Gardaí in Laois have seized €40,000 worth of drugs after stopping a speeding car on the M7 driven by an unaccompanied learner driver.
Laois Roads Policing Unit stopped the vehicle yesterday evening, Wednesday, June, 11, and following a vehicle search discovered both Cocaine and Cannabis.

Garda suspended after death of man in Dublin
A garda who interacted with a man who sustained serious injuries in an incident in Dublin city centre and subsequently died earlier this week has been suspended from duty. It comes as the circumstances of the man's death are being investigated by the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Fiosrú. The 51-year-old man sustained severe head injuries in an incident near the Holiday Inn on O'Connell Street in Dublin city centre at around 4.15am last Friday, August 15. The incident took place after the man interacted with on-duty gardaí. The man died in hospital on Tuesday. The incident was referred by An Garda Síochána to Fiosrú, and one of Fiosrú's on-call team of investigators attended the scene last Friday. On Thursday, August 21, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that a garda who had interacted with the deceased last Friday was suspended while Fiosrú's investigation into the matter takes place. The spokesperson told the Irish Examiner: "A member of An Garda Síochána based in the Dublin Region has been suspended from duty in connection with an ongoing investigation being carried out by the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Fiosrú". While the exact nature of the man's interaction with gardaí is not clear, Fiosrú is obliged by law to investigate all instances involving gardaí which result in death or serious injuries, and the referral of the incident to Fiosrú and the garda's suspension does not mean that the garda in question has been accused of any offence. In a statement, Fiosrú said it was "vital" to the investigation that any persons who witnessed this serious incident come forward. "Fiosrú would like to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of the Holiday Inn, O'Connell Street, Dublin 1, D01 T2X2 at approximately 4.15am on Friday, 15 August 2025, or any passing vehicles, including taxis that may have dashcam footage from that location and /or on a mobile device," it said. "Anyone with information which may be of assistance to this independent investigation is asked to contact Fiosrú at 0818 600 800 or info@fiosrú.ie." It also said it had commenced "a criminal investigation into the incident" pursuant to section 208(1)(b) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024, and that it has been "liaising with the Dublin City Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist in relation to a post mortem" on the deceased.

According to Los Angeles Magazine, investigators fear Wedding could kill witnesses while he remains on the loose. 'Prosecutors told a federal judge how Wedding is tied to some of the world's most dangerous co-conspirators, including Hezbollah, ex-KGB agents, Hells Angeles and vicious killers tied to Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who was found guilty in the US on charges related to his own murderous network,' Los Angles Magazine reports. The government was asking the judge for a protective order in the case to protect its witnesses, warning that anyone caught up in "Operation Giant Slalom" who agrees to cut a deal could be in danger. English tourist victim of ‘one-strike' attack in Temple Bar undergoes emergency surgery
The victim, who is aged in his 40s, was allegedly kicked in the head. An English tourist has been hospitalised with serious head injuries after being attacked in the Temple Bar area of Dublin City centre overnight. The victim, who is aged in his 40s, was allegedly kicked in the head during the assault in the early hours of this morning. No arrests have yet been made as part of the investigation, but detectives are reviewing good quality CCTV footage from the area in an effort to identify the suspect. The tourist was rushed to hospital and it is understood he has since been transferred to Beaumont Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery overnight. At this stage gardaí believe a verbal altercation with another male, who was not known to the man, escalated into the physical assault. The man had been socialising in the area prior to the attack. Detectives at Pearse Street gardaí station are carrying out the investigation. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan appealed for members of the public to assist the gardaí. 'I have been briefed on a serious incident that occurred overnight in Dublin,' Mr O'Callaghan said. 'While a garda investigation is under way, I will not comment further but I want to wish the injured man a full recovery and appeal for any witnesses to come forward to assist An Garda Síochána,' he said.
