In two separate cases, Gujarat Police begins probe after suspicion raised over cause of death – days after last rites

Indian Express3 days ago
Two simultaneous but separate investigations into the suspicious deaths of young people, an 18-year-old woman in Banaskantha and a 24-year-old man in Ahmedabad, are currently underway in Gujarat. In both cases, people close to the deceased have raised suspicion about the cause of death – several days after the last rites of the deceased were carried out.
While no breakthrough has been made yet in the Banaskantha case, in which the live-in partner of Chandrika Chaudhary (18) had accused her kin of killing her, in the case of 24-year-old Allarakha Abdulrashid Abdal in Ahmedabad, one person has been arrested.
In Chandrika's case, the fact that the body has been cremated, and that there is no video evidence of the crime, has made the task all the more challenging for the police.
However, in the Ahmedabad case, the CCTV footage of the deceased being involved in a brawl with a man proved to be a clincher for officers of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) in Ahmedabad who are investigating the case.
An Accidental Death (AD) report was filed at Danilimda police station after Abdal was found lying unconscious on a street on June 15. He was later pronounced dead.
'Initially, the family buried the body without a post-mortem examination. However, the deceased's father later raised suspicions, prompting a deeper investigation,' according to a statement from the Crime Branch.
During inquiry, it was found that Abdal had been involved in a fight with one Mohammad Shahrukh alias Kesar the same day, right before the time of the death.
'The breakthrough came from reviewing CCTV footage from the police's Smart City Nirbhaya cameras near the incident site. The footage clearly showed the two men in a brawl,' said the Crime Branch.
Confronted with this evidence, Kesar allegedly admitted to the fight. Based on the CCTV footage and the suspect's admission, authorities have concluded that the case involves suspected assault immediately before death. Legal action is now being pursued in the issue by Danilimda police station.
In the Banaskantha case, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Danta division, Suman Nala is carrying out the probe.
On Friday, she spoke to the immediate family members of the deceased.
In his complaint, the deceased woman's partner Haresh had stated that the duo had signed a 'formal agreement of live-in relationship' in Ahmedabad before leaving Gujarat. However, police along with the woman's kin traced the couple to Rajasthan. While Chandrika was handed over to her uncle, Haresh was arrested in an old Prohibition Act case.
After coming out of jail, Haresh filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking that the woman be produced before the court. On June 25, just two days before the matter was set for hearing, Haresh learnt that Chandrika had died on the same day.

Lawyer who masterminded woman's self-abduction arrested

Rajkot: The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Monday arrested a lawyer, the alleged mastermind behind the fake kidnapping of a 44-year-old woman and her six-year-old niece, who were eventually traced to Madhya Pradesh. The woman, Reema Makhani, orchestrated her own kidnapping, an idea suggested by the accused lawyer, Rajveersinh Zala, due to a dispute with her brother Riyaz over a share in the ancestral property. Investigators told TOI that the property is valued between Rs 8 crore and Rs 9 crore. Reema and Riyaz's six-year-old daughter, Anayaa, were reported missing on July 24. After a seven-day search, the duo were traced to Dhar district of MP. Reema was arrested by the Pradyuman Nagar police on the complaint lodged by Riyaz, and she confessed to orchestrating the abduction on the advice of Zala. She alleged that Riyaz denied her a share in the ancestral property, leading to repeated disputes between the siblings. In collaboration with Zala, she planned the staged kidnapping a month ago to extort money from Riyaz. Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Bharat Basiya said Zala was located at Geeta Hospital in Ujjain district. Aware that his arrest was imminent, Zala consumed poison to avoid police action and was admitted for treatment. Upon being discharged from the hospital on Sunday, he was taken into custody by the crime branch.

