Ex-serviceman who shot son dead, injured wife often used to threaten to kill them: FIR
The 55-year-old ex-serviceman, Baljinder Singh, who allegedly shot dead his son and left his wife injured at their residence in Buani village of Ludhiana district late Tuesday night, would often threaten the mother-son duo to kill them after getting drunk. A police complaint was also registered against him in this connection earlier, his brother-in-law (wife's brother), Takwinder Singh, told Khanna police. An 'inebriated' Baljinder allegedly opened fire from his 32-bore licensed pistol at his wife, Balwinder Kaur, 52, and son Jagmeet Singh, 26, following a heated argument. Jagmeet suffered three bullet injuries in his chest and stomach and died on the spot, while Balwinder is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ludhiana and is stated to be stable, police said. Khanna police booked Baljinder Singh for murder under section 103 of the BNS and section 27 of the Arms Act at the Doraha police station on the statement of Balwinder's brother, Takwinder Singh of Jassar village. Takwinder stated in his complaint that Balwinder married Baljinder over 30 years ago, and the couple had two sons, another being Manpreet, 28. 'They never had a pleasant relationship, as Baljinder mostly used to stay out during his service in the Army. However, after his retirement 7-8 years ago, he started a private school bus business,' the complainant said. 'While staying with his family after retirement, he would get drunk daily and fight with his wife and younger son, threatening to kill them with his pistol. In 2024, a police complaint was filed, and Doraha police initiated preventive action against him. But he started abusing his wife and son again,' the complainant alleged. Takwinder alleged that Tuesday night, his sister told him over the phone that Baljinder was again misbehaving with them. 'I visited them immediately and found Baljinder furious and misbehaving with everyone. I tried to pacify him, and when I was about to leave their house, Baljinder again took out his weapon and said that he would finish his wife and son. He opened fire, targeting them before my eyes. Jagmeet suffered bullet injuries in his chest and stomach, while Balwinder got bullets in her back. They were rushed to a hospital in Ludhiana while Baljinder fled the scene. Jagmeet died,' the complainant stated. Doraha police station SHO Inspector Akash Dutt said, 'Earlier too, action was taken against Baljinder and he was detained on his wife's complaint as he used to threaten and abuse them after getting drunk. The accused is absconding and is yet to be arrested. His son's autopsy will be conducted on Thursday, and his wife is stable now.'

Ludhiana: Police reveal family feud led to ex-armyman killing his son
A day after the chilling incident in the Buani village of Doraha, where a retired army man shot his son dead and injured his wife with his licensee revolver, police investigations have revealed that the firing was triggered by a family dispute over a borrowed car. The accused, Baljinder Singh, 55, allegedly opened fire on his 26-year-old son Jagmeet Singh and wife Balwinder Kaur following a heated argument on Tuesday night. According to investigation, the fatal confrontation began when Baljinder asked Jagmeet to return a car that he had borrowed from a friend. When the son refused, Baljinder vandalised the borrowed vehicle in anger. In retaliation, Jagmeet reportedly damaged his father's car. Enraged, Baljinder took out his licensed 32-bore revolver and fired at his son and wife. Jagmeet died on the spot after receiving three gunshot wounds to his chest and stomach, while Balwinder Kaur sustained bullet injuries in her back. She remains hospitalised in Ludhiana and is reported to be in stable condition. The FIR was filed on the complaint of Takwinder Singh, Balwinder Kaur's brother, who was present at the time of the incident. Takwinder stated that this was not the first time Baljinder had threatened his family. 'He had a history of domestic violence, especially after retirement. He used to get drunk daily and fight with my sister and nephew. We even filed a complaint last year, and preventive action was taken, but it didn't stop him,' he added. 'On Tuesday, my sister called me because Baljinder was creating trouble again. When I reached, he was already aggressive. Before I could leave, he pulled out his revolver and shot them in front of me.' Police say the motive behind the shooting appears to be a combination of long-standing domestic discord, alcohol abuse, and a sudden burst of rage over a seemingly minor dispute. Inspector Akash Dutt, SHO at Doraha police station, confirmed that Baljinder had previously been warned for similar behaviour and was once detained following a complaint by his wife. The Doraha police have registered an FIR under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 27 of the Arms Act against Baljinder Singh, who is currently absconding. 'The accused is on the run and our teams are working to arrest him at the earliest. The autopsy of the deceased son will be conducted on Thursday,' said the SHO.

