Shams Charania Hints LeBron James Will Retire Next Season: "Year 23 For No. 23" originally appeared on Fadeaway World.
LeBron James is coming off another inspiring season, bringing up his tally to 22. Now on the verge of entering Year 23, ESPN's Shams Charania hints that it might be James' final one. While discussing the likelihood of James opting in to his contract this season, he said:

"I'm told he's likely to opt in. He's got a player-option about $54-$57 million. He's got a massive player option. That's likely. That's the plan."
Charania then adds why the offer was so lucrative for the Los Angeles Lakers forward. However, he also said that James' decision to keep playing would depend on how competitive the team would be going forward.
On this note, Charania added why this could be the final year for the 40-year-old by saying, "Year 23 for No. 23. They have the All-Star weekend in Los Angeles. So, to me, it's very storybook if that's the way it goes. But that's a decision that he's gotta make."
The ESPN insider added a very important point before concluding. He highlighted that the key, in this scenario, would be whether the Lakers would be able to acquire a "true center" in the offseason.

The Lakers' need for a center was highlighted almost immediately after the team was eliminated from the playoffs. Although the star duo of LeBron James and Luka Doncic looked competitive enough while closing out the regular season, the Lakers and their shortcomings were put on full display against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A 4-1 series loss in the first round reflected the abject lack of depth in the frontcourt. With only Jaxson Hayes holding the fort, it was not enough to hold off the Wolves' frontcourt.
Regardless, the Purple and Gold have been very active thus far. Appearing in virtually all offseason trade chatter, the organization has made its intention of pursuing a legitimate center known, pursuing the likes of Nic Claxton and Daniel Gafford, among many others.
The team would benefit from having James back on the roster next season. Although his contract is a major hit on the team's salary cap, it pales in comparison to the value he brings on the court, even at this age.

In the 2024-25 season, the Lakers forward recorded an average of 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. Even at 40 years old, James was considered among the best players in the league, rightfully earning a spot in the All-NBA Second-Team as well as finishing sixth in the MVP race.
James' ability to do everything is not going to be easy to replicate. But Doncic emerges as an ideal replacement to emulate most of his contributions. A short stint together showcased what they were capable of. An entire season, with the right pieces surrounding them, could see them transform the Lakers into title contenders.

Mizzou's New RB Transfer Expected to Make Immediate Impact

Mizzou's New RB Transfer Expected to Make Immediate Impact originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mizzou's newest addition to the backfield is already turning heads ahead of the 2025 season. Ahmad Hardy, a running back transfer from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, committed to the Tigers last December. He enters Columbia as the highest-graded returning SEC running back for 2025, according to Pro Football Focus. The Mississippi native was one of the most sought-after backs in the transfer portal, receiving interest from SEC programs like Ole Miss and Kentucky. 247Sports ranked him as the No. 6 running back in this year's transfer portal class. Advertisement Ultimately, Hardy said the decision to choose Missouri felt natural. 'I feel like Mizzou was home,' Hardy said. 'They were saying the right stuff, and the coaches and staff, they did their job. And the players, they welcomed me in.' The 5-foot-10, 210-pound back fills a critical need for the Tigers after the departures of Nate Noel and Marcus Carroll, who combined for 1,413 rushing yards in 2024. Their production helped Mizzou to a 10-3 finish and a Music City Bowl win over Iowa. Advertisement He earned Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-Sun Belt honors, topping 100 rushing yards in eight of his 12 games and scoring in all but two. He also caught eight passes for 72 yards, showing his versatility out of the backfield. Perhaps most impressively, Hardy forced 94 missed tackles, the second-most in the nation behind All-American and Heisman contender Ashton Jeanty. Known for his tough, physical running style, Hardy is a natural fit for Missouri's wide-zone offensive scheme—one he already thrived in at ULM. 'We run outside zone like I did at my old school,' Hardy said. 'So I feel like I'm perfecting my craft." The Atlanta Braves waited over two months of the 2025 Major League Baseball season to give 37-year-old All-Star reliever Craig Kimbrel an opportunity. Kimbrel, who signed a minor league deal with the Braves in March, spent the first two months of the 2025 season in Triple-A, waiting to join a struggling Atlanta team. More news: Phillies' $172 Million All-Star Suffers Brutal Setback as Nightmare Season Continues After making 18 appearances in Triple-A — sporting a 2.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 18 innings — Kimbrel finally got the call. On June 6, he flew to San Francisco to join the team to start their series againt the Giants. Later that day, he pitched a scoreless inning, although he did allow a hit and a walk and needed a caught stealing and a pickoff to limit the damage. In the box score, though, it was a zero. The very next day, the Braves designated Kimbrel for assignment. More Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images The move sent shockwaves through the league as Kimbrel, a nine-time All-Star who spent the first five years of his career with Atlanta, was treated like a "run-of-the-mill reliever. Catcher James McCann, another veteran currently stuck with Atlanta's Triple-A team who was also teammates of Kimbrel's last season with the Baltimore Orioles, didn't hold back in his criticism of the organization for their treatment of Kimbrel. "That really frustrated me and a lot of the guys in our locker room were very frustrated with it," McCann said to The Athletic. "It was strange to call him up for a day and DFA him. He's not just a run-of-the-mill reliever who became a journeyman after two or three years in the big leagues. He's a future Hall of Famer." More news: Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani Could Pitch Sooner Than Expected, Per Latest Update McCann also thinks the travel contributed to his struggles on the mound — again, even though he put up a scoreless inning. "I'm not going to speak for Craig, but he was also on a cross-county flight that morning. Maybe he didn't have his legs under him, I'm not sure," McCann said. "At the end of the day, he put up a zero. You can't ask for much more than a zero when you take the mound." Kimbrel ended up clearing waivers and elected free agency, where it didn't take him long to find his next opportunity. He signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers, where he'll again look to work his way back to the major leagues. For more MLB news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

DeMarcus Cousins suspended for season after physical altercations with fans

Former NBA All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins was suspended for the rest of the season in Puerto Rico's basketball league after a near-brawl with fans during a game on Monday. His team, the Guaynabo Mets, terminated his contract as well. The 34-year-old Cousins, who played for seven teams during his NBA career, made an obscene gesture, exchanged words and repeatedly grabbed the arm of a fan sitting courtside Monday night before being taken away by his teammates. Cousins received a second technical foul for his actions and was ejected. In the tunnel heading to the locker room, he argued with another fan whom he grabbed at, as well, while people in the stands threw liquids toward him. Cousins attempted to come back out and engage with the fans again after this, but was held back and escorted out. Cousins received a $4,250 fine and could face an additional one of $5,750, the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league announced late Tuesday. "As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise," the Mets said in a news release. It was Cousins' second season playing in Puerto Rico. He was averaging 18.2 points per game with nine rebounds for a team that has a 9-18 record. In his previous stint with the Mets in the 2023 season, Cousins helped the team reach the semifinals. In the NBA, Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds over 11 seasons. The four-time All-Star's best season came with Sacramento in 2016-17, when he averaged 27.8 points. After the NBA, besides his stop in Puerto Rico, Cousins also played in the Taiwan and Mongolia basketball leagues in 2024 and 2025, respectively, before returning to the Mets in May. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
