The Union government on Thursday (August 14, 2025) announced gallantry awards for armed forces personnel, including those who played a key role in the success of Operation Sindoor. President Droupadi Murmu approved 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards for personnel of the armed forces and the Central Armed Police Forces on the eve of Independence Day, according to the Union Ministry of Defence. The President also approved Tatrakshak Medals to five Indian Coast Guard personnel. The awards include four Kirti Chakras; 15 Vir Chakras; 16 Shaurya Chakras; two Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry); 58 Sena Medals (Gallantry); six Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry); 26 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry); seven Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medals; nine Uttam Yudh Seva Medals; and 24 Yudh Seva Medals. Sub-Inspector Mohd Imteyaj and Constable Deepak Chingakham of the Border Security Force (BSF) were posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra in recognition of their exceptional courage and selfless leadership in the face of an adverse situation, the BSF said. The government has awarded 58 Sena Medals to the Indian Army, including to two Agniveers. Six Nao Sena medals have been awarded to Indian Navy personnel, and 26 Vayu Sena medals to Indian Air Force personnel. The medals have been awarded for brave contribution in the service of the nation during Operation Sindoor, and other operations conducted by the armed forces. The list of awardees includes pilots, officers, and jawans operating the S-400 air defence system. The Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal has been awarded to Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Director General of Military Operations for Operation Sindoor; Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh (Retd.), Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command; Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, Vice Chief of the Air Staff; Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Air Command; Air Marshal Jeetandra Mishra, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Air Command; and Air Marshal A.K. Bharti, Director General, Air Operations. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) received 23 Gallantry Medals, the highest among Central Armed Police Forces, including three Shaurya Chakras and 20 Gallantry Medals for valour in Jammu & Kashmir, and in anti-Maoist operations. On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, during which a series of missile strikes targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam. The operation targeted nine locations, including terror camps in Muridke, a Lashkar-e-Taiba stronghold, and Bahawalpur, the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters. The President also approved 290 Mention-in-Despatches for 115 personnel of the Indian Army, five personnel of the Indian Navy, 167 personnel of the Indian Air Force, and three personnel of the Border Roads Development Board. During Operation Sindoor, India's air defence systems shot down six Pakistani aircraft, while air-to-ground missiles struck airbases and other defence installations in the neighbouring country, causing significant damage, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh recently said.

15 Vir Chakras awarded for Op Sindoor, 9 go to IAF pilots who struck Pakistani terror camps

The award recipients from the IAF include Group Captains R.S. Sidhu, Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra; Wing Commander Joy Chandra; Squadron Leaders Sarthak Kumar, Siddhant Singh, and Rizwan Malik; and Flight Lieutenant A.S. Thakur. Their decisive actions under intense pressure were instrumental to the success of the operation. The Vir Chakra went to nine IAF officers, fighter pilots included, who led the Indian strike packages from 7-10 May and executed precision strikes on terrorist headquarters in Muridke and Bahawalpur and critical Pakistani military assets. New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has approved the Vir Chakra, India's third-highest wartime gallantry award, for nine Indian Air Force officers, four Indian Army personnel, and two posthumous Border Security Force personnel for their exceptional role in Operation Sindoor. Four Indian Army officers, including two officers from the Artillery Regiment, Colonel Koshank Lamba and Lieutenant Colonel Sushil Bisht, along with Naib Subedar Satish Kumar from the 4 Dogra, and rifleman Sunil Kumar from Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, have also been awarded the Vir Chakra for their role during Operation Sindoor. Besides, two BSF personnel, Sub Inspector Mohd Imteyaj and Constable Deepak Chingakham, stationed at BOP (Border Outpost) Kharkola along the Jammu International Border, were posthumously conferred the Vir Chakra for their extraordinary bravery during Operation Sindoor. During Operation Sindoor, SI Imteyaj and Constable Chingakham fought off heavy shelling and drone attacks and refused to abandon their post despite fatal injuries. Several other officers who played a key role in the air defence network during the operation received other honours. IAF officer Wing Commander Abhimanyu Singh received the Shaurya Chakra, and 26 officers and airmen were awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) for their extraordinary bravery. For the first time, two Agniveers were awarded the Sena Medal for their role in Operation Sindoor, among other actions. Another Agniveer also received a Mention in Despatches. India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of 7 May, targeting nine terror training camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)—associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The strikes came in retaliation for the 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam carried out by terrorists trained and backed by Pakistan, claiming 26 lives. After Pakistan deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure and Indian airbases, the armed forces launched a swift and calibrated retaliatory operation, striking key technical installations, command and control centres, radar systems, and weapons depots. On Saturday, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh confirmed that the IAF's S-400 Triumf air defence system downed five Pakistani fighter jets and one AEW&C/ELINT aircraft at a distance of nearly 300 kilometres during the operation, achieving the longest surface-to-air kill in history. Incidentally, following the attack on the airbases, Pakistan, which had turned down the 7 May request of Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt. Gen. Rajiv Ghai 'with an intimation that a severe response was inevitable and, in the offing', reached out to him on 10 May to propose cessation of hostilities. Army Holds 400-km Cycle Rally To Honour Wayanad Landslide Victims

The Indian Army's Defence Security Corps (DSC) Centre in Kannur organised a 400-kilometer cycle rally through four northern districts of Kerala. The rally was a show of support for victims of devastating landslides in Wayanad's Chooralmala in July last year, which left 254 people dead, 397 injured, and 118 missing. Additionally, the initiative aimed to reconnect with local communities, engage with veterans, and encourage young people to join the armed forces. Led by Colonel P. S. Nagra, the cycle rally began on August 9 in Kannur, and the journey spanned key towns across four northern districts, following this route: August 9: Kannur to Vadakara August 10: Vadakara to Calicut August 11: Calicut to Malappuram August 12: Malappuram to Wandoor, then Wandoor to Mukkam August 13: Mukkam to Kalpetta August 14: Kalpetta to Chooralmala and back The final leg of the rally was flagged off on Thursday by Wayanad District Collector Megha Sree, IPS officer Taposh Basumatry, Assistant Collector of Wayanad, Archana, and other senior veterans. The event paid tribute to the people of Wayanad, symbolising unity, resilience, and national integration. "This rally is not just about cycling, it's about being present for the people, showing them they are not alone in the aftermath of tragedy, and motivating the youth to see the Indian Army as a way to serve and protect," said Col Nagra. The rally will conclude on August 15, coinciding with India's 79th Independence Day celebrations. Participants will be honored for their dedication and service at the Kalpetta Parade Ground.
