Bursa Malaysia Ends Slightly Lower Tracking Regional Markets
By Rosemarie Khoo Mohd Sani
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia ended the week slightly lower, tracking the negative performance seen across regional markets, particularly among emerging markets, an analyst said.
At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was down 0.08 per cent, or 1.33 points, to 1,516.79 from Thursday's close of 1,518.12.
The benchmark index opened at 1,516.91, less 1.21 points, and moved between 1,513.39 and 1,518.71 throughout the trading session.
Market breadth was negative, as decliners outnumbered gainers 478 to 325. A total of 529 counters remained unchanged, with 1,014 untraded and 20 suspended.
Turnover dropped to 1.92 billion units worth RM1.66 billion compared with Thursday's 2.42 billion units valued at RM2.27 billion.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng told Bernama that key regional indices ended mixed as investors remained cautious, awaiting further signals on trade negotiations between the United States (US) and key regional players, especially China.
Besides, he said that the weak performance on Wall Street overnight hurt market sentiment globally.
Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the FBM KLCI posted a marginal decline, despite Thursday's notable technical rebound, which helped cushion broader losses.

MCMC Clarifies Mobile Phone Data Collection Amid Media Reports, Ensures Privacy
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has clarified its collection of mobile phone data (MPD) from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), assuring that no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is accessed, processed, or disclosed. The clarification comes amid recent media reports regarding the matter. In a statement today, MCMC said MPD was used strictly for the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key domains, namely the ICT Sector and the Tourism Sector. For the ICT Sector, MPD helps produce granular statistics, such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates at the state, district, mukim, parliamentary constituency, state legislative assembly (DUN), and local authority levels. For the Tourism Sector, it generates indicators such as the number of visitors and domestic tourism trips. 'The MPD data requested from MNOs is anonymised and contains no PII. 'In addition, MNOs are given the option to either process the MPD data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to MCMC, or, for MNOs without in-house processing capabilities, to submit the anonymised data to MCMC for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' it said. MCMC further clarified that the use of MPD as a new source of national statistics was a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes. Implementation of MPD is through collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science, it added. Over the past two years, MCMC said extensive engagement with all MNOs had been carried out to ensure mutual understanding of the data requirements, processes, and privacy safeguards.

Bursa slaps 5 directors of real estate company with RM350,000 fine
Bursa Malaysia Securities said it views the breach seriously, as an immediate announcement was crucial to shareholders and investors in that it related to Meridian Bhd's level of operations to warrant continued trading or listing on the Official List. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd has fined five directors of real estate services company Meridian Bhd a total of RM350,000 for failure to immediately announce that the company had an insignificant business or operations. Bursa said Meridian had been publicly reprimanded for breach of the Main Market Listing Requirements following the announcement of the unaudited quarterly report for the financial period ended June 30, 2023 (Q4 2023) on Aug 29 that year. 'Meridian had an insignificant business or operations based on Q4 2023, where the company's revenue of RM2.738 million on a consolidated basis represented 0.93% of the company's share capital of RM294.021 million as at June 30. 'Meridian only made the first announcement on Sept 26 after a delay of 28 days,' it said in a statement. Bursa named the five directors as former CEO Yap Ting Hau, who resigned on Dec 29, 2023, Tang Boon Koon, Chew Shin Yong, Ng Kok Hok and Kunamony S Kandiah. Yap and Tang were fined RM100,000 each, while Chew, Ng and Kunamony were fined RM50,000 each. 'Bursa Malaysia Securities views the breach seriously, as the first announcement was crucial to shareholders and investors in that it related to Meridian's level of operations to warrant continued trading or listing on the Official List,' said the bourse. It said there will be possible suspension and delisting if Meridian fails to regularise its level of operations within the timeframes prescribed by the listing requirements. 'Timely disclosure is important towards facilitating informed investment decisions,' it said.
