nobody had expected so much of a crowd to come. Prima facie, it looks like that. I am not saying nothing has happened. The inquiry will bring out facts,' he added. 'There were over 1.5 lakh people at the gates, banging and eventually breaking through in some places. The attempt to enter the stadium resulted in the stampede.' 'It was a crowd beyond what anyone expected,' said deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, calling the situation 'absolutely uncontrollable.' 'The crowd was beyond our control. Even though we had deployed force, it was too much,' a senior police officer told HT on condition of anonymity. Police said around 50,000 people had gathered within a 1-km radius of the stadium, and many tried to push through gates or climb over barriers. 'We had to resort to a lathi charge at some points. The problem was that the stadium gates were narrow, and the pressure of the crowd caused the tragedy,' the official added. Police were also seen using mild force to manage the swelling crowds. Among other reasons, there was confusion over event plans as the Bengaluru traffic police announced in the morning that there would be no victory parade – only a celebration inside the stadium. However, at 3:14 PM, the RCB management posted on social media that a parade would indeed be held at 5 PM, followed by stadium celebrations. They also announced limited free passes online. This mixed messaging confused fans, many of whom showed up at the stadium without tickets or hoping to get passes. 'In the morning, we were told that passes could be purchased. Later, we were told they were being distributed at the stadium. So like me, many landed up here hoping to get a pass,' Rakesh Prakash, a software engineer among the crowd, told HT. The state government has ordered a full inquiry into the incident. Thousands of fans began arriving at M Chinnaswamy Stadium hours before the event. Anticipation was high as RCB was set to celebrate its maiden IPL title with a public victory parade. Shortly after gates were opened, the stadium reached its full seating capacity. Officials subsequently closed the gates to prevent further entry. With tens of thousands still gathered outside, three main gates—Gate 3, Gate 12, and Gate 18—were shut. Unable to enter, fans began pressing forward, causing panic and overcrowding at the barricades. As fans tried to force their way in, a deadly crush unfolded. Several people were trampled, and many more suffered injuries in the chaos. Around 100,000 people assembled at Dr Ambedkar Road near Vidhana Soudha to greet the RCB team. The team was felicitated by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah before proceeding to the stadium. The RCB team reached the stadium amid loud cheers and continued fan frenzy. The team departed around 6:30 PM, once news of the tragedy began to spread. Initial reports confirmed two deaths. As rescue operations continued, the death toll rose to 11, with 47 others reported injured. Ambulances and emergency responders were rushed to the scene.

12-year-old boy found dead inside bouncing castle in Lucknow's Hussainabad
In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old boy was found dead inside a Mickey Mouse-themed bouncing castle in Hussainabad area under Thakurganj late on Tuesday evening, police said on Wednesday. According to a police statement, the body was discovered in Hussainabad area on Durga Devi Marg under the jurisdiction of Satkhanda police outpost around 8pm on Tuesday. 'Local authorities were alerted by residents, after which a police team promptly reached the site. The child was found lying motionless inside the ride,' Thakurganj SHO Shrikant Rai said. 'The body was discovered when the ride was reopened for use. There were visible scratches and abrasion marks on his abdomen,' the SHO said, adding; 'Prima facie, the injuries appear to have been caused by the machine (air filler) used to inflate the bouncing castle, and the boy may have been trapped inside it.' Preliminary investigations suggest the child died after being caught in the structure of the inflatable ride. There were no immediate signs of foul play, though further inquiry is ongoing, the police statement said. The deceased was identified as Kalmuddin, son of Kallu, a native of Hardoi district. He was currently living with his sister in Thakurganj area and was sold bottled water around the Clock Tower in Hussainabad area, the SHO said, adding the body has been sent for the post-mortem examination and efforts are ongoing to contact the family members of the deceased. 'Further legal procedures are being followed, and the law and order situation at the site remains normal,' police said. Locals raised questions about the safety and maintenance standards of temporary amusement setups, especially those operated without proper regulation in densely populated localities. Sources told HT that the ride is privately owned and has been operating illegally in the area for a long time, with the Hussainabad and Allied Trust and sections of the district administration responsible for managing the Hussainabad zone looking the other way.

Sweets distributed on Telangana Formation Day suspected to be cause of food poisoning at IMH Erragadda
Sweets distributed to inmates at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Erragadda, as part of Telangana Formation Day celebrations on Monday (June 2, 2025) are suspected to have caused a major food poisoning incident that left 92 people ill, and one dead. The Non-DC ward of the hospital, where the sweets were served, reported a sudden spike in complaints of nausea, vomiting, and uneasiness shortly after 6 p.m on June 2. As of Wednesday (June 4), 74 patients remained under observation at IMH, while 18 were shifted to Osmania General Hospital for further care. Hospital officials said they are in a stable condition. On Wednesday morning, the hospital premises slowly returned to routine as doctors resumed duties and patients' attendants waited anxiously. Meanwhile, senior health officials, including Director of Medical Education A. Narendra Kumar and Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Commissioner Ajaya Kumar, visited the hospital for a detailed review and held a brief meeting with hospital superintendent Anitha Rayirala before inspecting the affected ward. Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha, who arrived at IMH to take stock of the situation, told reporters that preliminary findings suggest the sweets distributed on the occasion could be the cause. 'Initial reports indicate that the water supply is largely safe. There is a strong possibility that this was a case of food poisoning due to the sweets. We have terminated the diet contractor's services as a precautionary measure,' he said. Samples of the food and water have been collected for laboratory analysis. An internal inquiry is underway, and a detailed report is expected in the coming days, the minister said.
