All-star lineup: Aphelion, a game made in collaboration with the European Space Agency

What defines a game by Don't Nod, the French studio behind acclaimed narrative dramas Life Is Strange, Tell Me Why and Lost Records: Bloom and Rage? Dmitri Weideli, an executive producer at the company, has a hard time replying to this question at first, and then settles on an answer that seems rather broad. 'We want to make games that matter and that give players a great story that allows them to go through different kinds of emotions,' he says. 'We try to diversify the kind of games we create, but at the same time, keep the same spirit.'
There's certainly something to this idea of diversification. Since its founding in 2008, the French outfit has made action-adventure games about memory, narrative games involving magical college students, and a role-playing game about a Georgian vampire. Recently, it released Jusant, an ecological sci-fi fable that was also a refreshingly realistic take on rock climbing.
Aphelion, the team's latest, does have a little in common with Jusant, at least. It is another science-fiction game, but one with a glitteringly hard edge. It's based around a mission to the edge of the solar system where an icy world called Persephone has been discovered. Somewhat inevitably, the crew crashlands on the planet, and what follows is a journey of exploration, survival and stealth in a harsh alien climate.
It's not hard to look at the trailer with its grappling hook and walls of climbable ice and view this as a spiritual successor to Jusant. This is not the case, according to Weideli. The team working on the new game actually came directly from another project, the episodic supernatural game, Tell Me Why.
The emphasis is different, too. Aphelion's climbing is simpler than Jusant's, which could get very technical in places, and it's not the central preoccupation this time around. Several developers who worked on Jusant have joined the Aphelion team in the last few months, however, and have shared their experiences dealing with rope physics and vertical level design.
The real inspiration for Aphelion largely came from movies such as Interstellar, The Martian, Ad Astra and Arrival. 'We wanted to create a great story-driven game,' says Weideli. 'But we wanted to go within another genre, that led us to a more action-adventure oriented game.'
Intriguingly, everywhere you look in Aphelion there's the presence of real science. Persephone itself is based on Planet Nine, a hypothetical large planet that many astronomers believe orbits the sun far beyond Neptune where it is patiently awaiting discovery.
But Planet Nine is only the starting point for the fiction here. 'Planet Nine was an important source of inspiration,' Weideli says, 'and an interesting scientific grounding for an adventure featuring astronauts who explore a new planet. [But] we then added our own lore, imagination, and most importantly, human drama.'
Aphelion is also pitched as a collaboration with the European Space Agency. 'The ESA team gave us access to space experts and scientists, with whom we could discuss and challenge our ideas about the story of the game,' Weideli says. 'For example, our narrative team could discuss the scientific aspects of a space or extraterrestrial mission, review the vocabulary of a space mission, how astronauts talk to each other during a mission. They also offered to review and give advice regarding the technology.'
The design team won't be playing things entirely straight, however. Alongside exploration and survival, there's that final element: Aphelion is also a stealth game. Weideli isn't ready to talk about it yet, but something has survived out in the ice of Persephone, and it doesn't seem entirely friendly.
Whatever lurking horrors await, it's nice to see Don't Nod back making complex, hard-to-classify video games, after a recent round of redundancies. With so many people working in games at the moment engaged in an awful real-world spin on the survival genre, it's thrilling to see a team still turning to the stars.
Aphelion is released next year on PC, PS5 and Xbox

Should Starmer remove Prince Andrew's titles? Richard Kay weighs in and reveals why governments won't touch the issue and the 'can of worms' that would open in PALACE CONFIDENTIAL

