Standing ovation, gold medal, this cloud-like flat bed with quilted topper and fluffy 400-thread-count duvet is a sky cocoon. There are 45 Aria Suites in a 1-2-1, herringbone pattern divided between a forward and rear cabin and three dedicated bathrooms.
The seats themselves are 21 inches (53.3 centimetres) wide, with a pitch of 43 inches (109.2 centimetres), and 75 inches (190.5 centimetres) long when flat. Every whisker of space is working hard; an armrest flattens, widening the bed at the shoulder, the foot well accommodates knees-bent side sleepers, and a shoulder-high sliding door provides privacy. Leather-clad headrests and oyster hues add to the premium hotel feel.
Entertainment + tech
Woah, now that's a screen, 24 inches (60.96 centimetres) of 4K ultra-high-definition awesomeness. There's even a dedicated 4K movie category and I go into a short-list frenzy, covering all bases with the realistic bloodbath of Gladiator II and more sedate Wilding with phenomenal macro nature images.
There's Bluetooth for personal earphones, an in-table phone charger (the USB-A and USB-C charging ports are faster) and I develop a design crush on the innovative inbuilt control panel and screen app for checking lavatory status. Micro details like the light diffuser (but why no spot lamp for reading?) and the cubby's non-slip pad for potentially sliding items whisper quiet luxury.
Service
A passing staff member responds to a seat belt adjustment request with 'I'll be right back!' and disappears into the void. I press the call button to un-Japanese the TV language and end up waving at a crew member like I'm hailing a taxi. In the witching hours, I do a second call button test (for a hot chocolate) and a crew member appears within milliseconds – a more accurate depiction of the engaging and professional crew's famous standards.
The full cabin of first-time Aria guests unfamiliar with the suites (it's also most of the crew's first Aria flight, one confides, making me immediately empathetic), means initially the five crew are simply run off their feet with questions. Cathay Pacific, do your exceptional staff a favour and add a sixth member until Aria-frenzy settles.
Food
Food is a highlight – a prawn amuse bouche is followed by a silky zucchini soup with deliciously crunchy croutons and tender braised chicken with mushrooms and bamboo shoots in oyster sauce.
Sustainability
Cathay Pacific aims for zero carbon emissions by 2050 and has been a pioneer of sustainable aviation fuel, co-initiating the Hong Kong Sustainable Aviation Fuel Coalition.
One more thing
The business class galley features artwork, a mindscape by Hong Kong artist Victor Wong (of the Gallery in the Skies program), an unexpected cultural nod.

Could this be the best business class in the skies? A resounding yes. Famed for its design savvy legacy, Cathay has knocked the ball out of the stratosphere with thoughtful technology and style, deservedly the winner of best new business class at TheDesignAir Awards. The last airline to sport such innovation was the Finnair business seat, but the bonuses of privacy doors and exemplary staff in the air and in the stellar lounges make Cathay Pacific the one to beat.

‘Most people don't know': Points guru Steve Hui reveals best frequent flyer programs after Qantas devaluation
A points expert has weighed in on Qantas' move to 'devalue' frequent flyer points by up to 20 per cent and revealed the top three airline rewards programs. On Tuesday, Qantas officially updated the 'value' of its Frequent Flyer points, which saw the number of points required to redeem flight rewards increase by up to 20 per cent. These changes represent the first increase to Classic reward seat pricing in six years and second time since 2004. Steve Hui is the founder iFLYflat, a business which helps companies and individuals strategise and maximise their points-earning potential. 'We're about earning points on the ground then using the points to pay for the flight,' he told Often called Australia's 'points whisperer', Mr Hui is the go-to guy for securing business class travel for rock bottom prices by utilising points. Mr Hui said the Qantas move was a 'wake up call' for Aussies looking to get more value out of their airline rewards points. 'It's a wake up call not to have all your eggs in one basket,' he said. 'If all you had is Qantas, then your points are now worth 20 per cent less today.' However, the expert also credited the flying kangaroo for their transparency and pointed out airlines often devalue points leaving most flyers 'none the wiser'. 'Most people don't know how many points it takes to fly so in that way, Qantas were generous in giving people notice,' he said. Ahead of the devaluation, Qantas pre-emptively boosted the number of points members will earn on Qantas domestic flights by up to 25 per cent, delivering around 4 billion additional points for members each year. Beginning later this year, members will have access to up to 1 million additional international Classic Reward seats with flagship partners Finnair, Air France, KLM, and Hawaiian Airlines. Meanwhile, Virgin Velocity made a series of changes to its program in January, making reward seats more expensive across its international and partner network. When it comes to airline rewards programs, Mr Hui says three international players are nearly unbeatable for value, especially redeeming business class flights with points. 'Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer), Cathay Pacific (Asia Miles) and Qatar Airways (Avios) offer most bang for buck,' he said. 'But unlike Qantas and Virgin you couldn't just go to the corner shop and earn points for other airlines.' Earning points from foreign airlines is set to get a whole lot easier with the launch of the app Passport Rewards on Wednesday. Points earned through purchases made via the Passport Rewards app can then be transferred to a range of airline reward programs, including Cathay Pacific, Etihad and Qatar Airways. From Sydney to London to New York, members earn rewards simply by linking their debit or credit card and shopping as they normally would. Over 300 retail partners including Woolworths, BWS, Myer, Bing Lee, Big W, Virgin Australia, Guess, Breville, Puma, and Lenovo have already signed on. Once you start building a points stash, Mr Hui urged travellers to resist the temptation to pay half cash, half points for an economy flight, which effectively dilutes the value of the points. 'The 'half half' flights are terrible value, you just don't want to pay part with cash,' he said. 'The airlines want to give you lots of options (but) you've got to know the right option to choose.' Instead, try to store up points for bigger ticket items, like an international business class flight.

Plenty of travellers already chuck an AirTag or a Bluetooth tracker in their bag, but those only work properly if you're in the Apple ecosystem or within short range. This is the first time a major airline has built dual-network tracking directly into a suitcase, meaning it works out of the box on both iPhone and Android, anywhere in the world. Cathay Pacific's Aria Suites touch down in Melbourne
Cathay Pacific's newly retrofitted planes will soon start flying out of Melbourne, extending its Australian service after the Hong Kong-based airline chose Sydney as the first non-European destination to fly its Aria Suites earlier this year. From Sunday, Cathay Pacific's flight CX 104 from Melbourne to Hong Kong and flight CX 105 from Hong Kong to Melbourne will feature the new business class product.
