In Flapper Fringe and Bright White, Amal Clooney Rules Euro Summer Style

Vogue4 days ago
Amal Clooney has proven herself to be very much on the more-is-more bandwagon when it comes to vacay dressing.
When it comes to summer dressing, people tend to fall into one of two camps. There's the stripped-back, Ibiza chic capsule that delights in vintage, flip-flops, sheer knits, and barely there triangle bikinis—think Kate Moss and Dakota Johnson. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those who embrace Euro summer style, cramming their Rimowa cases with Pucci prints, kitten heels, OTT jewellery and stacked espadrilles. And while the spirit of the '80s has been permeating many A-list and Vogue editor wardrobes this summer, Clooney is looking a little further into the past.
Photographed on an evening out on Lake Como with her husband George Clooney (at Villa Passalacqua, ahead of an exclusive event organized by their Clooney Foundation for Justice), she took her cues from the 1920s in a flapper-esque, bright white off-the-shoulder dress by Giambattista Valli. Accessorizing with a gold clutch and silvery husband, this Gatsby-on-sea look was another nail in the coffin of quiet luxury, and one to add to your Italian summer moodboard.

Clooney, of course, is no stranger to a statement summer dress. And although the Clooney's Euro summer started a little late than most—George had to wrap up his starring role in Good Night, and Good Luck on Broadway—the human rights lawyer looks to be making the most of her vacay wardrobe. Kicking off their Lake Como trip with a disco-y bang, she's been seen sporting a glittering, one-shoulder knee-length dress (a seemingly favored silhouette for this holiday) from Badgley Mischka, as well as party-ready pieces from Versace, and Stella McCartney shifts previously. But whether she's doing La Dolce Vita style in Italy or summering in a South of France villa, and even back in New York, Clooney keeps her aesthetic consistent: think statement vintage, show-stopping earrings, and pretty, elegant pumps.
Although we may not all be jetting off for an apéro on the shores of Como this August like Amal Clooney, that's no reason not to dress like it.

Italy's Mount Vesuvius, a popular tourist destination, closes over wildfire

Italian firefighters and the army on Sunday tackled a wildfire on the flanks of Mount Vesuvius, with all hiking routes up the volcano near Naples closed to tourists. The national fire service said it had 12 teams on the ground and six Canadair planes fighting the blaze, which has torn through the national park in southern Italy since Friday. The park where a volcanic eruption buried the ancient city of Pompeii in 79 A.D. is a major tourist destination. "The fire-fighting continues ceaselessly on three fronts", the Campania Region said in a statement. Authorities said the fires are largely on the slopes of the Mount Somma side of Vesuvius, which is characterized by its dense vegetation. The army created a fire break and reinforcement firefighters were brought in from other areas of Italy, while onsite teams used drones to better monitor the spread of the fire, the region and fire service said. The smoke from the fire could be seen from the Pompeii archeological site, which was buried by Vesuvius' eruption during Roman times. The site, however, remained open to tourists. The park's head, Raffaele de Luca, said the area affected covered some 500 hectares, or over 1,235 acres. "For safety reasons and to facilitate firefighting and cleanup operations in the affected areas, all activities along the Vesuvius National Park trail network are suspended until further notice," the park said in a statement Saturday. Nearly 620,000 people visited the crater of the active volcano in 2024, according to the park. Experts say European countries are becoming ever more vulnerable to wildfires due to intensifying summer heatwaves linked to global warming. Parts of the continent had recorded its hottest June in recent history. The abnormally hot weather exposed millions of Europeans to high heat stress with temperatures in June more typical of July and August, said Samantha Burgess of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Last week, France battled what authorities called the country's largest wildfire in decades. About 1,400 firefighters were deployed Saturday in France's southern Aude region to prevent it from reigniting, the Associated Press reported. High temperatures in the coming days are expected to complicate firefighters' efforts. On Mount Vesuvius, "the firefighting efforts are particularly delicate due to both the weather conditions -- high temperatures and wind -- and the pine needles, which contribute to the spread of the flames," said Italo Giulivo, head of the region's civil protection department. Italy's biggest agricultural association, Coldiretti, said the fires were "an enormous disaster" for vineyards and farms in an area well known for its wine, apricots and tomatoes. The local prosecutors' office has opened an investigation into the origin of the fires.