Delhi Crime Branch Cracks Cold Case: Wife, Lover Held For Husband's Murder, Dumping Body In Sonipat

The Delhi Crime Branch has solved a year-old blind murder case with the arrest of a woman and her boyfriend for conspiring to kill her husband and disposing of his body in Haryana's Sonipat, officials said on Sunday. The accused have been identified as Soniya (34), a resident of Delhi's Alipur, and her partner Rohit, a resident of Jaji village in Sonipat. According to Crime Branch officials, the case dates back to July 2024, when the decomposed body of an unidentified man was found in a drain near Agwanpur village under Gannaur police station in Sonipat. A case of murder was registered but remained unsolved as the deceased could not be identified. The breakthrough came when the Delhi Crime Branch, led by Inspector Sandeep Tushir, started investigating the long-standing disappearance of one Pritam Prakash (42), a proclaimed offender and a history-sheeter from Alipur. His wife, Soniya, had lodged a complaint on July 20, 2024, stating that her husband had gone missing on the intervening night of July 5-6. Officials said that during the investigation, the last active location of Printam's phone was traced to Jaji village in Sonipat. Surveillance led the team to Rohit, who was found using the deceased's phone. Initially, he tried to divert the investigation by saying that he had purchased the phone from someone unknown. However, under sustained interrogation, he confessed to his illicit relationship with Soniya and revealed the murder plot. Rohit told the police that Soniya had given a "supari" (contract) to kill her husband and had handed over the phone after the murder. He admitted that the murder was carried out in July 2024, and the body was dumped in a drain. Soniya was subsequently taken into custody. Although she initially misled the police, she eventually broke down when confronted with evidence. She confessed to having paid her sister's brother-in-law, Vijay, to kill Pritam. She told the police that her husband, a repeat offender involved in over 10 criminal cases, including robbery and kidnapping, was abusive and addicted to drugs. She had also asked Rohit to kill her husband, but Rohit demanded Rs 6 lakh by saying that he alone couldn't commit it, and he had to hire someone else. She didn't have so much money. In between, a case was registered against Rohit, and he went underground. According to her statement, following a heated argument on July 2, 2024, she travelled to her sister's house in Gannaur in Rohit's taxi. On July 5, when Pritam arrived to take her back home, she decided to act. She convinced Vijay to murder him for Rs 1 lakh. That night, Pritam stayed back at the house and was killed by Vijay while others were asleep. His body was wrapped in cloth and dumped in a drain near Agwanpur village. The next day, Soniya returned to Delhi and filed a false missing complaint. She later sold Pritam's three-wheeler for Rs 4.5 lakh, cleared her debts, gave Rohit Rs 2.8 lakh and paid Rs 50,000 to Vijay. A few months later, she gave Pritam's phone to Rohit, instructing him to destroy it. However, Rohit kept and used the phone, eventually leading to their arrest. Vijay, the third accused, was arrested in a separate theft case in June 2025 and is lodged in a jail in Haryana. Officials said that DNA samples taken during the autopsy of the unidentified body in July 2024 had been preserved, and further forensic verification was ongoing.

Balasore self-immolation: ‘Hero' student, aide arrested for abetment

Image Credit: PTI BHUBANESWAR: The Crime Branch investigation into the recent self-immolation of a 20-year-old college student in Balasore took a dramatic twist on Monday following the arrest of two students, including one previously hailed as a hero for reportedly trying to save her, on charges of abetment. Investigators found that both students had allegedly instigated the victim to take the extreme step after college authorities failed to address her sexual harassment complaint against the Head of Department (HoD). 'Strong evidence of abetment to suicide led to their arrests,' confirmed IGP, S Shyni of the Crime Against Women and Children's Wing, to TOI. Investigations revealed that the student who claimed to have attempted rescue actually sustained burns while recording the incident on his mobile phone from close proximity. 'Multiple video clips of the incident were recovered from his phone,' another Crime Branch official said. The suspect had earlier garnered public sympathy and media attention for his supposed rescue attempt. While receiving treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for 15% burns, he had recounted: "I rushed toward her when she lit the match, but the flames spread instantly, burning my face and clothes before I could reach her." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The incident occurred on July 12 when the victim, protesting against the administration's inaction on her sexual harassment complaint, doused herself in petrol and self-immolated outside the principal's office. Initially admitted to Balasore district hospital with 95% burns, she was later rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her injuries on July 14 at 11:46 PM. Following public and political outrage, both the accused HoD and college principal were arrested.
