Wizz Air profit slumps after grounding planes over engine issues

Wizz Air has revealed its annual profits slumped as the budget airline grappled with a fifth of its planes being grounded over issues with the engines. The Hungarian company said it was flying more passengers than ever despite the 'significant challenges' it faced. It reported an operating profit of 167.5 million euros (£141 million) for the year to the end of March, about a 62% drop from the 437.9 million euros (£368.7 million) generated the previous year. Nevertheless, revenues for the group edged up 3.8% and it carried a record 63.4 million passengers. The low-cost European airline was forced to ground an average of 44 planes over the year because of issues with the engines, which are made by US aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. This amounted to almost a fifth of the entire fleet. Wizz secured a two-year compensation package with Pratt & Whitney at the end of 2024 over the grounding of Airbus A320neo aircraft. It said the support was set to mitigate 'some, but not all, of the operational and financial impacts on the business'. Jozsef Varadi, Wizz Air's chief executive, said: 'Despite the unproductivity of a grounded fleet, we successfully delivered a second consecutive year of profitability. 'The number of grounded aircraft will start reducing in both absolute and relative terms and this is why we have reached a transformation point.' It had 37 planes on the ground last month, and is expecting roughly 34 to remain grounded by the end of September.

Starmer risks losing grip on Starlink rival to Macron

Britain risks losing its grip on a rival to Elon Musk's Starlink as part of French government rescue efforts to avert a debt crisis at the company. Eutelsat, which owns UK space business OneWeb, has been locked in talks with key shareholders including the French and British governments, as it seeks to raise funds to create a European alternative to Mr Musk's satellite business. Sources said Emmanuel Macron's government is considering dramatically increasing its stake in the business as part of a €1.5bn (£1.3bn) capital raise, taking its share of the company from around 13pc to 30pc. Indian billionaire Sunil Mittal, a BT investor and Eutelsat's largest shareholder, is also understood to be considering further investment, The Telegraph understands, alongside other French investment funds. However, any new cash injection threatens to seriously dilute Britain's stake in the company. Multiple sources said that, if the UK failed to join the funding round, it would cast doubt over its influence on key future business decisions. One industry source said the UK needed to decide if it is 'in the space game or not'. Eutelsat, which provides TV and broadband signals from space, faces a looming debt deadline in 2027 and has been attempting to secure new funds for months. It also needs to find billions of euros to build new satellites to compete with Starlink, which has launched close to 9,000 spacecraft. The new funding talks come almost five years after the British government, led by Boris Johnson, rescued UK business OneWeb from bankruptcy alongside Mr Mittal's Bharti Enterprises. Like Starlink, OneWeb provides internet signals from space using a network of 650 satellites. OneWeb was later sold to France's Eutelsat in a deal that left the British and French governments with major shareholdings in the combined company. Britain currently has an 11pc stake in Eutelsat, a board seat – controlled by Peter Kyle, the Technology Secretary – and a golden share in OneWeb that gives it a veto over key matters. The French government has, however, been looking at strengthening its position in Eutelsat. This month, Eutelsat, which is jointly listed in Paris and London, appointed a new chief executive, Frenchman Jean-Francois Fallacher, to lead the business, with the hire thought to be part of the French government plans. While OneWeb is the only other business with a network of hundreds of satellites that can currently compete with Starlink, the UK Government has been unwilling to inject further money into the business after providing a £400m bailout in 2020. Eutelsat's shares collapsed in the wake of the OneWeb takeover as investors baulked at the prospect of spending billions of euros to upgrade the satellite network to take on Mr Musk. Tim Farrar, an analyst at TMF Associates, said: 'Starlink has moved much more quickly than Eutelsat and OneWeb anticipated to dominate the market.' However, Eutelsat shares have rallied in recent months over reports that OneWeb's technology could be used in Ukraine as an alternative to Starlink, with the stock rising more than 50pc this year. Eutelsat is also looking for funding to help the European Union build a $10bn (£7.4bn) satellite network, known as Iris2. Brussels is seeking to develop alternatives to Starlink amid concerns about an over-reliance on an increasingly unpredictable US government and the mercurial Mr Musk. Eutelsat's latest discussions with shareholders comes after Nato nations recently pledged to boost defence spending under pressure from Donald Trump. Nato is expected to demand members increase their defence budgets to 3.5pc of GDP. The UK's Strategic Defence Review mentioned space more than 40 times and said the sector was a 'site of growing competition, and a domain that is central to warfighting'. It made no mention of the UK's shareholding in OneWeb. A government spokesman said: 'The UK government retains its special share in OneWeb and associated rights in full following the merger with Eutelsat in 2023.' Eutelsat and Bharti declined to comment. Release Date: June 04, 2025 For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. voestalpine AG (VLPNF) achieved solid results despite a challenging environment, particularly due to strong performance in railway systems and aviation sectors. The company maintained a stable, low-debt situation, focusing on free cash flow generation. The greentec steel project is progressing well, with one-third of the EUR1.5 billion investment already completed. The Steel Division showed strong performance, benefiting from stable demand in the automotive and energy sectors. The company is actively pursuing growth projects, including long-term contracts with truck manufacturers in North America and expansion in high-bay warehouse production. There was ailing demand in Automotive Components, mechanical engineering, and construction sectors, prompting reorganization projects. The European market, particularly Germany, was weak, impacting overall performance. The High Performance Metals Division faced low demand and underutilization of steel plants, especially in Europe and North America. The Metal Forming Division's Automotive Components business is still recovering from low domestic production levels in Europe. The company is facing uncertainties due to potential US tariffs, which could impact demand and production. Q: Could you share what happened with your sales to the US with the 25% tariffs in place? Have you been able to share the tariff cost with customers, or are you bearing the full cost? And regarding the 50% tariff, would the impact be greater because you could lose orders and production? A: Herbert Eibensteiner, CEO: Yes, the 25% tariffs led to a rise in steel prices, allowing us to pass some costs to customers through longer-term contracts. However, the 50% tariffs could lead to reduced orders from the US, as some products cannot be sourced locally, potentially impacting our production and demand. Q: Regarding European trade policy, you mentioned the potential extension of the free allocation path to 2034. Is this part of the Steel Action Plan, or is it something the European Commission is considering? A: Herbert Eibensteiner, CEO: We are lobbying for this extension as we invest in CO2 reduction. While some politicians are considering it, we are not sure of success. Other issues like safeguard measures and CBAM are also being discussed, but we may not get everything we want. Q: What is your base case scenario for the steel price cycle between now and the end of the year? A: Hubert Zajicek, Head of the Steel Division: We expect stable steel prices with no significant movement. Yearly contracts reflect current levels, and while there was an upturn earlier this year, prices have stabilized. We anticipate stable prices through the fiscal year with slight fluctuations. Q: Could you share the profit contribution from the railways business within the Metal Engineering Division? A: Gerald Mayer, CFO: The railway systems segment accounts for over 50% of the division's revenue and outperforms in terms of profitability and margin compared to the rest of the division. Q: On the CapEx side, how much of the EUR1.15 billion is for decarbonization, and where have you cut versus earlier guidance? A: Gerald Mayer, CFO: Approximately EUR350 million of the EUR1.15 billion CapEx is for decarbonization this year. We aim not to exceed this amount in future periods, with 25-30% of the total EUR1.5 billion decarbonization budget already spent.