The question of whether Prince Andrew should be stripped of his titles has come to the spotlight once again ahead of the publication of Andrew Lownie's explosive new biography. Based on four years of painstaking research and hundreds of interviews, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, has been exclusively serialised by the Daily Mail. From Prince Andrew's peculiar sexual habits to Sarah Ferguson 's friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, Mr Lownie uncovered a long list of the York family's secrets. 'There is very little that the Royal Family can actually do when it comes to Prince Andrew,' said Daily Mail's Editor-at-Large Richard Kay on the latest episode of Palace Confidential. 'He's been effectively sacked. He's the only royal prince who has been sacked from public life that I can think of. 'Short of sending him far, far away - and who would want him? - I think it's very insulting when I keep reading suggestions of sending him to the Falkland Islands. Do the people there particularly want Prince Andrew? I doubt it very much. 'So it's difficult to know what to do with him. He's just going to be there. They have managed it fairly well. He doesn't have any kind of public role. 'What about stripping him of everything? Well, he was born a prince, and he was given a dukedom. 'The one thing they could possibly do would be to remove the dukedom, but I think it would have to come through parliament, and I can't see any government of any shade wanting to get involved in anything like this. It would open up a real can of worms.' The question of whether the Duke should have his titles removed is this week's question in the Palace Confidential newsletter. So far, just six per cent of readers have responded 'no' to the question Richard stars on the hit YouTube panel show alongside Daily Mail's Diary Editor Richard Eden and Royal Editor Rebecca English. Rebecca, who had covered the royal beat for the Daily Mail since 2004, added: 'It's a hugely tricky one for them because he is there and he exists. 'They can't airbrush him out - he is a member of their family.' In an exclusive interview in the latest edition of the Daily Mail's royal newsletter, Palace Confidential, Mr Lownie said he contacted over 3,000 former school contemporaries, staff, colleagues and associates of the couple. 'Of whom 300 spoke to me,' Mr Lownie said. 'Some on the record, but most off. 'They felt it was time to challenge the York family's carefully curated narrative. 'It is difficult because there tends to be a code of silence about the royals (no one wants to be cast out of the privileged circle). 'Additionally, their staff have to sign NDAs, royals are not fully subject to the Freedom of Information Act and there are strict limits on what questions MPs can ask about them in Parliament. 'I could also add the letters I received threatening to sue me, before a word of the manuscript had been seen. Charming people.' In the Palace Confidential episode, Richard Kay then goes on to point out that within the Royal Family, there is an instinct to 'circle the wagons and protect one of their own'. He added: 'Their first response in all these cases is "Oh, it's just the press, it's the media". This is different. This is a graphic book written by a figure who has some substance in the writing he has done. 'You can't just brush this away.' Richard Eden said: 'Certainly, what the King could do, and something that I have advocated for a long while, is strip him of his role as a Counsellor of State' Having covered the royal beat for more than 20 years, Richard Eden had his own thoughts on whether Andrew should be stripped of his titles. He said: 'Certainly, what the King could do, and something that I have advocated for a long while, is strip him of his role as a Counsellor of State. 'He and Prince Harry still have the legal right to deputise for the King. That could easily be stripped from them, as well as his title of Duke of York or other things if they wanted to. 'He is still in the line of succession. Yes, it would take an Act of Parliament, but that's no big deal. 'The King did it recently when he extended the list of Counsellors of State to include Princess Anne and Prince Edward. It could be done very easily indeed. 'That's something which I would strongly suggest he does.' Elsewhere in the episode, the panel discuss the possibility of Prince William taking 'decisive action' about aspects of the monarchy in the years to come.

Olivia added: 'I was always so positive, and when you try to be 100% positive all the time, when something bad happens, it hits even harder." Despite the pain, Olivia found comfort in knowing that the baby she lost had been reabsorbed into her body by the 14-week mark. She said: 'It's a tremendously sad experience, but knowing that the baby is still a part of me helps me hold on to their memory." When asked if she would have preferred not to know about the loss, Olivia admitted, 'It's a hard question. I feel lucky to have experienced the brief moment of possibly having twins, even if it was for just a short time.' While still grieving the loss of their baby, Olivia and Alex said they're looking forward to the future with their two-year-old son Abel, who is eager to become a big brother. Olivia shared: 'Abel talks to the baby through my belly button. He's going to be the best big brother ever.' 6 6 6 6
