
From ‘Make in India' to Char Dham: New NCERT Class 7 textbooks emphasise Indian culture, sacred geography
The content of the new English textbook – 'Poorvi' – and Social Science textbook – 'Exploring Society: India and Beyond' – aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020's vision of education being 'strongly rooted in the Indian and local context and ethos.'
Out of 15 stories, poems, and narrative pieces in the English textbook, nine are by Indian writers or feature content and characters that are Indian, including works by Rabindranath Tagore, APJ Abdul Kalam, and Ruskin Bond. The book also includes pieces on mountaineer Arunima Sinha, the national war memorial, and a comic on warrior queen Rani Abbakka from Karnataka.
For comparison, 'Honeycomb', the old class 7 English textbook, which was first published in 2006-07 based on the National Curriculum Framework 2005, had 17 stories, poems, and other writing, including four by Indian writers (a story each by writers Vasantha Surya and Sharada Dwivedi; a comic titled 'Gopal and the Hilsa Fish'; a piece on the national war memorial).
The Social Science textbook features a dedicated chapter titled 'How the Land Becomes Sacred' that focuses on sacred places and pilgrimages across India and outside for religions like Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and 'tirthayatras' or pilgrimages in the Jain tradition
It references the recently concluded Kumbh Mela and the 'estimated 660 million people who participated' in it. The chapter introduces concepts like 'sacred geography' – networks of sacred places including 12 jyotirlingas, the char dham yatra, and the 'Shakti pithas' – locations 'across the subcontinent' where the body parts of Shakti fell.
It also highlights the sacred ecology of India, where natural features like river confluences, mountains, and forests are revered. The Kumbh Mela, held at Prayagraj, is discussed with reference to the participation of 'an estimated 660 million people' and its mythological origins linked to the 'amrita manthana'.
The chapter also references sacred traditions beyond India, such as those in ancient Greece and New Zealand.
Asked about the objective behind including a chapter on sacred places in the geography section of the textbook, Michel Danino, head of the NCERT committee for social science, directed this newspaper to the NCERT. NCERT Director Dinesh Saklani did not provide an immediate response to the query.
Unlike the previous structure where history, geography, and civics were split across three different textbooks, the new Exploring Society integrates these disciplines. Part one, released this month, also covers janapadas and mahajanapadas, the varna-jati system, ancient dynasties like the Mauryas and Guptas, an introduction to the Constitution, and types of governments. The textbook acknowledges that while the varna-jati system initially provided societal stability, it later became rigid, particularly under British rule, leading to inequalities. Part two of this textbook is expected later, officials said.
The rollout of these new textbooks for classes 4, 5, 7, and 8 follows similar updates for classes 1 and 2 in 2023 and classes 3 and 6 in 2024. All are designed in line with the NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023, which emphasise incorporating India's rich traditions, philosophies, knowledge systems, and local context into school education.

Urdu short story: ‘What kind of nationalism is it to live in India and have an Arabic name?'
I'd said to myself: Why don't I do my own Bhartiya-karan, that is, Indianise myself, before someone else thinks of doing it? The first problem was my name. Perhaps you don't know: my name is Iqbal Chand. It occurred to me that 'Iqbal' is an Arabic word. What kind of nationalism is it to live in India and have an Arabic name? And so, I changed my name to Kangaal Chand. As it happens, this name is far better suited to my financial condition considering that 'kangaal' means 'poor'. And why just me, it suits the rest of my country too. The second problem that arose was of the dress. There was no trace of Indianness in the pants, coat and tie that I wore. In fact, all three were a reflection of my slave mentality. I was amazed that I had worn them all this while. I decided to wear pajamas instead of pants. But then, a certain Persian person told me that the pajama had come to India from Iran. And so, I began to wear dhoti and kurta. But not a kameez, as the word 'kameez', too, is of Arabic origin and it reeks of the stench and stink of an Arab! The third problem was of hair! After all, was it not treachery against the country, a blatant form of antinationalism, to keep one's hair fashioned in the English style? I instructed the barber to keep only one lock of long hair at the back of my head and shave off the rest. He did exactly that. I had seen images from ancient India showing men with long and lush moustaches. Following their example, I began to grow my moustache. When my friends saw the large moustache on my somewhat small face, they assumed that I had put on a fake one, possibly because I was acting in some play. Forget my friends, when I saw myself