Oman's strategic vision drives diversification and global investment appeal
MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman is making confident strides toward a comprehensive economic transformation, guided by Oman Vision 2040—its national roadmap to diversify the economy, attract foreign investments, enhance governance, and promote sustainability. A recent Oxford Business Group (OBG) report highlights the tangible progress being made across key sectors, positioning Oman as a rising regional and global economic force.
Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, emphasized that Oman's investment strategy is built on modernizing the business environment, developing human capital, fostering innovation, and accelerating digital transformation. These pillars are the foundation of 'Renaissance 2.0,' Oman's bold economic transformation plan targeting emerging sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, mining, tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and renewable energy.
Al Yousef also underscored Oman's strategic geographic advantage—serving as a trade gateway between Asia and Africa—supported by modern infrastructure, including efficient ports, highways, and industrial zones. According to World Bank reports, Oman leads the GCC in terms of fast-tracking import-export procedures, reducing shipping times by up to 40 per cent compared to regional peers.

Innovation is driving this transformation. Oman is advancing major initiatives such as green hydrogen production in Duqm, precision agriculture in Najd, AI-powered logistics, and smart tourism platforms—all hallmarks of its shift toward a diversified, knowledge-based economy.
Ibtisam bint Ahmed al Farooji, Under-Secretary for Investment Promotion, noted that Oman is increasingly attractive to foreign investors. Ranked fourth globally for foreign direct investment (FDI) appeal in 2023, Oman's FDI inflows grew by 19.3 per cent between Q1 2023 and Q1 2024. Key investment partners include China—with RO 1.4 billion invested in 2023—alongside India, Japan, South Korea, and Denmark, which is partnering with Oman on the $6 billion Amnah Green Hydrogen project.
Oman's economic diversification is further bolstered by the Oman Industrial Strategy 2040, which aims to double the manufacturing sector's contribution to RO 10.8 billion and attract annual investments exceeding RO 1.9 billion. The industrial sector alone recorded GDP of RO 3.8 billion in 2023, while FDI in this sector surpassed RO 2.2 billion in early 2024.

The logistics and transport sector is a major growth driver. Key projects—like the Oman-Etihad Rail, Khazaen Economic City, and air/sea connectivity expansions—leveraged Oman's strategic location to boost GDP contributions to RO 1.7 billion in the first nine months of 2024. By 2040, this is expected to rise to RO 13.8 billion, creating around 300,000 jobs. Reforms such as a new maritime law and the adoption of smart systems like the Port Community System have dramatically cut shipment processing times.
Meanwhile, Oman is advancing toward food security. By 2040, the goal is full self-sufficiency, with strong performance already in fish (162%), fresh milk (97%), and eggs (92%). The agriculture and fisheries sectors now employ over 139,000 people and are tapping into 1.4 million hectares of land using smart technologies and integrated approaches.
The mining sector is also gaining momentum, with GDP reaching RO 229.3 million in 2023 and mineral exports rising by 71 per cent. Oman is developing high-value projects such as a titanium dioxide plant and an aluminum wheel factory, while opening 110 new mining blocks. The sector benefits from robust legislation and infrastructure, encouraging both local and foreign investment.
Tourism, another pillar of diversification, recorded a 12 per cent increase in visitors in Q1 2024 compared to 2023. Oman aims to welcome 11 million annual visitors by 2040 through expanded visa access, strategic partnerships (e.g., with Saudi Arabia), and investment in ecotourism, culinary experiences, and heritage development—including plans to open 25 heritage sites for investment by 2025.
Urban development complements tourism growth. Oman's real estate and city planning strategies include 18 initiatives tied to 16 priorities and 32 indicators. These aim to build sustainable, digitally integrated urban spaces that cater to rising populations and modern lifestyles.
While oil remains a vital part of the economy—contributing RO 7.2 billion to GDP in Q2 2024—Oman is investing heavily in renewable energy. Through Hydrom, the country targets green hydrogen production of 1 million tons by 2030, scaling up to 8.5 million tons by 2050. This output is equivalent to 80% of Oman's current LNG exports.
Finally, digital transformation is a cornerstone of Oman's future. With significant progress in 5G, cloud computing, and data infrastructure, Oman is positioning itself as a regional tech hub. These advancements support the digital economy's growing contribution to GDP and align with Vision 2040's broader goal of sustainable, innovation-led growth. — ONA

Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman expressed its full support for the decision made by the International Labour Conference to upgrade Palestine's membership from a national liberation movement to a "non-member observer state" within the organization. This step is based on legal and institutional considerations consistent with the principles of international justice, equitable representation, and fair participation in multilateral organizations. Khalid Salim Al Ghamari, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour for Labour Affairs, delivered a speech at the conference, affirming that the State of Palestine has consistently engaged in active and responsible participation in the organization's work. He emphasized that Palestine has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to international labour standards and has cooperated constructively with the ILO's various mechanisms. Despite the exceptional challenges it faces, granting Palestine "observer member" status will enhance its ability to convey the realities of Palestinian workers and defend their rights through official and institutional channels, Al-Ghamari noted. He stated that this decision is a technical measure that strengthens the ILO's efficiency and inclusivity, reflecting its commitment to enabling all relevant parties to contribute to achieving decent work goals and promoting fundamental labour rights, in line with the spirit of international conventions and the organization's founding principles. He added that voting in favour of the resolution reaffirms the importance of multilateralism, inclusive engagement, and ensuring representation for all peoples in international organizations. It also reinforces the ILO's role as a platform for dialogue and understanding, upholding its foundational principles away from political tensions or narrow interests. During its 113th session today, the International Labour Conference, at the high-level ministerial meeting in Geneva, adopted the resolution with 386 votes in favour, 15 against, and 42 abstentions. The 113th session of the International Labour Conference began last Monday and concluded today, with the participation of tripartite delegations representing over 187 ILO member states, including governments, employers, and workers.

