Football players are 'meat' to clubs, former West Ham striker Michail Antonio has declared in a fierce defence of Alexander Isak's actions in pushing for a move to Liverpool.
Antonio, who left the Hammers as a free agent this summer - eight months after he was involved in a potentially life-altering car accident - has claimed that 'loyalty in the game has really gone' and queried why players should remain devoted to their employers when it is no longer reciprocated.
His strong statements come amid the reported deterioration of relations between Isak and his current club Newcastle, who have been steadfast in their determination to keep the Swedish striker despite his desire to join the Premier League champions this summer.
The Swede is not training with his team-mates and will not play in the Premier League opener at Aston Villa this weekend after letting it be known to boss Eddie Howe and the club he wants to move to Anfield.
The manner in which Isak has agitated for what would be a British record transfer has been criticised in some quarters, but Antonio has defended his fellow professional and provided an insight into the psyche of today's stars.
'As a player, loyalty in the game has really gone,' he told FourFourTwo. 'Obviously I was at West Ham for 10 years, like all these players, that [loyalty] doesn't really last anymore, and I feel rightly so, because end of the day, clubs no longer treat players like they used to either.

'So, because of that reason, why should the player be loyal to a club? I understand being loyal to fans, but being loyal to a club when he's going to try and better himself and better his life and try and achieve things that he's not going to achieve at another club.
'So, it is what it is. For me, I feel like what he's done is trying to better himself and do what he can to better himself.'
Following his remarkable recovery from an accident that required him to be cut loose by emergency services after being trapped in the wreckage for more than 45 minutes, Antonio was unable to agree terms on a new deal with the Hammers.
After being taken hospital, thew Jamaica international learned that his leg was badly broken, with his femur shattering in four places. His impressive recovery saw him training just four months after the collision.
The 35-year-old has been adamant that he wants to return to competitive top-flight action and continue his career, but remains without a club during this transfer window.
His perspective is particularly important given his recent ordeal and claims that players are treated are dehumanised carry serious weight.
'We are meat to them,' added Antonio. 'As soon as we start going stale, it's time to sell or throw away. Before, if a player was at a club for a few years, you see the human side of that player - now it's all about money, and how much money can they make [for] the club?
'And that's where it's got to, so if a club is going to think about the money side of things, why shouldn't a player?'

The decision on whether to sell Isak rests with the club's Saudi owners. The message from the top remains that he is not for sale, but there is also an acceptance among some that an exit, on Newcastle's terms, could be best for the club going forward, which is why they pursued the likes of Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko as replacements for the 25-year-old.
Liverpool are waiting for Newcastle to sign a striker before returning with an improved offer, after their opening £110m bid was rejected last week.

But the events of Monday now confirm the footballer has only just asked for her hand in marriage, which begs the question - why did it take so long? Mayorga's lawyer had asked the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a federal judge's dismissal of the case in Las Vegas in June 2022 and reopen the civil lawsuit she filed in 2018. They argued U.S. District Judge Jennifer Dorsey should not have rejected Mayorga's attempts to unseal and make public the confidentiality agreement she signed in 2010 in accepting payments from Ronaldo. A three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based appellate court disagreed. It also rejected their argument that the judge abused her discretion by dismissing the case with prejudice, which prevented Mayorga from re-filing the case, and took the unusual step of levying a $335,000 (£267,450) fine against her lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall. 'The district court clearly recognised the gravity of dismissing the case and accordingly provided a thorough analysis, amply supported by factual findings,' Judge Johnnie Rawlinson wrote in a six-page opinion. In dismissing the case in Nevada, Dorsey sanctioned Stovall for 'bad faith,' saying he had improperly attempted to use documents that were leaked or stolen in a cyberattack to pursue Mayorga's case. Stovall told the 9th Circuit panel during oral arguments in October that Mayorga wasn't bound by the confidentiality agreement because Ronaldo or his associates violated it before the German news outlet, Der Spiegel, published an article in April 2017 titled 'Cristiano Ronaldo's Secret' based on documents obtained from 'the whistleblower portal Football Leaks.' Las Vegas police reopened a rape investigation after Mayorga's lawsuit was filed, but Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson decided in 2019 not to pursue criminal charges. He said too much time had passed and evidence failed to show that Mayorga's accusation could be proven to a jury. Mayorga's lawsuit claimed conspiracy, defamation, breach of contract, coercion and fraud. By the time Dorsey threw out the case, Stovall claimed Mayorga would receive far more than $25 million (£19.9m) in damages. The 9th Circuit ruling noted the 2010 settlement 'lay dormant until 2017, when `Football Leaks' released hundreds of documents through a cyber hack of Ronaldo's former attorneys.' 'Despite the settlement and confidentiality agreement between Ronaldo and Mayorga, Stovall sought and used documents from 'Football Leaks' - including those clearly marked attorney-client privileged - to prosecute a new lawsuit on behalf of Mayorga against Ronaldo,' the circuit court said. Having weathered their fair share of storms, Ronaldo and Rodriguez are now looking ahead to what will likely be an extravagant wedding ceremony. But will it be another ten years in the making? Only time will tell.

Shamed Premier League ref David Coote slapped with ban and mandatory education for scathing Jurgen Klopp rant
DAVID COOTE has been slapped with a two-month ban by the FA for his rant about Jurgen Klopp. As well as his suspension, Coote must undergo a mandatory face-to-face education programme. 1 Coote was sacked by the Premier League in December 2024, after the PGMOL intially suspended him. He has now been further punished by the FA for an "aggravated breach" of rule E3.2 due to referencing Klopp's nationality in the video. Coote admitted the charge and the FA said the ex-ref expressed "deep remorse" and acknowledged his comments were "crass and inappropriate". Coote also said that his words did not reflect his true view of Klopp, who he had a "deep professional respect" He also apologised to the former Liverpool boss personally and to The FA, PGMOL and the wider football community. The clip, which was filmed around July 2020, was leaked online in November 2024. In the viral video, he referred to Liverpool as "s***" and extraordinarily dropped the C-bomb to describe ex-Reds boss Klopp. Coote said: "Liverpool were s*** . Klopp is an absolute c***. "Aside from having a right pop at me when I was refereeing them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying and then had a right f***ing pop of me. "I have no interest in speaking to someone who is f***ing arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner is all right, I get on with him. "You can see me there with a 'mask' on.
