Democratic US Senator Padilla forced to ground, handcuffed by security agents

Hindustan Times21 hours ago

WASHINGTON -Democratic U.S. Senator Alex Padilla was shoved out of a room, forced to the ground and handcuffed by security after attempting to ask a question at a Thursday press conference by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
"I am Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary," Padilla said during the press conference where Noem was discussing protests in Los Angeles over President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.
"Hands off," Padilla, 52, said before he was ushered out of the room.
Padilla, of California, said in a statement that he was forced to the ground and handcuffed by security.
A video posted online showed three agents pushing Padilla to the ground and handcuffing his hands behind his back. Reuters was not immediately able to confirm the authenticity of the video.
Noem was speaking in Los Angeles, which has seen days of protests against Trump's crackdown on migrants. The White House has responded by sending National Guard troops and U.S. Marines into the city, saying they would help secure federal buildings and defend Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
DHS in a statement on X accused Padilla of engaging in "disrespectful political theater".
"Mr. Padilla was told repeatedly to back away and did not comply with officers' repeated commands. @SecretService thought he was an attacker and officers acted appropriately," the department said, adding that Noem later met with Padilla.
A wave of Democratic senators, and at least one Republican, criticized Padilla's handling.
"Senator Padilla is a big, tall guy, and to see how he was handled out of that room is wrong and sick," Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski told reporters at the Capitol.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted the incident in a speech on the Senate floor.
"I just saw something that sickened my stomach the manhandling of a United States senator," Schumer said. "We need immediate answers to what the hell went on."
Top Senate Republican John Thune said he would withhold judgment until he knew more about the incident, saying, "We will have a response. But I want to get the facts and find out exactly what happened before we make any comments."
The incident was not the first time that Trump administration officials detained Democratic elected officials.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested and charged with trespassing on May 9 during a privately run immigration center. Prosecutors later dropped those charges but charged Democratic U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver with assaulting and resisting officers who were trying to arrest Baraka.
Both have denied wrongdoing.

Who is Senator Rand Paul's wife whom Donald Trump calls ' beautiful' amid 'petty clash' over budget?

Rand Paul said he only agrees with Donald Trump when the president calls his wife beautiful. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has been at odds with President Donald Trump on the spending bill as Paul sided with Elon Musk on this issue of calling the bill abominable. But his wife, political consultant Kelley Paul, appeared to be a peacemaker as Trump called him 'beautiful' and Rand Paul said this is the only thing about which he agrees with Donald Trump. Amid the ongoing clash, Rand Paul said his family got disinvited from the annual congressional picnic at the White House that was held yesterday. Paul called it very petty and said he had planned to bring his wife, son, daughter-in-law and 6-month-old grandson to the event. "I think I'm the first senator in the history of the United States to be uninvited to the White House picnic," the Kentucky senator told reporters. "Every Democrat will be invited, every Republican will be invited, but I will be the only one disallowed to come on the grounds of the White House." "I just find this incredibly petty," Paul said. "The level of immaturity is beyond words." "They've decided they want to declare war on my family and exclude us from the White House," he added, saying he was given no explanation. "We're just not welcome." Trump responded to the grievance and said the family 'of course' invited. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Of course Senator Rand Paul and his beautiful wife and family are invited to the BIG White House Party tonight. He's the toughest vote in the history of the U.S. Senate, but why wouldn't he be?" the president wrote. "Besides, it gives me more time to get his Vote on the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill." Later Thursday, Paul shared a photo of his grandson wearing a red Make America Great Again hat and said "Turns out my grandson is actually invited to the Congressional Picnic! He is ready!" Trump told reporters that Paul has always been a friend and the hardest vote in the history of US senate.

Amid Israel-Iran tensions, why is Strait of Hormuz important crude and oil buyers?

Israel-Iran strike news: The tension between Israel and Iran has caused worries for the oil market, especially over the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran has in the past threatened to close in retaliation for Western pressure. Israel launched widespread strikes against Iran on Friday, targeting its nuclear infrastructure, ballistic missiles and military commanders under what it called "Operation Rising Lion". Follow Israel-Iran strike live updates Iran has vowed a powerful and decisive response to the Israeli strikes, saying that its revenge 'will happen soon'. Following the Israeli strikes, the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said that oil refining and storage facilities had not been damaged and continued to function. While Iran has denied any such intentions, it has in the past threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to Western pressure. The strait is located between Iran and Oman and links the Gulf north of it with the Gulf of Oman to the south, and the Arabian Sea beyond. The strait is 33 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, with the shipping lane just three kilometres wide in either direction. According to Reuters, experts have said that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz could restrict trade and impact worldwide oil prices. Around one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Between the start and end of 2022, approximately 17.8 million to 20.8 million barrels of crude, condensate and fuels flowed through the strait every day, data from Vortexa showed. Members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq, export majority of their crude through the strait, especially to Asia. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have sought to find other routes to bypass the strait. The US Energy Information Administration said in June last year that around 2.6 million barrels per day of unused capacity from UAE and Saudi Arabia pipelines could be available to bypass Hormuz. In fact, Qatar, which is among the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporters, sends almost all of its LNG through the Strait of Hormuz. Over the years, Iran has threatened to block the Strait but has never gone through with the move. The commercial shipping in the area is protected by the Bahrain-based US Fifth Fleet. Back in 1973, Saudi Arabia-led Arab producers imposed an oil embargo on Israel's Western supporters during the latter's war with Egypt. At the time, Western countries were the top buyers of crude produced by Arab nations. However, in present times, Asia is the main buyer of OPEC-produced crude. The US has meanwhile more than doubled its oil liquids production over the last two decades, becoming one of the world's biggest oil exporters. During the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, the two sides sought to disturb each other's exports in what was known as the 'Tanker War'. Later, in July 1988, a US warship shot down an Iranian airliner and killed all 290 passengers onboard. This was termed as an accident by Washington, with Tehran saying that it was a deliberate attack, Reuters reported. Iran threatened to block the strait in January 2012 in retaliation for the US and European sanctions. In May 2019, four vessels, including two Saudi oil tankers, were attacked off the UAE coast, outside the Strait of Hormuz. The escalating tension in the Middle East triggered oil prices to jump by almost 7 per cent to multi-month highs. Brent crude futures were up $4.57 to $73.93 per barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate crude was up $4.53, touching its highest since January 21. Friday's gains on oil prices were the largest intraday moves for both contracts since 2022, after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
