‘Whole life ahead of her': UC Berkeley senior paralyzed following fall

A UC Berkeley senior has spent weeks recovering in an Oakland hospital after a devastating fall left her paralyzed from the waist down, her father said.
Bandna Bhatti, 22, is close to a week away from graduating, but instead of attending the ceremony, her father said, she will hopefully be thousands of miles away, at a spinal cord specialty hospital in Chicago.
'She has her whole life ahead of her,' Baljinder Bhatti, Bandna's father, said. 'As a parent, whatever it takes, I want to make sure she walks again.'
Bandna fell at least 12 feet from outdoor metal stairs at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house on Piedmont Avenue on April 19, KTVU reported, before landing in a narrow passageway. Students were celebrating Cal Day, when newly admitted students visited the campus, and Bandna was found about 15 minutes after the fall, the TV station reported.
Bandna's family told KTVU that she was brought into the fraternity house before being moved to a friend's apartment, where 911 was called about seven hours later.
Bandna's injuries were significant: a brain bleed, a dural tear with spinal fluid leakage, a fractured scapula and broken bones, according to a GoFundMe page from her sister.
Baljinder said that while Bandna is recovering, one of the most concerning injuries is that her T12 vertebrae in her spine was shattered, contributing to her partial paralysis.
Baljinder said that Bandna turned 22 while in the hospital on Saturday, an occasion that brought family and friends to her room.
'A lot of students came and brought flowers and tried to make her happy,' Baljinder said. 'We're doing our best…'
Bandna's father said that she has been concerned about her ability to recover from the accident and was moved to tears the following day when her friends ran a half marathon to fundraise for her care.
Her friends asked donors to pledge $5 per mile to cover 'vital funds for Bandna's recovery,' according to a GoFundMe organized by Bandna's sister Sonya. Nearly $113,000 was raised on the site as of Thursday.
'She was crying that she's not there. She was crying. It was really hard,' Baljinder said. 'That's the first time I've ever seen her crying that bad.'
Her friends have been 'very helpful' in setting up events and checking on Bandna, Baljinder said.
Sonya wrote that Bandna's injuries 'are not only life-altering but will require extensive and ongoing medical care, including physical therapy, rehabilitation and specialized support to help her navigate this new chapter.' The donations will be used for specialized care, adaptive equipment and home modifications 'to help Bandna regain as much independence as possible,' Sonya wrote.
Bandna is an active athlete, Baljinder said, playing tennis and softball through high school. He said she's always been an excellent student, graduating at the top of her class from Ceres High School with various awards. Bandna is scheduled to graduate with a degree in data science, Sonya wrote on the donation page.
'She's a very good kid,' Baljinder said. 'There's very few people like this.'
Baljinder said that Bandna has always been kind and polite, and even while in pain in the hospital has taken care to address nurses and doctors politely.
'Bandna is a brilliant, compassionate, and resilient young woman who has worked tirelessly toward her dreams,' Sonya wrote.
UC Berkeley said they were aware of the incident, and could not confirm confidential student matters.
'Our thoughts are with the student, their family, loved ones and friends during this time,' university spokesperson Adam Ratliff said in a statement. 'We are following our protocols to offer support to the student and their family.'
The university said the Berkeley Police Department was the agency in charge of investigating the fall. Police confirmed they responded to a 911 call in the evening of April 19 about a fall and found a 'young female that presented with altered mental status.'
Baljinder is hopeful that within a week, Bandna could be stable enough to be transported to Chicago to get help from a spinal cord specialist in hopes that she could walk again.
For now, Bandna's father is continuing to commute back-and-forth between the hospital and his job as a construction worker in Ceres, just outside of Modesto. While Bandna's mother is staying with her, Baljinder said he has had to continue working.
'It's 24/7. This is the one thing in mind. Sleeping, waking up, anything, eating — it's her,' Baljinder said. 'Very, very painful.'
Sonya wrote on the donation page that 'our world was turned upside down' and thanked everyone for their support.

Grandma allegedly drugged grandkids and locked them in cages so she could go out: ‘Meemaw makes us stay in the dog cage'

An Oklahoma grandmother allegedly drugged her grandkids and locked them in a dog cage for hours when she wanted to go out alone, according to a year-long investigation of abuse accusations. Davena Marx, 53, is accused of feeding the two children — whom she had full custody of — anti-psychotic drugs, whipping them with a belt, grinding her heels into their feet, and forcing them to exercise until they collapsed, according to local reports. She was charged with various counts of child abuse and child neglect against her 8-year-old granddaughter and 6-year-old grandson, Local 12 reported. 3 Davena Marx, 53, is charged with child abuse for locking her two grandchildren in a dog cage among other accusations. GoFundMe 'Memaw sells drugs and uses them,' one of the children told investigators after they were rescued from the alleged house of horrors in the city of Warr Acres. 'She makes us stay in the dog cage when she wants to go outside by herself.' The young boy told investigators that Marx, whom he called 'Memaw' gave him Seroquel, a sleep-inducing drug used to treat schizophrenia that's only supposed to be taken by kids older than 13. Police said that traces of the drug were found in both Marx's grandson and granddaughter. A social worker from the Department of Human Services conducted a welfare check last year after receiving a tip about abuse, according to local reports. The granddaughter texted a social worker, 'she is mean to us, she is very abusive,' according to OKCFOX. The kids were immediately removed from the home. Officers transported the children to a Safe Clinic, where they were examined and interviewed about the alleged abuse, according to Law & Crime. 3 Davena Marx, known to her grandchildren as 'memaw,' is charged with child abuse in Oklahoma. Oklahoma County Detention Center Doctors said the granddaughter had bruising on her back that was consistent with being beaten with a belt, according to the outlet. The grandchildren said that Marx physically and emotionally abused them, including forcing them to do calisthenic exercises until their limbs gave out, the publication reported. A neighbor approached authorities after the children were rescued and told them that he had seen the siblings digging around in garbage dumpsters searching for food, according to reports. 3 Davena Marx, 53. kept her grandchildren in a dog cage and forced them to take antipsychotic medication, according to prosecutors. News 9 Warr Acres Assistant Police Chief Jason Allen said Marx's arrest came in May, after extensive interviews with her grandchildren. 'The day we went out with them, there was enough to immediately remove the children, which is often not the case,' Allen said. Officials obtained a search warrant for the apartment and found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a bottle of Alprazolam and a bottle of Seroquel, which were both prescribed to Marx, according to reports. 'They did find a large dog cage in the residence,' Allen said. 'They also did locate Seroquel, which was also one of the allegations that Seroquel had been given to the children as well.' Marx took custody of her grandchildren in 2022 after their father was gunned down in a road rage incident, according to a GoFundMe post.

