‘Cynical': Tasmanian parliament vote of no confidence examined amid stadium concerns

Sky News AU12-06-2025
Tasmania Business and Transport Minister Eric Abetz examines the Tasmanian vote of no confidence controversy concerning the proposed Tasmanian stadium.
'We are committed to the stadium, there's no doubt about that,' Mr Abetz told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
'Let's be clear, back in 2019, the organically grown Tasmanian task force for an AFL team recommended a stadium in the CBD at the current location with a roof.
'The Labor Party, they were against it, now they're for it.
'People are every cynical … this was destruction, negativity writ large.'

Snug fit: Beau signs again as 'dream' county recruit

Australia's burgeoning Test allrounder Beau Webster has been hailed as a "dream overseas recruit" as English county side Warwickshire announced they've snapped up the Tasmanian gun to enjoy a second season at Edgbaston. Webster has signed a deal to play for the Birmingham-based county from the beginning of next season until the last week of July 2026 after the club was left hugely impressed by his allround contribution this year. The man from Snug enjoyed a three-month spell in the Midlands, never looking back after top-scoring for Warwickshire with 85 on debut as his side earned a five-wicket victory against Yorkshire at Headingley. His spell helped him seal selection for Australia's World Test Championship final quest against South Africa at Lord's in June, when he also top-scored with 72 in the first innings. After playing a further three Tests for Australia in the Caribbean, scoring two half-centuries and taking five wickets, the 31-year-old returned to Edgbaston last month, scoring a half-century and an unbeaten hundred as well as taking four wickets in Warwickshire's victory over local rivals Worcestershire. In all, he amassed 361 runs at an average of 45.12 and took 16 wickets at 26.56 in the red-ball Championship, though the club will be hoping he plays some limited-overs games too next season. "Beau has been a dream overseas recruit," Warwickshire first-team coach Ian Westwood told the club website. "He is a triple-threat player of top international calibre, and we cannot wait to welcome him back next April. It's great news for the club and us as a team." Webster himself added: "I have loved my time with the Bears in 2025. "My teammates, coaching and support staff and Edgbaston facilities are absolute top tier, and it did not take me long to agree to return in 2026." Israel ‘intends to' take over Gaza, Netanyahu says as security cabinet meets

London: Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel intended to take military control of Gaza in a new offensive to defeat Hamas and create a secure zone around the narrow territory, shunning global calls for a ceasefire amid mounting casualties from the war. The Israeli prime minister outlined the plan as the nation's security cabinet meets to discuss a plan to intensify military operations to wipe out Hamas, a listed terrorist group, and transfer control of the Gaza Strip. Asked whether Israel would take control of all of Gaza, Netanyahu said: 'We intend to.' He said the goal would be to hand over government to Arab states, but he set no timeframe for this ambition or the military operations. 'We intend to in order to assure our security remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza and to pass it to civilian governance that is not Hamas and not anyone advocating the destruction of Israel,' he told Sky News. 'That's what we want to do. We want to liberate ourselves and liberate the people of Gaza from the awful terror of Hamas.' The security cabinet would still need to approve such a decision. Loading The policy would defy international calls for a ceasefire when US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration at the starvation of civilians, while nations including France and the United Kingdom have signalled plans to recognise a Palestinian state. Netanyahu made no comment on a two-state solution with Palestine – named by many countries including Australia as the preferred resolution to the conflict – but set out a sharply different future in which Gaza was managed by Arab states.
