Trump attributes Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire to his efforts: Netizens are having none of that

Focus Malaysia30-07-2025
TRUMP has done it again. The president of peace recently grabbed the headlines for claiming his role as a mediator of peace in the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. On Truth Social, Trump said he had spoken with Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
'I am pleased to announce that, after the involvement of President Donald J Trump, both countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE,' he said. While he was busy typing all these on Truth Social, we are being served a manifold of headlines, most of which spoke of Palestinians being starved to death.
Meanwhile, what about our PMX and his role in this effort? Netizens were flabbergasted by Trump's claim and rightly so. 'Anwar was on the phone day and night trying to settle their argument and this guy was busy to claim it,' said netizen @ilpiaduih on a Malaysiakini post carrying the news.
However, @johnnymagoo198 pointed out that Anwar had no leverage to broker any deals unlike Trump.
An incredulous netizen by the name of @mohdfaris1998 even asked X AI, Grok, to clarify the situation, and this was Grok's reply:
But we have to say, the picture comments were as hilarious as they were sarcastic.
To re-cap, Anwar Ibrahim was reportedly said by Al Jazeera that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an 'immediate and unconditional' ceasefire.
Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met on Monday for ceasefire talks at Anwar's official residence in Malaysia's administrative capital, Putrajaya.
And no, the meeting wasn't held in the White House. The Malay Mail further reported Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying the US applauds the ceasefire declaration between Cambodia and Thailand.
'We are grateful to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and for hosting the ceasefire talks,' he said in a statement released by the State Department late on Monday. Meanwhile, the President of Peace will do a lot of good reining in Israel from committing further genocides in Gaza.—July 30, 2025

Putin and Trump will meet in coming days, Kremlin aide says

FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin are seen during the G20 leaders summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina November 30, 2018. REUTERS/Marcos Brindicci/File Photo MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet in the coming days, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said on Thursday, in what would be the first summit between leaders of the two countries since 2021. "At the suggestion of the American side, an agreement was essentially reached to hold a bilateral meeting at the highest level in the coming days, that is, a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump," Ushakov said. "We are now beginning concrete preparations together with our American colleagues," Interfax news agency quoted him as saying. He did not say where the summit would take place. Putin was due later on Thursday to meet the president of the United Arab Emirates, which sources have previously suggested as a possible venue. Russia's stock market index rose 4.5% after the announcement of the meeting. There has been no summit of U.S. and Russian leaders since Putin and Joe Biden met in Geneva in June 2021. Russia went to war in Ukraine in February 2022, plunging relations into deep crisis. Trump has moved to mend relations with Russia and try to end the war, although in his public comments he has veered between admiration and sharp condemnation of Putin. Ushakov said Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, at a meeting with Putin on Wednesday, had raised the possibility of a three-way meeting of Trump, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. But he said the Russian side had left this proposal "completely without comment". "We propose, first of all, to focus on preparing for a bilateral meeting with Trump and we believe that the main thing is for this meeting to be successful and productive," Ushakov said. Malaysia to continue mediating Thailand-Cambodia border conflict

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will persist as a mediator in resolving the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed. Both nations have requested Malaysia's coordination to uphold ceasefire terms, Anwar stated during the Budget 2026 Engagement Session. Minor issues remain but are expected to be resolved soon, he added. Earlier, Anwar met Cambodia's Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand's Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit. The ASEAN Defence Attaché Observer Team will monitor the border without full ASEAN intervention, Anwar clarified. China and the US are not involved in monitoring but may provide logistical aid if needed, he noted. The conflict has displaced 300,000 civilians, now relocated to safer zones, Anwar emphasised. Defence ministers are finalising details to sustain the ceasefire and reactivate border committees. Malaysia's Chief of Defence Forces swiftly negotiated with counterparts after the July 28 ceasefire, Anwar acknowledged. Daily discussions with Cambodian and Thai leaders ensure progress, he concluded. - Bernama

Modi stands firm on India agriculture amid US tariff dispute

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared India would not yield on agricultural protections following new US tariffs. The US announced 50% levies on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's Russian oil purchases as a factor. Trade tensions centre on Washington's push for access to India's agricultural and dairy markets. Modi emphasised safeguarding farmers and dairy workers, calling them non-negotiable priorities. 'I know I will have to pay a personal price for this, but I am ready for it,' Modi stated in New Delhi. India also maintains bans on genetically modified imports due to domestic concerns. Dairy imports face resistance over cultural and religious sentiments tied to cows in Hindu-majority India. The dispute contrasts with earlier optimism over US-India trade relations under Trump. Trump previously praised Modi as a 'tougher negotiator' during a Washington visit. The US views India as a strategic counterbalance to China in South Asia. Modi may visit China in late August, his first since 2018, according to unconfirmed reports. – AFP
