As The Lady dies we must fight more than ever to cling on to our Britishness

It was that rare publication read both upstairs and downstairs. A magazine founded in 1885 that combined practical features with advertisements for staff, and that was the longest running women's magazine in the country. Until now. This April's edition will be its last. But unlike Just Stop Oil, The Lady is no virile serpent's head. Its death means exactly that: a little piece of old, traditional Britain dead and buried.
And its demise makes me feel a little mournful. Although it's like that feeling one gets when a pub or village shop shuts. You wonder why it closed then realise that one of the reasons was that you never actually went there.
But then I can offer an excuse that I'm not a lady, nor one of those kinds of ladies, and I've not had enough cause to either find myself frequently advertising for household staff nor, having made an early decision to scribble rather than buttle, seeking relevant work.
Yet the magazine's demise is sad because it represents another brick eroded, then slipping out and falling to the ground, smashed to dust, from the edifice that was once our great nation.
And The Lady was a proper magazine. It had its own building in the middle of London, at number 39/40 Bedford Street in Covent Garden – although it had its heart ripped out when, in 2019, it became physically not a building but a bunch of desks at the Kinetic Centre in Borehamwood. A phenomenon mirroring the state of its advertising and editorial: just as the nouveau pauvre dowager duchess finds herself with her stately home flogged and her staff let go, she downsizes to a flat in London's Dolphin Square with nothing but a weekly cleaner who can't speak English.
The Lady had battled a long-term falling readership and more recently a catastrophic tax bill and a slide in popularity that not even the appointment of Rachel Johnson to the editor's chair in 2009 could arrest. A salutary lesson perhaps that if you want to protect either your magazine or your country from oblivion, a Johnson at the helm is no guarantee of success.
The Lady's first issue, published on Thursday February 19 1885, priced at sixpence and with the tagline of 'A Journal for Gentlewomen', carried advertisements for linen and silk, 'iced savoy moulds', 'fashionable bonnets', the services of 'velveteers', as well as sheet music for 'new dances' and 'songs for ladies voices'.
Its final issue, domestic ads for cooks and chauffeurs aside, features a short story on a granny's 90th birthday and a recipe by Tom Parker Bowles for Gugelhupf; a fruity cake cooked for a dinner given by Queen Victoria at Windsor, on May 14 1874 for His Imperial Majesty, Tsar Alexander II of Russia.
All such little British gems are now discarded like a crumb of that cake. I'm thinking of the likes of the visiting GP; he with his doctor's bag and stethoscope who actually came to your actual house. Or the vocational, charming and incorruptible Conservative member of Parliament, unlike today's rasping and bitter, power-hungry lunatics. Or country sports like shooting and stalking or hunting: once a natural extension of the landscape, as normal and unobtrusive a human endeavour as dry-stone walling, but now politicised and hated. Or fishing, which was once about relaxing by the idyllic banks of a river with maybe the prospect of taking a fish home for dinner, now a televised sport for bores made utterly pointless by 'catch and release'.
Or being able to sit somewhere for a few hours and read a book without a small computer by your side buzzing every few minutes with demands and awful news from the outside world. Or a world where a pub offered only wine, ale or spirits and the only fizzy drink was a tonic for your gin and there was no such thing as 'non-alc' (unless that referred to some rare person who wasn't, like most people, a happily functioning alcoholic).
Trinity College London published a survey this week of British polite-isms, those refined phrases that actually conceal awkwardness or, indeed, seething resentment. The top 10 includes: 'Ooh, could I just squeeze past you?' (Please move out of my way), 'Sounds fun, I'll let you know' (I'm not coming) and 'No rush' (I need it now).
These phrases are one of the few great British things we have left. And I'm reminded of my grandfather Sacheverell who would often say to visitors: 'Will you come back and visit me again before too long,' within about five minutes of their arrival and we all knew what he actually meant.
So as The Lady dies we must battle to cling on to what is left of our Britishness. And if that's not a butler, it's a polite-ism. Use them or we'll lose them.

VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A South Vermillion 8th grader is following in his father's footsteps, as he currently serves as a 'Junior Reporter' for a local Wabash Valley newspaper. Vermillion-Parke On The Level (VPOTL) is a digital newspaper providing coverage in Vermillion and Parke counties daily. The newspaper was launched in June 2024, as a response to the discontinuation of The Clintonian, formerly known as the Daily Clintonian. Eric Jones, served as an editor for the local papers since 2003. With more than 22 years of experience, he created VPOTL to continue to cover local events, town halls, athletics, and meetings for the two counties in west central Indiana. 'Having local news, people reporting and telling people what's going on is a necessary aspect of a functioning community,' said Jones. 'If you do not have that local news, have that coverage, and have people keeping the public in the loop of what's going on, there are a lot of things that just don't work the way they should.' In recent years, Eric's son, Ethan has taken an interest in what his father does day in and day out. 'As a dad, it makes you really proud to see your kid stepping up, taking an interest in what you're doing, and wanting to be involved in things and involved in the community,' said Eric Jones. The 13-year-old first sparked a passion for photography, which gradually evolved his love for writing and journalism. Rightfully so, Ethan's favorite subject in school is English, and writing class. 'I feel like anyone who wants to do journalism should just go for the opportunity because as the world becomes more tech-involved, journalism is becoming less and less of a thing. You don't see as many newspapers running anymore, and its mainly going online,' said Ethan Jones. '(VPOTL) covers everything that happens in Parke and Vermillion County. And it is helpful for the community for us to cover those and keep the community informed.' When he's not busy with school, band practice, or theater performances, Ethan is out in the community covering stories, continuing to learn and grow his skills. 'I have a lot of things that happened during the school year. Over the summer, most of the stuff dies down, and so sometimes I don't get to cover things with dad. But, when I have the opportunity to, I go cover things with my dad mainly to get more experience with covering things, so that things go better with me writing,' said South Vermillion 8th grader. With that, Ethan's father explains how independent his son has grown to be over the years. Ethan is not only growing to be a young man but has now grown to be a reliable 'junior reporter'. 'It's not him following along behind me anymore. He's off doing things and I'm off doing things, and he handles his own side of things very well,' said Eric Jones, Editor for VPOTL. 'The writing side of it take a little bit more time, a little more practice to learn and he is getting into that. I always talk about the importance of taking complicated stuff and make it make sense to people that don't know anything about it.' With a few more years ahead, Ethan is focused on one day taking over Vermillion-Parke On The Level. The 13-year-old has aspirations to attend college and study Journalism, before returning to the newspaper his father launched and created. 'It's not always going to be me, I'm not going to be able to do this forever,' said Mr. Jones. 'I love the idea that he can learn from everything I've learned over the last 22 years. Somewhere along the way he would be able to pick up where I leave off. If not him, I hope that there will be someone willing to do that because I believe it is a necessity.' Looking ahead, the reporting duo looks forward to covering the upcoming 2025 Vermillion County Fair together that kicks off Saturday, June 14th and runs through Saturday, June 21st. Fisherman catches rare lobster twice in two weeks

A fisherman has caught a rare blue lobster twice in a fortnight. Marc Newton, 35, hauled in the brightly-coloured crustaceans from the English Channel just 12 days apart. The fourth-generation fisherman, from Beer, Devon, caught the electric blue lobsters despite extreme odds, which some marine biologists have estimated are about two million to one. The rare colour is caused by a genetic mutation, which prompts the over-production of a certain protein. Mr Newton released the lobsters back into the waters on both occasions. The family fishing boat, Bess, is skippered by his father Jim, who has been fishing since he could walk. Mr Newton said: 'Our family has been supplying fresh local fish from our shop on Beer beach for the last 45 years. 'We're now the fourth generation carrying on this tradition.' He wrote in a social media post: 'Here he is again. On the left, we caught what looks like the same rare blue lobster as the other day. 'What do you think? Same or a different one?' Blue lobsters have been caught near Plymouth, Polperro, and Bangor, Northern Ireland, in recent years. It is even rarer for lobsters to be white in colour – only about one in 100 million are. In 2019, an albino lobster was caught near Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and donated to the National Trust. The lobster's appearance was caused by a genetic defect called leucism, which leaves it with no pigment in its shell. Blue lobster is considered a delicacy, and starred in a lavish state dinner hosted by Emmanuel Macron for King Charles in 2023. The Élysée Palace spent close to €500,000 on the September visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla, which included about €40,000 on wine. The starter of blue lobster and crab was inspired by Louis XIV's tastes. The feast was executed by a team of 45 chefs led by Yannick Alléno, Anne-Sophie Pic and French pastry chef Pierre Hermé, all of whom have Michelin stars.
