New platform's opening gives Bradford more trains
A new £24m platform at Bradford's Forster Square Station has opened - boosting rail services in the city.
The investment means operator LNER will run seven services each way between Bradford and London King's Cross on weekdays and six on Sundays, an increase from the current two services.
Bradford Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said it would provide much-needed extra capacity during the City of Culture year.
The milestone is being marked with an event which will include performances from the Bantam of the Opera choir, which is made up of Bradford City fans.
A specially-liveried LNER Azuma train, one of the new Bradford services, will also be unveiled ahead of it leaving the platform at 11.17 BST.
Bradford's poor rail links have long been seen as a factor holding the city back from reaching its full potential.
When rail minister Huw Merriman announced the government-funded scheme earlier this year, he said it would futureproof the station for generations to come while reducing delays and improving access into the city for passengers, commuters and tourists.
Ahead of the opening, volunteers and railway staff spent time last week cleaning and picking up litter from the station, car park and surrounding area
Parts of the station, which is operated by Northern, have also been repainted and upgraded.
In the 1890s, the station had six platforms and a large canopy roof. There was a major rebuild in 1993, when the Victorian station was demolished and a new terminus built with three platforms.

A SOCIAL media star from America says he is already planning his next trip to Bradford after visiting the city for the first time. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - is most known for making food and travel videos across the UK. The 26-year-old, who lives in Tennessee, fell in love with Yorkshire after tracing his ancestry back to different parts of the UK. His travels take him all over the country, having recently explored Blackpool, Nottingham, and Sheffield. Kalani and his wife Savannah took up the offer and stopped by Bradford city centre for a day trip. He is now hoping to return and explore other places in the district. 'It was a place people told me not to go to, I guess - the comment was obviously satire,' Kalani told the T&A. 'I wanted to go because I heard it's the best place to get a curry. Up until that point I just knew Bradford was the place for a curry. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - met up with Yorkshire's own Danny Malin from Rate My Takeaway (Image: UGC) 'Yorkshire has really cool history and architecture. Bradford really surprised me how much architecture is still there in the city centre. That combined with the people up North are just really nice and a lot of good food. 'Whitby is one of my favourite places. 'You can definitely tell there's a lot of diverse culture in Bradford - there's so many different groups of folks there. You can see why it won the City of Culture. Not in a bad way either, there's not many spots you can go into like that. London feels like that, there's so many different people melding in one spot. I thought that was really cool.' The couple decided to ask RateMyTakeaway's Danny Malin for his recommendations. 'Danny's a good friend of mine,' said Kalani. 'I asked him, being a Yorkshire lad, where he recommended in Bradford. He said the Sweet Centre for a curry. 'I will say it's different than ones I've had around the UK. The Sweet Centre ones are more authentic to Kashmir, they don't have all of the gravy sauce that I call them British curries now would have. I had lamb on the bone and spinach and chicken. You can really taste the protein and spice better that way. I enjoyed it. At the Sweet Centre (Image: UGC) 'I still like dunking my Naan in some chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, but it was really nice to get an authentic taste of what the curry was supposed to be like - or what it evolved from. 'In terms of authenticity, that's probably the most authentic curry I've had in the UK. It was very tasty.' He added: 'A few of my fans actually came up to me while I was streaming, people from Bradford that were super grateful I showed up. They were excited because they said not many people travel to Bradford.' Speaking about what he's learned on his explorations around the UK, he said: 'I've learned especially here if someone's telling me not to go somewhere, odds are they've never even stepped foot in the place. It's just a lot of predisposed opinions. 'Me and my wife both made a comment that it was absolutely beautiful, especially by City Hall and other spots. It kind of reminded us of some other cities we really enjoy. That wasn't something I was expecting, especially with the comments that people leave about Bradford, it was a nice surprise. Glastonbury festival-goers issued warning by health bosses over ‘highly infectious' disease
Festivalgoers heading to Glastonbury later this month are urged to check their vaccination status, as health officials warn of a spike in cases of measles across the country. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says the virus is 'circulating across the country', with case numbers especially high in the South West, where the iconic music festival will take place between 25 - 30 June. More than 100 cases were recorded in April, followed by 86 in May, with unvaccinated children under 10 among the most affected. The warning comes amid fears that large-scale events, including Glastonbury and other summer festivals, could accelerate the transmission of the virus. Measles is highly infectious and can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, brain inflammation and, in some cases, death. Dr Alasdair Wood, a consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA South West, told ITV News: 'We want festival-goers to enjoy their time at Glastonbury and other festivals this year. 'Being aware of the current health risks will help those attending enjoy their time, as much as possible. 'Measles is circulating across the country, and festivals are the perfect place for measles to spread. 'If you're not fully vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella, please contact your GP to see if you can get an appointment before coming to the festival. Key symptoms to watch out for Measles typically begins with cold-like symptoms — including a high temperature, runny nose and cough — followed by a rash that usually starts on the face before spreading across the body. Some may also develop small white spots inside the mouth. You're considered infectious from around four days before the rash appears, until four days after. Health experts are stressing the importance of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, which offers lifelong protection after two doses. In the UK, children are offered the first dose at 12 months and the second at around three years and four months. A UKHSA campaign is also aimed at families heading abroad for summer holidays, where exposure to outbreaks elsewhere in Europe could increase the risk of bringing the virus home. While most people recover fully, health professionals advise seeking immediate medical help if symptoms become severe. These include difficulty breathing, seizures, confusion, dehydration, chest pain, or a rash that does not fade when pressed.

Yellow warning for thunderstorms in Scotland extended as alert lifted for England
A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Scotland has been extended, as a similar alert for England was lifted. Parts of the UK were battered by thunderstorms on Saturday as the rainy weather caused flooding and travel disruption in parts of England. More than 30,000 lightning strikes were recorded overnight, although most happened at sea. The wet weather came after the UK recorded its hottest day with West Suffolk reaching 29.4C. The Met Office said further outbreaks of heavy rain and thundery weather will affect parts of Scotland overnight, while elsewhere in the UK would become drier with some clear spells. The forecaster said Sunday would being better weather with variable amounts of clouds and sunny spells developing across the country, with a few isolated showers in the afternoon.
