Tamil director Pa Ranjith booked for death of stuntman on movie set
The four people, according to Indian media reports, have been booked under three sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Section 106(1), Section 289, and Section 125. These sections pertain to death by negligence or acts endangering life.
SM Raju, alias Mohan Raj, the stuntman was performing a car-flip manoeuvre over a ramp for Ranjith's film Vettuvam, at a salt pan in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu on July 13. The SUV, according to videos circulating online, somersaulted mid-air and crashed to the ground. Raju, who was critically injured, was later declared brought dead at a local hospital.
Ranjith, the director of hits such as Madras, Sarpatta Parambarai and Kabali, took to social media and condoled Mohan Raj's death. He said that every protocol was followed to make the stunt safe.
"A day that started out with detailed planning, caution, clarity in execution, prayers and all our good will, as it does on every film set that stages crash sequences, ended up in his unexpected death," he wrote. "This has sent us all into shock and heart break."

Woman smuggling cocaine in Oreo worth Dh26.7 million from Doha arrested in Mumbai
An Indian national travelling from Doha to Mumbai has been arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs hidden in boxes of Oreo biscuits. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, seized cocaine worth Dh26.7 million from a woman at the Mumbai International Airport, reports in the Indian media said. The DRI had information that a woman flying from Doha to Mumbai on July 14 would be smuggling narcotics into India. The tip helped DRI Mumbai officers intercept the female passenger upon her arrival at Mumbai Airport on Monday. Six Oreo boxes and three boxes of chocolate were recovered from her baggage. All nine boxes were found to contain capsules filled with a white powdery substance, purported to be cocaine. A total of 300 such capsules were recovered, which were individually tested using the field test kit. All the capsules showed a positive result for cocaine, reports quoting a statement from DRI Mumbai said. A total of 6261 grams of cocaine with an estimated value of Dh26.7 million in the illicit market, was recovered and seized. The passenger was arrested under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The DRI officials are now investigating the source of the contraband, the woman's handler, and other associates. A few days ago, a key suspect in a major Indian narcotic s case was extradited from the UAE to India. Kubbawala Mustafa, wanted by Mumbai Police for his alleged involvement in operating a synthetic drug manufacturing facility, was extradited to India through coordinated efforts between India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol, and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi. Mustafa is facing charges under a 2024 case registered in Mumbai, in which authorities allege he was involved in running a synthetic drug lab in Sangli, Maharashtra. The operation, allegedly run with others, led to the seizure of over 126kg of mephedrone from the facility.

Saudi authorities rescue Indian from Houthi-attacked ship in Red Sea
The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia expressed its gratitude to authorities in the Kingdom for rescuing an Indian national who was aboard the merchant vessel Eternity C, which recently sank in the Red Sea after a hostile attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels. Augustin Dassayan was working as a security guard aboard the ship and he was safely evacuated, thanks to the quick efforts of the Saudi authorities. The mission shared a post on X confirming that Dassayan was safely brought to Jizan, Saudi Arabia, along with other survivors. "A team from the Indian Consulate in Jeddah met him, ensured his well-being, and facilitated his return to India," the Embassy said in the post. "We thank the Saudi authorities @KSAMOFA for their support and assistance in the matter," the mission added. According to Reuters, the Greek operator of the vessel, Cosmoship Management, confirmed that 10 crew members have been rescued so far, while 10 others remain missing. The Eternity C was the second Greek-owned ship to be attacked and sunk by the Iran-backed Houthis last week. The attack is part of the group's continuing attempts to disrupt global shipping through the Red Sea, which is a crucial trade route for oil and other commodities.