in this new look, I began to feel that I had been created not by God, but Shankar, the cartoonist. But I did not lose heart. One has to do all manner of things to be Indian. Now we come to my eyeglasses. I asked several pandits: 'Is there any mention of eyeglasses in the Ramayana or the Mahabharata?' They said: 'In those days people didn't eat vanaspati ghee and so their eyesight did not weaken while they were still young.' I asked: 'Did Sugreev, Kunbhkaran, Dushasan and all the rest have such good eyesight that they never felt the need to wear eyeglasses?' The pandits replied: 'All of them applied kajal in their eyes.' I found the solution to my problem. I took off my spectacles and began to apply kajal. As a consequence, when it got dark, I began to mistake a rope for a snake and a goat for a dog. And when I attempted to read a book, the words turned into black doodles. In a few days, even during the day, I began to mistake one thing for another. I consulted an eye doctor. He advised: 'If you don't wish to become blind, kindly wear your spectacles.' 'But it is not Indian.' 'How does it matter? This watch that you have strapped on your wrist is not Indian and this cigarette that you are smoking isn't Indian either.' 'You have rightly reminded me. From tomorrow, I shall smoke a huqqah.' 'What have you decided about the watch?' 'I shall take it off.' 'And if you have to know the time?' 'I shall ask someone.' 'Do as you please, but kindly wear your spectacles, or else you will lose your eyesight.' Thinking that I would simply add to the number of blind people in India if I were to become blind, I went back to wearing my glasses. One night, as I was watching television, a friend of mine pointed out somewhat caustically, 'Television is not Indian.' Ruing his utter ignorance, I said, 'If there was no television in ancient India, how could Sanjay give an eyewitness account of the events of the great war of Mahabharata to King Dhritrashtra?' 'It was a miracle of yog and meditation.' 'You may call it a miracle of yog. I would like to believe that Sanjay had a television set.' 'What happened to that set after Sanjay's death?' 'It was destroyed in the great war of Mahabharata.' A few days later, another friend picked on me. He said: 'You have done your Bhartiya-karan, but why do you still wear boots?' 'I shall wear a joota from tomorrow.' I found it quite difficult to walk in the joota because it bit my foot terribly. But I paid no heed to the pain. However, wagging tongues will wag as long as people have something to say. Someone said, 'Why do you always go to the office in a bus or a taxi? You should travel in a chariot or a palanquin.' Annoyed, I replied, 'Where are palanquins and chariots to be found in the twentieth century?' 'Then you should walk.' 'The office is eight miles away. How can I go on foot?' 'Then forget this business of Bhartiya-karan.' 'I can't do that.' In a sly tone, they got back with another quip. 'Your wife still wears lipstick and powder. When will her Bhartiya-karan take place?' The words were bitter but true. I vowed that I would insist that my wife henceforth colour her lips with betel juice and use sandalwood paste instead of face powder. Now I thought that no one could point a finger at me and say that I was not one hundred per cent Indian. But I was proved to be wrong. One evening, a group of young men came to my house under the pretext of congratulating me. In the course of the conversation, they said to me, 'Despite being a complete Indian, why do you have a telephone in your house?' 'The telephone is a necessity for everyday life.' 'But it was not invented in India.' 'Nor was electricity.' 'You are absolutely correct. You must light lamps instead of electric bulbs.' 'How can lamps give sufficient light?' 'Why have you kept chairs in your house?' 'To sit on.' 'The ancient Indians did not sit on chairs.' 'Where did they sit?' 'On the floor.' After a lapse of a few minutes, one young man spoke up. 'Why do you drink tea?' 'What else should I drink?' 'Joshanda.' 'Joshanda is not worth drinking.' 'Fine, then drink milk.' 'I can't digest milk. Moreover, it is very expensive.' 'Why does your son study in medical college?' 'I want him to become a doctor.' 'Why doctor? Why not vaid?' 'I don't have any faith in the Ayurvedic system.' 'But that's pure Indian.' 'Maybe. But I don't like it.' 'You like all other Indian things, why not this?' 'I don't have an answer to this question.' 'Then that means that you are not a hundred per cent Indian.' They went away. But I was left in a terrible dilemma. Despite everything I had done, I had still not done a complete Bhartiya-karan on myself. Will I really have to light lamps? Must I drink joshanda? Will I have to send my son to the gurukul? And even when I have done all this, the nit-pickers will still say: Why do you read an English newspaper? Why do you take penicillin injections? Why do you eat cakes and biscuits? Why do you call your wife 'Darling'? After thinking long and hard, I decided to make an announcement through the newspapers: 'I have done my Bhartiya-karan to the extent it was possible. I do not have the capacity to do any further Bhartiya-karan.'

