Pitching coming around and what else Florida baseball learned from series win at No. 1 Texas

Florida baseball continued its late season push towards an NCAA Tournament berth by taking two of three games at No. 1 Texas over the weekend.
The Florida Gators (35-18, 13-14 SEC) opened the series with an 8-2 win on Friday, May 9. After losing 5-2 on Saturday, Florida responded with a 4-1 win over the Longhorns on Sunday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, Texas.

Florida won its fifth straight SEC series and is now 12-3 over its last 15 league games. Two of the five series wins have come against ranked opponents (No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Arkansas). UF delivered its first series victory against the nation's No. 1-ranked team since sweeping No. 1 Texas A&M from April 1-3, 2016.
Overall, Florida has won 15 of its last 19 games, making a remarkable turnaround from its 1-11 start in SEC play. The win also vaulted the Gators back into the USA Today Top 25 poll at No. 21
"We told ourselves we would turn this thing around," Florida baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. "Guys battled, ,never lost confidence. We all believed we would get back here. Great lesson to learn for all of us."
Here's a look at what UF learned from the series win:
Florida baseball pitching starting to come around
Freshman righty Aidan King (5-2) delivered a gem on Sunday, allowing no runs on two hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Of King's 110 pitches, 70 went for strikes.

King earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors for his performance, the league announced Monday, May 12.
"I don't remember a freshman pitching on the road like this and pitching as well as he did, and if it has happened, it hasn't happened in a long time," O'Sullivan said. "We talked about it before the game, what Aidan is able to bring to the table is his ability to throw the fastball on both sides of the plate. That was just a totally different look for them and their hitters to see today."
On Saturday, UF sophomore righty Liam Peterson pitched four scoreless innings before his start was cut short due to a rain delay. On Friday, Pierce Coppola (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings to protect an early 6-0 lead and earn the win for UF. Billy Barlow also gave UF a strong effort out of the bullpen following Coppola, allowing just a run over four innings. Overall, UF's five pitchers who appeared Friday night combined for 16 strikeouts compared to three walks.
"We've put ourselves in the position of being 1-11 (in the SEC) because we weren't throwing strikes," O'Sullivan said. "So, it's gratifying for all the coaches that we're starting to turn the corner on the pitching side of things, because offensively, we've been good, for the most part, the entire year."
Florida baseball defense can handle playing on a different surface
Playing on the astroturf at Disch-Falk Field, Florida committed just one error in three games. That defense helped support the pitching as UF surrendered just eight runs in three games and outscored the Longhorns 14-8 over the three-game series.
Florida baseball offense can come up with timely hits with RISP
With the wind shifting and often blowing in throughout the three-game series, Florida scored 14 runs in the series despite just homering once in the three games (a solo shot by Brody Donay on Sunday). On Friday night, UF scored six runs in the top of the first on a Ty Evans RBI double, Hayden Yost two-RBI single and Justin Nadeau two-RBI single. Catcher Luke Heyman also scored in the inning on a wild pitch.

On Sunday, other than the Donay homer, Florida scored on an RBI ground out by Ashton Wilson, RBI single by Blake Cyr and a two-out, RBI single from Heyman that put UF up 4-0 in the top of the seventh.
"They had a shift on him and he hit a ball back up the middle," O'Sullivan said. "That was a huge at bat and, you know, tacked on another run with two outs."

