National Animal Rights Day: A Powerful Tribute To The Lives Of Animals
Organised by the non-profit organisation Our Planet. Theirs Too., National Animal Rights Day (NARD) aimed to show the public first-hand the results of our society's brutal treatment of animals and to commemorate the billions of animals killed each year for food, their fur and skins, laboratory tests, and entertainment.
A large group of animal rights activists in Christchurch joined thousands globally on Sunday, 1st June, to commemorate the 15th National Animal Rights Day, and the 4th consecutive National Animal Rights Day in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Events were held in over 150 major cities worldwide, including Los Angeles, Berkeley, Anchorage, Phoenix, Denver, Toronto, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Perth, Hong Kong, Manila, New York, and more.
Event coordinator, Sarah Jackson, said, 'The day was an incredibly powerful tribute to all animals who are the victims of human oppression.'
Activists held the deceased bodies of two lambs, retrieved from a meat farm after succumbing to harsh weather last winter, and four ducks that had been shot and left at Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere during this year's duck shooting season, while ceremonial speeches took place.
'We then read the Declaration of Animal Rights and welcomed everyone to sign it,' said Jackson.
Following the ceremony, the event took a lighter turn, as celebrations highlighting the strides humans are making to cease the exploitation of other animals commenced. Key speakers included Tara Jackson, the proud co-founder of Beyond Animal Research (BAR) - a bold new charity uniting scientists, advocates, and changemakers to revolutionise science by eliminating the harmful use of animals.
Julia Grater, the founder and CEO of We.are.tohorā, also spoke. Julia's work encompasses research on marine mammals and the profound connection between human well-being and ocean health.
Performances from local vegans included the University of Canterbury student duo, POLSON and Seymour Stocks, a partnered duo. Both bands delivered songs dedicated to animals for the event.
The deceased animals have now been laid to rest during a funeral-like burial. When considering their moral worth, they will continue to be viewed as equals to humans and treated as such. Defender Pedro Porro paid tribute to his "mentor," saying: "Thank you for everything, boss. For mentoring me early on, helping me settle into the club, and trusting me out on the pitch. "Giving me the opportunity to be part of the leadership group... those moments, and many others, will stay with me forever. You are not only a top manager, you are an incredible person to work for, a real leader, a mentor, and someone I'll always look up to. "What we achieved TOGETHER will stay in the history books. Meghan shares video of family trip to Disneyland for Lili's fourth birthday

Lilly's obesity drug Mounjaro's sales rise 60% in India amid rising demand
Eli Lilly & Co. increased sales of weight-loss and diabetes drug Mounjaro 60 per cent in India in May from April in its second full month of being on offer in the South Asian country, which has the world's third-highest number of obese people. The US drugmaker sold ₹12.6 crore ($1.5 million) worth of the injections last month, according to market analysis firm Pharmarack Technologies. Sales of its 5 mg version more than doubled to about ₹7.5 crore, while revenue from the 2.5 mg shot was ₹5.1 crore. 'The patient number may have actually doubled' in May from April, Pharmarack Vice President Sheetal Sapale told Bloomberg News. The demand is gradually rising and should continue, she said. Newer patients are being introduced with the lower dose and upgraded to 5 mg injections after four weeks, according to Sapale. The increase in sales reflects the need for anti-obesity solutions in the vast market in India, where Danish rival Novo Nordisk A/S is also expected to launch soon. The country's generic drugmakers are awaiting the expiration of some patents from next year to unleash a flurry of copycat treatments. On Tuesday, Biocon Ltd. received approval for Liraglutide, a generic version of Novo Nordisk's type-2 diabetes and anti-obesity drug Victoza. India has about 100 million people living with diabetes and obesity each, Eli Lilly said earlier this year.
