Anwar Stresses ASEAN Unity Amid Geopolitical Pressures and Tariff Concerns
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to ASEAN unity and constructive regional engagement amid rising geopolitical tensions and external economic pressures.
In an interview with Al Jazeera's 101 East , Anwar said the region must present a united front in response to growing trade uncertainties and cross-border challenges, especially as Malaysia prepares to chair ASEAN in 2025.
'We have been quite cohesive. I think we need to strengthen that bond together in this changing geopolitical environment,' he said, stressing that ASEAN's focus should remain on intra-trade, investment, and shared positions on major power relations.
Anwar also warned that shifting tariff policies, particularly from the United States, could have adverse effects on Malaysia and the wider region. However, he expressed optimism that stronger ASEAN cohesion could help mitigate the impact.
He reaffirmed ASEAN centrality as a guiding principle amid changing global trade dynamics.
Addressing the issue of cyber scams in Southeast Asia, Anwar said ASEAN cooperation on cybersecurity and transnational crime has improved, adding that member states are working towards establishing common rules. He dismissed allegations that Cambodia was complicit in scam operations, citing Malaysia's strong cooperation with Cambodian authorities.
Anwar also said he would raise any emerging concerns directly with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Malaysia has previously chaired ASEAN in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. Related

Anwar: Govt may set up TVET commission
MELAKA: The government is mulling the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students. "I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs. "With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Finance Ministry, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions." Anwar said this when opening the National TVET Day 2025 celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, here today.

Australia, Japan combine to boost Cambodian cashew industry
Cambodian farmers sorting cashew nuts. -Australian embassy PHNOM PENH: Australia and Japan are collaborating to strengthen Cambodia's cashew industry by helping improve processing capabilities and the quality and flavour of the kingdom's nuts. In 2024, only about five per cent of the kingdom's harvested cashews were processed domestically, with the vast majority exported before value was added. According to June 10 post by the Australian embassy in Cambodia, Australia and Japan are working together to strengthen Cambodia's cashew sector through complementary support that can increase processing capacity and see more delicious, high quality Cambodian cashews reach global markets. It reiterated that only about five per cent of the 840,000 tonnes of cashews grown in Cambodia last year was processed in country. 'If more of this yield can be processed in Cambodia, the country can capture more value and generate more jobs and wealth,' it noted. The embassy added that, with support from both governments, Kampong Thom-based cashew processing company MIRARTH Agri Tech is 'helping to advance in-country processing, showcase Cambodia's cashews to global markets, and ensure smallholder farmers who grow these cashews benefit from more stable, fair prices'. Japanese support has helped the company improve supply chains and undertake feasibility studies for cashew processing and minimising waste. Australian backing, meanwhile, has helped MIRARTH enhance its export readiness, including through coaching, business matchmaking and participation in the 2025 World Cashew Conference – resulting in preliminary agreements with several companies. According to the embassy, MIRARTH plans to process 3,000 tonnes of cashew in 2025 and work towards a zero-waste approach. 'This collaborative approach between Australia and Japan reflects our shared commitment to advance high-potential sectors in Cambodia – improving productivity, employment and livelihoods whilst driving sustainable economic growth,' it said. The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) previously reported that as of March 2025, Cambodia had 52 cashew processing enterprises, including 6 medium-sized factories (with production capacity between 7,000 and 140,000 tonnes annually). The remaining 46 enterprises are small, family-run businesses without year-round production. According to the association, Cambodia produced 850,000 tonnes of raw cashew nuts in 2024, with 815,000 tonnes exported — mostly to Vietnam — an increase of 21 per cent compared to 2023. The total export value was approximately $1.15 billion, up 26.1 per cent. Cambodia is currently home to about 700,000 hectares of cashew plantations, of which 580,117 hectares are harvest-ready, with the rest being newly planted areas. Cashews are grown in almost every province, but predominantly in Kampong Thom, Kratie, Ratanakiri, Stung Treng, Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum, Preah Vihear, Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, Kampong Chhnang and Mondulkiri, according to the CAC. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

M'sia secures RM90bil approved investments in 1Q

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has secured RM89.8bil in approved investments for the first quarter of financial year 2025 (1Q25), a steady 3.7% year-on-year increase despite a challenging global economic backdrop. In a statement yesterday, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) said these investments, spread across 1,556 projects in manufacturing, services, and primary sectors, are set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. 'The results reflect continued investor confidence in the country's clear policies and long-term fundamentals, bucking the trend of cautious international capital flows due to geopolitical and macroeconomic volatility, and the intensifying global competition for fresh investments. 'Foreign investments dominated the investment landscape, contributing RM60.4bil or 67.3% of total investments, while domestic investments accounted for RM29.4bil or 32.7%,' it said. Besides job creation, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz said the increase in the Managerial, Technical, and Supervisory index to 46.3% from 44.2% in the same quarter last year reflects the country's success in creating higher-skilled, better-paying jobs. 'With a better integrated Asean economy, which we are working hard on as Asean chair, we are also paving the way for Malaysia's continued positioning as a manufacturing and services hub to this fast-growing 680-million strong region,' he said. He said the investment environment in 2025 is expected to remain challenging due to continued geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds from the US-China trade war. 'Nonetheless, although major markets' protectionist policies and supply chain frictions continue to weigh in on companies' investment decisions, Malaysia's clear policies should be able to attract more investments from Asia's growing economy, which is expected to expand to about 42% of global gross domestic product by 2040,' he said. Besides bringing in good jobs and business opportunities, Mida chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the projects secured by Mida for 1Q25 supported the national effort to build a more diversified and resilient economy.