5-star Michigan football target sets commitment date

The post 5-star Michigan football target sets commitment date appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Michigan football team is hoping to land a commitment from one its top offensive targets, and it won't be long before we hear a decision. Five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell is down to eight schools, and he will announce his commitment on July 5th. Advertisement 'BREAKING: Elite 2026 WR Calvin Russell will announce his Commitment July 5th between these 8 Schools, he tells me for @On3Recruits,' Hayes Fawcett said in a post. 'The 6'5 195 WR from Opa Locka, FL is ranked as the No. 4 WR in the '26 Class (per On3 Industry).' Calvin Russell will choose between Michigan, Miami, Oregon, Florida State, Florida, LSU, North Carolina and Syracuse. Russell is a five-star recruit, according to 247Sports. He is the #21 player in the 2026 class, the #3 WR and the #2 player in the state of Florida. Russell currently attends Northwestern High School in Miami, FL. The Hurricanes will be a tough team for Michigan to beat here. 'Hulking wide receiver with above-the-rim athleticism that makes him a uniquely dangerous target, especially down in the red zone,' Russell's scouting report reads. 'Owns more of a slender build, but has measured over 6-foot-5 multiple times and is blessed with a near 6-foot-10 wingspan. Isn't exactly the most polished route runner at this stage, but creates separation with unexpected suddenness for such a longer strider. Superb body control tends to create even more of a disadvantage for defensive backs as he wins 50-50 battles with timing and positioning.' Advertisement If Michigan does land a commitment from Russell, there is a chance that he plays basketball for the Wolverines as well. 'Not going to outrun every tackle, but is quick to hit the gas and can make some dynamic cuts in traffic,' the scouting report continues. 'Spent much of freshman and sophomore seasons repping as a run first-quarterback out of necessity before settling in as a must-look option in Year 3 for a storied Miami Northwestern program that captured a 3A championship. Will need to add some body armour to a rather wiry frame in hopes of improving play strength and buy into the process at the school of his choice, but should be viewed as a potential impact pass catcher for a College Football Playoff contender that can be positioned all around the field in hopes of creating mismatches. One of those good-at-everything athletes that could legitimately play two spots in college as he's also being recruited by basketball high majors.' Calvin Russell is one of the best WRs in the 2026 class, and the Michigan football team needs WRs. This would be a massive get.

The Michigan football team extended an offer to a class of 2027 recruit on Wednesday, and this one is going to hit home for a lot of Wolverines fans. Because of the family history with the Michigan football program, it seems like the Wolverines probably have a good shot at eventually landing a commitment here. After Charles Woodson finished up his Michigan career, he was drafted fourth overall in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Woodson ended up playing in the NFL for 17 years, and he also spent a good amount of time playing with the Green Bay Packers. He had a sensational career. Woodson is now in the Hall of Fame. Charles Woodson is one of the most storied Michigan football players of all time. He accomplished a ton with the program during his college days, and then he went on to have a sensational professional career as well. He is one of the best players to ever wear the winged helmet. Now, Charles Woodson Jr. is nearing his college football career. He has a lot of work to do to become as good as his dad, but he seems to be on his way to a special career as well. Ohio State basketball reportedly set to announce home-and-home series with in-state rival

Ohio State basketball reportedly set to announce home-and-home series with in-state rival For years, the Ohio State basketball program has kept its in-state brethren within arm's length of playing during the regular season. Reasons aren't fully known, but many believe it's because the Buckeyes have nothing to gain by playing the likes of Cincinnati, Dayton, or Xavier -- three other programs in the state that could take away the mantle of being the so-called best hoops program in the Buckeye state. We've seen OSU play that trio before, but more often than not, it's been because it was forced to through special events or postseason tournament play. It seemed like a far-fetched idea that Ohio State would enter into any kind of agreement to play on another in-state basketball school as a part of a nonconference, regular-season game willingly. Until now. Though further details are still to materialize, NCAA basketball insider Jon Rothsten has announced that Ohio State and Dayton have agreed to a home-and-home series beginning this year, with the first game being at UD Arena in Dayton. There has not been an announcement by the Ohio State or Dayton athletic programs as of yet, but Rothsten is usually on point with these sorts of things, so expect something to be made official from the universities soon with a real, live date and time. Crazy enough, the Flyers and Buckeyes have only met twice, with the last meeting being a classic in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. That contest was won by the Flyers on a layup with under four seconds remaining to end OSU's postseason run. The win also evened up the all-time series at one victory each. OSU won the only other matchup 74-63 in an NIT quarterfinal in 2008. I'm all about this sort of scheduling and think it is long overdue. In fact, while we are on it, why don't we start a little Buckeye state annual event with all four of these programs doing battle? How fun could that be? We'll have more details as they are made available.
