DISTRAUGHT mother, Raquel Beck, 52, this week described the pain and horror she felt when both her sons were gunned down and robbed of their jewellery outside St Mary's Catholic Church, in Merebank, while attending their uncle's funeral on Saturday.
Tevin Luke Beck, 31, was shot 11 times in his face and abdomen, and died on his way to hospital while in the arms of his wife, Michelle Beck.
His younger brother Keagan, 26, was shot five times in his back, and doctors told his family that he was brain dead. He died in hospital a short while later.
The brothers, who grew up in Wentworth, moved to Johannesburg in 2020, and started a security company called Atrack.
They were in Durban for their uncle's funeral when they were killed.
Michelle said Tevin, a father of two, had given a speech at the funeral at around midday.

'Uncle Clinton had died of a heart attack, so we travelled to Durban for the funeral. Tevin, Keagan and Clinton had shared a close bond. After Tevin gave his speech, he left the podium and signaled for me to come outside. He was carrying our three-year-old daughter, who was asleep,' she said.
'He told me that he felt like he was going to throw up. We went to the car and he put our daughter down to sleep on the back seat. We then went outside the church entrance with Keagan to smoke a cigarette so that Tevin could calm down, as he was emotional.
'We saw a black polo with no number plates and two guys with balaclavas run towards us. They both had guns. Tevin pushed me towards the entrance of the church and told me to run. While running, I heard gunshots. My worst nightmare then unfolded,' Michelle said.
Raquel said she believed that the motive for the killing was linked to jealousy related to her sons moving to Johannesburg and starting their own security company and 'old grudges' from when they lived in Wentworth.
She urged social media users to refrain from spreading false information that her sons were drug dealers and gangsters who were killed due to a turf war.
'I was outside the church and I saw a black vehicle parked outside the church. I thought that it was people coming to pay their respects at the funeral. When I heard the gunshots, I ran outside the church gate as I knew my sons were there.
'I found them on the floor, riddled with bullets. I held them, and screamed.
'The shooters had already gotten away. My sons were robbed of their jewellery after the shooting. It was heart-breaking to see my two children with gunshot wounds, bleeding in the street,' she added.
Raquel said Tevin had worked hard to make a life for himself in Johannesburg, away from Wentworth, which was plagued with gangsterism and killings.
'Tevin moved to Johannesburg in 2020 and founded Atrack in 2023. He kept in touch with the youngsters and his friends from Wentworth and was instrumental in helping youth get out of drugs, and inspiring them to change their lives.
'He convinced some of them to leave Wentworth, and turn their lives around. He gave them jobs in the security company. People on social media said that my sons were gangsters and involved in drug dealing. This is not true. I believe that this shooting was linked to jealousy.
'The only problem that he had was in high school, where he had an altercation with a few boys. He was not in a gang, but this shooting could be linked to a high school grudge. Although those involved in that altercation e have been deceased for many years. I think it was their children or younger relatives who held the grudge and carried out the shooting. We never imagined something like this would ever happen,' said the distraught mom.
Raquel said the family would hold a closed funeral for the brothers, and they would not be publishing details for fear of the safety of their remaining family members.
'Tevin has two children, aged eight and three, and Keagan has a 10-year-old daughter. We are not sure how to break the news of their father's deaths to them. My sons took care of my husband and I. We will be lost without them. I pray that their killers are caught, even though we do not have faith in the police due to corruption,' she added.
Father Herman Giraldo, a Brazilian national living in South Africa for 24 years, said he had been the head of St Mary's Catholic Church for the past 15 years, and had 'never seen anything like this' in his life.
He said he was still in shock.
'Tevin had just completed his speech and I went to the pulpit to pray. While I was conducting the prayer to release the body of Clinton, I heard what sounded like fireworks. The church was packed with about 150 mourners. The gunshots went on for about 30 seconds and I saw people scramble to safety, some of them lay flat on the floor.
"I could not understand what was going on at first, as I never expected people to shoot at a church. I then also took cover. When we got outside, we were met with a gruesome scene. The driver of the hearse was in shock, as he was nearly killed during the shooting. I personally believe the shooting was gang related. Normally people do not kill others for nothing or by mistake.
'The incident was traumatic for the family, especially for the granny. She was at the funeral of her son, and her grandchildren were killed. I had to calm her down and get her to complete the prayer. When we spoke to her later that day, she could not remember conducting the prayer for her son, as she was traumatised and in shock,' Father Giraldo said.

Durban High Court hears evidence of discrepancies in waste collection audit in DSW matter

Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and second accused Mondli Michael Mthembu. Image: Nomonde Zondi During proceedings at the Durban High Court yesterday, it emerged that the number of houses requiring waste collection in December 2017 had doubled. Furthermore, the audit report supporting this figure may have been inaccurate. The Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender fraud case involves former eThekwini Municipality mayor Zandile Gumede, who is one of the 21 accused. They face multiple charges, including fraud, racketeering, corruption, money laundering, and violations of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Municipal Systems Act, all related to the R320 million DSW tender. A state witness, who worked at the solid waste unit in 2017, compared the number of households requiring waste services as reflected in the closed tender drafted in December 2017 with the number indicated in the audit report. She noticed a significant difference of 86,431 households between the tender and the audit report. Allan Robert Abbu, the fourth accused, was the deputy head of the Solid Waste Unit at that time. The witness, who cannot be named due to court instructions, stated that the number of households reflected in the tender's bid specifications was drawn from an audit report. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The audit report is compiled using various methods, including field sheets and aerial photographs of areas needing waste collection services. In her evidence-in-chief, the witness mentioned that she could not explain the source of the additional numbers. The defence challenged the State's assertion that Abbu dictated these additional numbers to a contract administrator who drafted the December tender document. Advocate Jay Naidoo SC, counsel for Abbu, pointed out that the contract administrator who testified did not support this claim. During his cross-examination, Naidoo, who also represents Gumede, examined the audit report with the witness. He read a page that included a declaration made by the auditors, highlighting a column labelled "Accuracy and Validity Risk." Naidoo quoted, "Data on the measurement/payment certificates indicating the percentage of households with access to a basic level of solid waste removal may be invalid or inaccurate." He then asked the witness what this meant. The witness confirmed that the report was compiled by the city's internal auditors and noted that the aerial photographs used were taken in 2011. The trial continues.

ANCYL slams corruption in Polokwane municipality, calls for arrests over scandals

ANC Youth League President Collen Malatji calls for accountability in the Polokwane municipality. Image: Timothy Bernard / African News Agency (ANA) ANC Youth League (ANCYL) President, Collen Malatji, is calling for urgent accountability in the damning corruption allegations involving the Polokwane municipality officials, including the mayor. In an interview with IOL, Malatji said: 'Anyone caught participating in corrupt activities must face the full might of the law. Law enforcement agencies must act urgently and decisively.' Mayor John Mpe is facing growing scrutiny following accusations of irregularly awarding tenders and allegedly giving political and economic favours to foreign nationals. The allegations have triggered public outrage and renewed questions about ethical leadership within the ruling party. Mpe remains in office. He is not charged with any wrongdoing. Malatji did not mince words, stating that those implicated — including leadership — must be "brought to book" without delay. While urging for unity in Limpopo — a historically significant base for the ANC — Malatji stressed that unity cannot exist without discipline and accountability. 'Limpopo is a special province. The ANC must protect it with everything we have, and that begins with rooting out corruption from within our own ranks,' he said. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Malatji's comments come amid increasing tensions and factionalism in the province, worsened by open social media spats and intra-party hostility. 'We cannot allow members to insult each other publicly. Those who do must face disciplinary action,' he added. Though he steered clear of directly naming factions, Malatji made it clear that internal power struggles must not override the principles of integrity and service. 'I won't enter factional claims about who does what — mine is a call for unity, discipline, and swift justice.' The call for an investigation into the corruption allegations adds pressure on ANC leadership, especially as it goes to the local government elections. As corruption continues to gnaw at public trust, the ANCYL's firm stance on rooting out corruption is becoming increasingly clear. Meanwhile, IOL previously reported that Mpe defended himself against the allegations, saying there was nothing wrong with awarding tenders to foreign-owned companies. He added that the claims were baseless and politically motivated. IOL Politics

Nedbank denies allegations of rand manipulation by Competition Commission

The Constitutional Court in Johannesburg heard arguments by various banks, including Nedbank, that it was not part of a conspiracy to manipulate the rand/US dollar. Image: Timothy Bernard / Independent Newspapers Due to the cryptic nature of the allegations against Nedbank by the Competition Commission that this bank was part of a conspiracy to manipulate the rand, Nedbank has no case to answer as there is not a shred of evidence regarding any wrongdoing against it. This is according to Advocate Anthony Gotz SC, who on Wednesday told the Constitutional Court that Nedbank should never have been added as a respondent in the Competition Commission's referral of the matter to the tribunal. This argument follows the Competition Commission's appeal following last year's judgment in which the Competition Appeal Court (CAC) cleared 13 banks - including Nedbank - from facing the music in a later trial regarding the rand/US dollar manipulation saga. Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, acting on behalf of the Competition Commission, on Monday told the Constitutional Court that there is enough evidence to establish a prima facie case that they were involved in the manipulation of the rand. Next Stay Close ✕ The Competition Commission, in its initial referral of the complaint to the Competition Tribunal, did not list Nedbank as one of the suspects. It, however, amended its referral in 2020 during which Nedbank was included as one of the alleged conspirators of the rigging of the rand. Gotz said in its application to join Nedbank, the commission pleaded a broad conspiracy against the bank, but the allegations were narrow. The allegations were based solely on the commission's assessment regarding trading data on the Reuters platform. This platform does not reflect trades - it's a public platform which simply indicates the prices at which traders are willing to buy and sell currency, Gotz said. According to him, the case against Nedbank is based on the commission's assessment of trading data over six years. 'This is not a case of Nedbank being a participant in any chatroom - in this respect Nedbank is different from the other respondents,' Gotz said. He argued that the allegations against Nedbank are skeletal and there are only a few instances which lasted minutes each on the Reuters platform, on which the commission is now relying. Gotz said these allegations are not made specifically against Nedbank, but against other banks that they had withheld quotes. This, he argued, is definitely not enough to establish that Nedbank was part of any conspiracy to rig the rand. He questioned how it could be suggested that this bank was part of an international cartel. Gotz also pointed out that the few instances the commission is relying on happened six months to a year apart. 'The commission cannot make allegations in the air. We accept that in cartel cases, it is difficult to identify each perpetrator, but this is not a licence for the commission to do what it has done,' he argued.