Pact to advance urban air mobility in Oman
MUSCAT, JUNE 6 AeroVecto, an Oman-based startup specialising in sustainable air mobility solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with Romanian-based LYNEports, a digital planning platform for advanced air mobility infrastructure, to support the rollout of hybrid electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aviation services in Oman and the wider GCC region. The partnership is set to take advanced air mobility services, currently in its nascency in Oman, to the next level. A number of Omani startups, in partnership with key players in the global international, are gearing up to introduce uncrewed air mobility services for, among other fields, cargo deliveries, passenger transportation, ambulance services, medical deliveries and even disaster relief. AeroVecto is credited with developing Shuttle, a hybrid eVTOL aircraft purposely built for mass public transportation. According to the company, the high-capacity aircraft will enhance current ground-based public transport by enabling convenient point-to-point travel. With a focus on passenger volume and comfort, Shuttle aims to revolutionise urban and intercity mobility, introducing a new era of clean, efficient and scalable air transport. Through the partnership, LYNEports will assist in planning and simulating AeroVecto's Shuttle network, ensuring each site meets aviation-grade safety standards, operational viability and regulatory requirements. Furthermore, by leveraging LYNEports' AI-driven platform, AeroVecto can evaluate ideal locations, model flight routes and visualise integrated transport systems, accelerating the adoption of advanced air mobility across Oman. 'At AeroVecto, our vision is to make high-capacity aerial commuting a practical reality for cities across the region. Last July, Oman's national passenger transportation company Mwasalat announced a partnership with US VTOL aircraft manufacturer Odys Aviation to support the development of Aerial Logistics Programmes in the GCC based on the latter's hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft, Laila. Additionally, with the goal of supporting workforce development linked to this emerging sector, a leading college in Muscat has announced a partnership with aircraft maker Boeing to launch the an Air Taxis and Advanced Air Mobility programme designed to provide undergraduate aviation students with opportunities for research, curriculum enrichment and participation in business challenges related to urban air mobility. Together with regulatory support from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and other stakeholder agencies, these developments underscore Oman's ambitions to become a regional leader in advanced air mobility. Oman hopes for direct World Cup spot dashed as Jordan win 3-0 in Muscat
MUSCAT- A dominating Jordan outplayed hosts Oman 3-0 in their penultimate AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26 Group B tie at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Thursday. The defeat ended Rasheed Jaber-coached Red Warriors' hopes of a direct spot from the group as the top two would seal the berth. With just one game remaining, Oman, now at 10 points, can manage only three more points, which would not be enough to even keep the third spot as they are now fourth. South Korea lead the standings and have qualified with 17 points while Jordan after the win are second at 16. Iraq are third with 13 and the match between Jordan and Iraq in Amman on 10 June will decide the second team from the group to seal the spot. Oman take on Palestine in their final game of the round on 10 June with Palestine at fifth spot with seven points. Kuwait are at bottom with six points. Jordan will remain in pole position against Iraq as they only have to avoid defeat to advance. Jordan's win against Oman was marked by Ali Olwan's hat-trick. At the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, both sides tested each other in the first 10 minutes, and Oman captain and keeper Faiz Al Rusheidi had his first shot of adrenaline when Mousa Al Ta'mari put the ball past him in the 11th minute only for the Ligue 1 midfielder to be ruled offside. The hosts' slow and steady build-up was hampered by poor finishing, with Abdul Al Mushaifri and Harib Al Saadi both fluffing their shots in the 15th and 19th minutes respectively. Issam Al Sabhi then had a golden opportunity to put Oman ahead, but his close range shot in the 24th minute was resolutely palmed away by keeper Yazeed Abulaila. A brilliant through ball from Al Saadi from his own half in the 31st minute found Al Sabhi, who controlled the pass with his first touch but then stumbled under pressure in the box. Jordan, who only had two shots at goal in regulation, were awarded a penalty five minutes into time added on after a VAR review found Mohannad Taha had been brought down, with Olwan duly converting to give his side the advantage going into the break. It got even better for Jordan six minutes into the second half as a quick break saw Olwan getting his second when he side-footed home Yazan Al Naimat's pass from the left beyond the reach of a diving Al Rusheidi. Olwan completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute when he gleefully put the ball into an empty net after Al Rusheidi was caught off-position on the right by Al Ta'mari's pass. Oman made five substitutions but it proved a little too late and the West Asians will have to give it their all in their final match against Palestine on Tuesday.
