Kirkby Lonsdale man to attempt gruelling Guinness World Record
Greg Dunnings, a former soldier, will undertake the gruelling challenge on Saturday, August 30, at Carlisle Lake District Airport.
The 34-year-old will attempt to pull a van for the greatest distance in 24 hours, aiming to beat the current record of 32 miles.
He is raising funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, The Coldstream Guards charity and The Fire Fighters charity.

Mr Dunnings served in the Coldstream Guards for five and a half years before being medically discharged due to injuries sustained in an IED blast during Operation Herrick 11.
These injuries caused damage to his lower leg and left him with a knee held together with screws.
Since leaving the military, Mr Dunnings has been with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service for over seven years, currently serving at Preston Fire Station.
Mr Dunnings said: "My grandad served in the Grenadier Guards, and my older brother Zak was in 3 Para — so giving back to the Armed Forces community means everything to me.
"SSAFA was there for me when I needed help, and I want to make sure they can be there for the next person too."
Pulling a van continuously around a 1km loop is a childhood dream for Mr Dunnings.
He said: "I've always wanted a Guinness World Record.
"My grandparents bought me the book every Christmas.
"But I wanted to do something worthwhile — not just sit in a bath of beans.
"After ultra-marathons, carrying a rowing machine around the Yorkshire Dales' Three Peaks, and winning Gold at the Invictus Games, I've learned that I'm good at suffering — and this record is all about suffering."
Mr Dunnings has faced several training setbacks and persistent injuries recently but is determined to see the challenge through.
He said: "I ran the Manchester Marathon in April and have been training by dragging a massive tyre around my local rugby club.
"Training's not been ideal due to a few niggles, but I'm used to pushing through.
"This is about raising money for three brilliant charities — SSAFA, The Coldstream Guards Charity and The Fire Fighters Charity — and showing what's possible when you don't give up."
Mr Dunnings has already raised £1,000 for each charity but aims to raise even more through his extraordinary effort.
He encourages people to come and show their support throughout the challenge.

Indiana Pacers reward coach Rick Carlisle for NBA Finals run with mulityear contract extension
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Pacers rewarded coach Rick Carlisle with a multiyear contract extension Tuesday following the team's surprising run to the NBA Finals. Team officials made the announcement about one month before the Pacers open training camp. The Pacers provided no additional details about contract terms. 'Since his return to the Pacers in 2021, coach Carlisle has been integral to our success, which includes leading us to consecutive Eastern Conference finals appearances and our first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years,' president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard said in a statement. 'Beyond his coaching achievements that rank him among the best in NBA history, coach Carlisle continues to embrace our community and give back to the state of Indiana with his Drive and Dish program.' The 65-year-old Carlisle seems to be rejuvenated in his second stint with the Pacers. He first took the Indiana job in 2003-04. Four seasons later, he was fired. After taking a year off from coaching, the New York state native was hired by the Dallas Mavericks. Carlisle became the longest-tenured coach and winningest coach in franchise history, going 555-478 in 13 seasons while leading the Mavs to the NBA crown in 2010-11. In June 2021, he stepped down in Dallas and one week later was hired by the Pacers for one big reason. 'Herb Simon, the Simon family, Steven Rales, Kevin Pritchard and our players make Indiana such a special place. Let's go!' Carlisle said, referring to the team owners and management. The Pacers struggled in his first two seasons back in the organization, going 60-114 during yet another attempt by Indiana to rebuild around a group of young players. But as Carlisle adapted his coaching style to play at a faster, more aggressive pace, it paid dividends each of the past two seasons. Indiana reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in a decade in 2024 and last season made their first Finals appearance since 2000. They forced Oklahoma City to Game 7, but couldn't close out the series after two-time All-Star Tyrese Haliburton suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the first quarter of the final game. Haliburton is expected to miss all of next season as he recovers. In eight seasons with the Pacers, Carlisle has gone 338-318. He's recorded the most wins in the franchise's NBA history and starts this season needing seven wins to become the 11th NBA coach with 1,000 career wins. Only one active coach, Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers, has more victories than Carlisle, who led the Pacers past the Bucks in first-round playoff series each of the past two years. He grew up in New York, near the Canadian border, played college basketball at Virginia and was a teammate of Hall of Famer Larry Bird on the Boston Celtics 1986 title team. ___

Rick Carlisle contract: Pacers, coach reach extension after NBA Finals run
One of the architects of the Indiana Pacers' run to the NBA Finals will be around for the foreseeable future. The Pacers and head coach Rick Carlisle have agreed to a multi-year contract extension, a person with direct knowledge of the matter confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the agreement until it became public. Particulars of the contract extension were not available. Carlisle, 65, led the Pacers to a 50-32 record last season, which placed them fourth in the Eastern Conference. Indiana, which became known for its come-from-behind wins, ripped off a furious run to the NBA Finals, where the Pacers lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games. Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton suffered a torn Achilles tendon early in Game 7 of that series, forcing the Pacers to alter their approach to 2025-26. Still, Indiana made its first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years. (Carlisle was an assistant coach for that 2000 team under Larry Bird.) Carlisle is entering his fifth season as head coach of the franchise and is currently the oldest active head coach in the NBA. Carlisle has posted a 993-860 (.536) mark in his 23 seasons as an NBA head coach, with his teams clinching a postseason spot 16 times. He led the Mavericks to the NBA title in 2011, when Dallas topped the Miami Heat in six games. Among active coaches, Carlisle only trails Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers (1,162 wins) on the all-time wins. But Carlisle will have his hands full in 2025-26. The Pacers will be without Haliburton for the entire season, and former center Myles Turner, who had been the longest-tenured player with the team, signed with the rival Bucks. News of Carlisle's extension was first reported by NBA insider Marc Stein.