Founded by a general, reimagined by scholars: The 330-year-old Delhi school that outlived empires
Tucked behind the busy Ajmeri Gate in Old Delhi stands a school that has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the transformation of a city, and the reshaping of education in India. Anglo Arabic Senior Secondary School is not just one of the oldest running schools in the country, it's a living archive of India's cultural, political, and academic evolution. What began in 1696 as a modest madrasa founded by a Mughal general has grown into a school that continues to educate hundreds of students each year, carrying forward a legacy built across centuries. The general who planted the first seed The school's story begins with Ghazi ud-Din Khan Feroze Jung I, a powerful general in the court of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Known for his military prowess in the Deccan and as the father of Qamar-ud-din Khan, the first Nizam of Hyderabad, Ghaziuddin Khan founded a madrasa outside the walled city of Shahjahanabad. His vision was to create a centre for Islamic and Persian learning, an idea ahead of its time in 17th-century Delhi. The madrasa, which came to be known as Madrasa Ghaziuddin Khan, was built near Ajmeri Gate and initially flourished as a hub of classical education. But as the Mughal Empire weakened, the madrasa fell into decline and eventually closed by the early 1790s. A revival in a changing world In 1792, just as colonial influence began spreading across India, the madrasa found new life. Backed by local nobility, it was re-established as an oriental college, introducing literature, science, and the arts to its curriculum. This revival marked the school's first transformation, from a religious institution to a broader seat of learning. Its location, just outside the city's protective walls, earned it the name "College Bastion", hinting at its role as both a fortress of knowledge and a symbol of Delhi's intellectual resilience. Arrival of the British and reshaping of the school In 1828, the British East India Company stepped in. Driven by the colonial goal of educating a local elite fluent in English, they reorganized the school into what became known as the Anglo Arabic College. One of the key figures behind this transformation was Charles Trevelyan, brother-in-law of Thomas Babington Macaulay, whose infamous education policy would go on to shape India's schooling system for generations. English language and literature were now taught alongside Arabic and Persian: a fusion that reflected the tensions and aspirations of the time. Under the stewardship of Dr. Sprenger, a visionary principal, the college became even more dynamic. He established a printing press, Matba'u 'l-'Ulum, and launched Qiranu 's-Sa'dain, the school's own journal, in 1845, bringing scholarly discourse into print and giving the institution a public intellectual voice. Teachers who stood for more than academics The school has not just been shaped by political forces, it has also been defined by the passion of its teachers. One such name is Rao Shamshad Ali Khan, who joined in 1947, the year India became independent. He would go on to serve the institution until 1975, through a period marked by political upheaval and national transformation. A member of the Muslim League, Rao Shamshad was even arrested during Indira Gandhi's Emergency. It serves as a reminder that education, politics, and activism have always intersected at Anglo Arabic School. The alumni who changed India It's no surprise that a school with such depth of history has produced alumni who went on to shape India and beyond. Among them: Sir Syed Ahmed Khan , who would later found Aligarh Muslim University and become a pioneer of modern Muslim education in India. Muhammad Husain Azad, one of Urdu literature's most celebrated writers. Meem Afzal, a journalist, politician and diplomat. Akhtar ul Iman, a poet who gave Urdu cinema some of its finest screenplays. Mirza Masood, who represented India as a hockey Olympian. A story captured in print To ensure that this remarkable journey is never forgotten, two former administrators chronicled the school's story in a book titled 'The School at Ajmeri Gate: Delhi Educational Legacy', published by Oxford University Press. The book weaves together facts, personal anecdotes, and historical documents to present the school not just as a building, but as a living institution that has survived war, colonialism, Partition, and Emergency. A living legacy Today, under the guidance of Principal Mohd Wasim Ahmad, with Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, as the Chairperson of the Delhi Education Society, the school continues its mission. It serves a co-educational student body and remains government-aided: still accessible, still relevant. While the facade of the school has been renovated over the years, the echoes of its past remain: in the architecture, the traditions, and the generations of students who walk through its gates unaware they're stepping into history. In a world where new schools rise every year with shiny walls and corporate branding, Anglo Arabic School stands out, not because it has the newest tech, but because it has the oldest soul.