Lowe's worker allegedly shoots co-worker dead on forklift — confesses to murder in HR email

An unhinged Lowe's employee shot and killed his coworker as he operated a forklift during an overnight shift at the hardware store — then bizarrely fessed up to the murder in an email to human resources. Christopher Wasnetsky, 36, allegedly unloaded multiple shots at 44-year-old Jeff Moeller while he was working at a Lowe's in Scranton, Pa., around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Scranton Times-Tribune. Officers found Moeller — a father of three — was struck twice in the head and once in the back and was in critical condition, the outlet added. 4 Christopher Wasentsky was arrested for killing his coworker during an overnight shift at a Pennsylvania Lowe's. Scranton Police Department The responding officers immediately rushed Moeller to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Police quickly identified Wasnetsky as the alleged shooter and arrested him at the front entrance of the hardware store. Wasnetsky told police that he was the one to call in the shooting 911 and brazenly told the operator that he was the 'person that did it,' the outlet reported. The suspect also said he sent an email to Lowe's management and human resources before committing the shooting, stating what he was going to do and that it could have been avoided if someone had stepped in to address his claims earlier. Wasnetsky claimed to investigators that Moeller had been harassing him at work and management had done nothing to resolve the ongoing issues despite his filings. 4 The victim was identified as Jeffrey Moeller. GoFundMe Wasnetsky told police he had been prepping to carry out the shooting by doing target practice in his backyard with a Springfield 9 mm handgun. He admitted that he shot Moeller, who was on the forklift, in the chest from about five feet away. Moeller then fell out of the machine and pleaded with the suspect for help as he struggled on the ground. 4 Wasnetsky claimed to investigators that Moeller had been harassing him at work and management had done nothing to resolve the ongoing issues despite his filings. Christopher Sadowski Wasnetsky told investigators he then shot Moeller twice in the head to end his suffering. He also said he planned to kill himself as well, but backed out, the outlet reported. Wasnetsky was charged with first and third-degree murder and is currently being held on no bail at the Lackawanna County Prison. He is scheduled to appear in front of a judge for his preliminary hearing on June 30th. Moeller is remembered as a hardworking husband and father of three daughters, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help the family with funeral costs. 4 Moeller is remembered as a hardworking husband and father of three daughters. GoFundMe 'If you knew Jeffrey, you knew he had the softest heart & the loudest laugh,' the fundraising page reads. 'He & Keisha had recently reconnected with their faith, and he was planning to be baptized this Father's Day, alongside his daughters. He was so proud to be their dad, everything he did was for his family.' One of his Lowe's coworkers, Kassie Sierra, told the Scranton Times-Tribune that the father of three was a 'kind man and great friend.' '(He) worked hard for his wife and daughters, and he always had a smile,' Sierra said.

California fugitive captured three decades after escaping FCI Dublin

A fugitive who fled a California prison over three decades ago was arrested by the U.S. Marshals earlier this month, authorities announced, about 150 miles away from where he escaped. Ronald Keith Harvey, 79, was captured in Nevada City, California, by the U.S. Federal Marshal Fugitive Apprehension Team on June 12, according to a Facebook post by the Nevada County Sheriff's Office and county booking records. Harvey escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, on Jan. 21, 1994, according to KTVU. "There are some people who are better than others at absconding justice and just going on the run," Deputy U.S. Marshal Cruz Moya told KGO-TV. Moya, who has been in charge of Harvey's case since 2024, told SF Gate that the federal marshals found Harvey following a data sweep that led to an address associated with the escapee in Nevada City. USA TODAY reached out to the U.S. Marshals Service for a statement on June 17 and did not receive an immediate response. Escapee had been serving time for marijuana operation Moya told KTVU that Harvey was serving a 60-month sentence at FCI Dublin for manufacturing marijuana plants. "He wasn't cultivating a small amount. He was arrested with 600-plus plants and firearms. So, it was a pretty big operation that he was running," Moya said to KGO. Marshals told KGO-TV that Harvey has about four years left on his original sentence. FCI Dublin was the prison where Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin served their sentences related to the "Varsity Blues" college admissions scandal. FCI Dublin closed in 2024 following an Associated Press report on alleged sexual abuse at the prison.