‘Whole life ahead of her': UC Berkeley senior paralyzed following fall
A UC Berkeley senior has spent weeks recovering in an Oakland hospital after a devastating fall left her paralyzed from the waist down, her father said. Bandna Bhatti, 22, is close to a week away from graduating, but instead of attending the ceremony, her father said, she will hopefully be thousands of miles away, at a spinal cord specialty hospital in Chicago. 'She has her whole life ahead of her,' Baljinder Bhatti, Bandna's father, said. 'As a parent, whatever it takes, I want to make sure she walks again.' Bandna fell at least 12 feet from outdoor metal stairs at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house on Piedmont Avenue on April 19, KTVU reported, before landing in a narrow passageway. Students were celebrating Cal Day, when newly admitted students visited the campus, and Bandna was found about 15 minutes after the fall, the TV station reported. Bandna's family told KTVU that she was brought into the fraternity house before being moved to a friend's apartment, where 911 was called about seven hours later. Bandna's injuries were significant: a brain bleed, a dural tear with spinal fluid leakage, a fractured scapula and broken bones, according to a GoFundMe page from her sister. Baljinder said that while Bandna is recovering, one of the most concerning injuries is that her T12 vertebrae in her spine was shattered, contributing to her partial paralysis. Baljinder said that Bandna turned 22 while in the hospital on Saturday, an occasion that brought family and friends to her room. 'A lot of students came and brought flowers and tried to make her happy,' Baljinder said. 'We're doing our best…' Bandna's father said that she has been concerned about her ability to recover from the accident and was moved to tears the following day when her friends ran a half marathon to fundraise for her care. Her friends asked donors to pledge $5 per mile to cover 'vital funds for Bandna's recovery,' according to a GoFundMe organized by Bandna's sister Sonya. Nearly $113,000 was raised on the site as of Thursday. 'She was crying that she's not there. She was crying. It was really hard,' Baljinder said. 'That's the first time I've ever seen her crying that bad.' Her friends have been 'very helpful' in setting up events and checking on Bandna, Baljinder said. Sonya wrote that Bandna's injuries 'are not only life-altering but will require extensive and ongoing medical care, including physical therapy, rehabilitation and specialized support to help her navigate this new chapter.' The donations will be used for specialized care, adaptive equipment and home modifications 'to help Bandna regain as much independence as possible,' Sonya wrote. Bandna is an active athlete, Baljinder said, playing tennis and softball through high school. He said she's always been an excellent student, graduating at the top of her class from Ceres High School with various awards. Bandna is scheduled to graduate with a degree in data science, Sonya wrote on the donation page. 'She's a very good kid,' Baljinder said. 'There's very few people like this.' Baljinder said that Bandna has always been kind and polite, and even while in pain in the hospital has taken care to address nurses and doctors politely. 'Bandna is a brilliant, compassionate, and resilient young woman who has worked tirelessly toward her dreams,' Sonya wrote. UC Berkeley said they were aware of the incident, and could not confirm confidential student matters. 'Our thoughts are with the student, their family, loved ones and friends during this time,' university spokesperson Adam Ratliff said in a statement. 'We are following our protocols to offer support to the student and their family.' The university said the Berkeley Police Department was the agency in charge of investigating the fall. Police confirmed they responded to a 911 call in the evening of April 19 about a fall and found a 'young female that presented with altered mental status.' Baljinder is hopeful that within a week, Bandna could be stable enough to be transported to Chicago to get help from a spinal cord specialist in hopes that she could walk again. For now, Bandna's father is continuing to commute back-and-forth between the hospital and his job as a construction worker in Ceres, just outside of Modesto. While Bandna's mother is staying with her, Baljinder said he has had to continue working. 'It's 24/7. This is the one thing in mind. Sleeping, waking up, anything, eating — it's her,' Baljinder said. 'Very, very painful.' Sonya wrote on the donation page that 'our world was turned upside down' and thanked everyone for their support.