George Clooney Says ‘Playing Yourself' Is ‘Hard to Do,' Calls ‘Jay Kelly' Co-Star Adam Sandler ‘Soulful Actor'

Justice for movie stars. We are just a few months shy of when Noah Baumbach's ode to a fictional movie star is released, with one of our starriest film stars at its center playing said fictional movie star — George Clooney — and plenty more playing less famous characters. 'Jay Kelly' will present a modern day Cary Grant (who is even referenced in the teaser trailer) as he struggles to juggle his life as a mega famous actor. As the teaser previews, Jay Kelly is accused of just playing himself — a criticism that has been levied, too, on Clooney, as well as the Netflix movie's co-star Adam Sandler. And Clooney said he doesn't 'give a shit' if people do think that. 'Have you ever tried playing yourself? It's hard to do,' Clooney told Vanity Fair, co-opting a line from 'Jay Kelly.' More from IndieWire Sharon Stone on the Moment Robert De Niro 'Crossed a Line' Filming 'Casino' 'Garbo, by Joan Crawford' - Rare BBC Documentary Resurfaces: Here's How to Watch in the U.S. The 'Ocean's Eleven' star pointed out that, 'There aren't that many guys in my age group that are allowed to do both broad comedies like 'O Brother [Where Art Thou?]' and then do 'Michael Clayton' or 'Syriana.' So if that means I'm playing myself all the time, I don't give a shit.' Clooney also defended Sandler, who he called a 'beautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor.' 'I kept telling the cast, 'Don't call him 'Sand Man.' Don't talk to him like he's just some goofy comedian. He's actually a really beautiful, wonderful actor… Because of what his paycheck is, which is doing big goofy comedies, when he does these other, beautiful, 'Uncut Gems' kinds of movies, it reminds people of that. He's not just a good comedian.' In the movie, Sandler is Jay Kelly's manager Ron. Explaining his role to Vanity Fair, Sandler said, 'My character loves George's character so much, and I thought that would be fun to do and easy to do with George. And as a guy who's an actor who'd live a similar life to Jay Kelly, it's a crazy depiction — how accurate a lot of it is.' The film showcases Jay and Ron going on an 'unexpectedly profound journey through Europe,' or so Netflix's official synopsis reads. This seems to be a journey full of big names. The movie, co-written by Baumbach with actress Emily Mortimer, also features Mortimer with… big breath… Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson, Eve Hewson, Greta Gerwid, Alba Rohurwacher, Josh Hamilton, Lenny Henry, Nicôle Lecky, Thedda Graham, and Isla Fisher. Phew. To compare Jay Kelly to Cary Grant is astute, considering that the legendary Old Hollywood actor — who spent the better part of three decades as a top box office star and continued to be a well-known personality through retirement — was on the record saying, 'Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant. I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until finally I became that person. Or he became me. Or we met at some point.' Grant's persona ended up being, like Clooney's, versatile across a wide variety of genres, from action flicks like 'North by Northwest' and screwball comedies like 'Bringing Up Baby,' to epics like 'The Pride and the Passion' and heartfelt dramas like 'None but the Lonely Heart.' Clooney, similarly, has stretched his charm across every type of film and has even bridged into the theater. Last spring, Clooney was Tony-nominated for his stage adaptation of 'Good Night, and Good Luck.' Netflix will give the movie an awards-qualifying limited release November 14 before releasing it on the streamer December 5. Teaser Trailer For MEGADOC, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Francis Ford Coppola's MEGALOPOLIS — GeekTyrant

The first trailer has arrived for Megadoc , the behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling the creation of Francis Ford Coppola's ambitious and wild sci-fi epic Megalopolis . Directed by Mike Figgis, the doc is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival and has been acquired by indie distributor Utopia. Figgis, best known for Leaving Las Vegas (which earned him Oscar nominations for Best Director and Screenplay), takes audiences deep into Coppola's sprawling creative process. Megadoc captures the risks, setbacks, and sheer audacity of a legendary filmmaker investing $120 million of his own fortune to realize a decades-long vision. The film aims to echo Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse , the raw and revelatory documentary on the making of Apocalypse Now . Through candid footage, rehearsal workshops, and scenes featuring the revolving door of stars who joined and left over the years, Megadoc explores the emotional and financial toll of chasing artistic legacy. It also examines the philosophical weight of Megalopolis itself, a film that draws parallels between the fall of Rome and the turmoil of modern society. As Coppola wraps up a six-city theatrical tour where he screens the film and personally speaks to audiences, his refusal to partner with a streaming platform underscores his intent. He wants Megalopolis experienced in a theater, with its ideas sinking in on a grand scale. Megadoc doesn't just answer how this movie was made. It shows why Coppola felt it had to be.
