Owen Farrell to captain Lions against First Nations and Pasifika XV

Hamilton Spectator12 hours ago
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Owen Farrell will lead the British and Irish Lions in their last midweek game of the Australian tour on Tuesday against the First Nations and Pasifika XV in Melbourne.
It will be the 20th time Farrell has played for the Lions and his first starting appearance since being drafted into the 2025 squad late as injury cover by his father Andy Farrell, the head coach.
The former England captain went on as a second-half replacement against the AUNZ invitational XV on July 12 in his first game since early May. It'll be the first time on four tours that he'll be captaining the Lions in a game.
The Lions are 6-0 so far on the tour Down Under, including a
27-19 victory
over the Wallabies in the first test at Brisbane on Saturday night.
Leading into the test series, the Lions beat Super Rugby franchises
Western Force,
Queensland Reds
,
Waratahs
and
Brumbies
and an Australia-New Zealand invitational XV.
After the First Nations and Pasifika XV game, the Lions will turn their attention back to trying to clinch the test series in Melbourne on Saturday night. The third test is in Sydney on Aug. 2.
Owen Farrell will play at inside center in a midfield partnership with Jamie Osborne of Ireland.
Scotland scrumhalf Ben White will combine with England flyhalf Fin Smith in the halves.
Blair Kinghorn will return from injury to play fullback in an all-Scotland back three with Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe.
Jac Morgan, the only Welshman left in the 44-man squad, will start on the blindside flank in the tour game in a backrow that also includes young England No. 8 Henry Pollock.
Three days after being involved in the 23-man squad for the first test, backrower Ben Earl and inside backs Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith will sit on the bench for the tour game. Garry Ringrose is returning from injury to take a spot on the replacements bench.
Andy Farrell said the match gave all Lions players 'another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two tests.'
'The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection, they have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places.'
The First Nations and Pasifika squad was selected from players with Indigenous, Fijiian, Samoan, Tongan, Maori and Cook Islands heritage and will be guided by Toutai Kefu, who won a World Cup with Australia and is head coach of Tonga.
Flyhalf Kurtley Beale, who played for Australia against the Lions in the 2013 series, will lead the team which also includes Wallabies contenders Taniela Tupou, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Seru Uru, Filipo Daugunu and Andy Muirhead.

Josh Taylor, former undisputed champion, announces retirement from boxing due to eye injury

Scotland's Josh Taylor has been forced to call time on his storied career. Taylor, 34, announced his retirement from professional boxing on Monday morning due to a recurring eye injury. "The Tartan Tornado" says he was advised by doctors to hang up his gloves or risk losing his eyesight. Taylor (19-3, 13 KOs) was the first four-belt undisputed champion from Britain. He won the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) in 2019, which included wins over IBF super lightweight champion Ivan Baranchyk and WBA titleist Regis Prograis. After emerging out of the WBSS with two belts, Taylor chased the other two titles — held by Jose Ramirez — by signing with Ramirez's promoter, Bob Arum's Top Rank. Taylor ultimately defeated Ramirez in 2021 in Las Vegas to unify the four 140-pound belts. Since then, however, Taylor's career has been nothing short of a nightmare. The Scotsman announced his homecoming title defense against little-known mandatory challenger Jack Catterall. In the opinion of many, Catterall deserved to win on the scorecards on that February 2022 night in Glasgow, but was denied the verdict after a heavily disputed decision went in favor of the local fighter. Taylor gave up three of his championships attempting to make a rematch with Catterall, but that failed, and then he was ordered to defend his WBO belt against Teofimo Lopez. Lopez took Taylor's final title by unanimous decision in 2023. A deal was finally reached for a much-anticipated Taylor vs. Catterall rematch following that defeat — and this time the judges did get it right. Catterall was awarded the decision over Taylor in Leeds, England, in the rematch. Looking for a fresh start after essentially three defeats on the bounce, Taylor moved up to welterweight earlier this year and signed with Frank Warren's Queensberry Promotions to undergo one final run in his career. Essuman, however, outworked and outfought Taylor to hand him another defeat. Although Taylor's retirement officially comes due to an eye injury, the trajectory of his career was heading in that direction anyway. Taylor's journey to capturing all of the belts at super lightweight was special, and he will hope that is his legacy in the sport.

'Ted Lasso' Season 4 first look revealed as filming begins in Kansas City

Ready to "believe" again? Apple TV+ has released a first look photo from the upcoming fourth season of "Ted Lasso," which has officially started production in Kansas City. Filming is also set to take place in London, the streamer said. The photo shows Jason Sudeikis' titular soccer coach seated at a restaurant alongside his old colleagues Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley Jones (Juno Temple). Brett Goldstein's Roy Kent and Brendan Hunt's Coach Beard aren't pictured in the image, but both characters are also returning for the new episodes, Apple has confirmed. Goldstein and Hunt are also producers on the new season. Several supporting characters from the first three seasons of "Lasso," including Nick Mohammed's Nate and Phil Dunster's Jamie Tartt, have not been announced as part of the Season 4 cast. The glimpse at Season 4 comes more than two years after the Emmy-winning soccer comedy aired what appeared to be its final episode in May 2023. The show's first three seasons followed college football coach Ted as he is recruited from Kansas to coach a British soccer team, AFC Richmond. By the end of Season 3, Ted said goodbye to the team and moved back home to the U.S. to be with his son, Henry (Gus Turner). Sudeikis and his fellow "Lasso" producers had said in interviews that a three-season arc was planned from the start of the series. But despite the finality of the Season 3 finale, which also tied up many stories for the supporting characters, Apple never explicitly confirmed that it was the end of "Lasso." After years of fan and media speculation that the show could continue in some form, a fourth season was officially announced in March of this year. 'Ted Lasso' fans can believe it: The show is back for a Season 4, with Ted coaching women In Season 4, "Ted returns to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women's football team," Apple's plot synopsis says, using the British word for soccer. "Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would." Sudeikis teased in a March statement that "as we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to 'look before we leap," in Season 4 "the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it's exactly where they're meant to be." Speaking to USA TODAY in April, Goldstein said he "cried and we had such an emotional goodbye" at the end of Season 3 of "Lasso," but "I do think a part of me thought this wasn't the end." Brett Goldstein on 'wonderful' 'Ted Lasso' revival and his first HBO stand-up special "I just felt like it's such a lovely world," he added. "It sort of felt like surely there'll be a way to do more." Newcomers to the cast in Season 4 include Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsey, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, and Abbie Hern. Grant Feely will take over the role of Ted's son, Henry.
