Commemorative shield to make debut
What better way to recognise a fallen totara than by putting his name on a fallen totara.
The Tuppy Diack Shield will make its debut this season.
It is a new competition that bears the name of Otago rugby great Tuppy Diack, who died in Dunedin last month.
It will be played for by Southland Country, Southland Metro, Otago Country and two Dunedin metro teams — a north team made up of Alhambra-Union, University, Harbour, Kaikoria and Taieri and a south team made up of Zingari-Richmond, Southern, Dunedin and Green Island.
It is a straight round-robin that will be attached to the end of the club rugby season.
The opening round is on August 2.
Otago Rugby Football Union game development manager Michael Smith said it was a great shame Mr Diack had died before he got to see the competition in action.
However, Mr Diack had been aware of the concept and was very pleased to put his name to it.
The wood the shield is made from is from a fallen totara tree in the Catlins area and was carved by Patrick Bowden and members of the South Otago Turners Club.

The tree is understood to have been about 1000 years old.
"It's a great bit of wood," Mr Smith said.
"We've put Tuppy's photo on the front of it, and a story about him on the back as well.
"It looks great. It was unfortunate that Tuppy passed away [before he got to see it]."
Mr Smith said the new competition was a way to bridge the gap between club and provincial rugby, as well as offer the players who miss out on representative opportunities something else to aim for.
It was also a good way for players from the country to get noticed.
At the end of the tournament, an Otago B and Southland B team will be selected to play in a triangular tournament that will include a Canterbury team.
Mr Diack was born in Invercargill and went to school in Gore. He played seven games for Southland and 101 games for Otago.
He was the pin-up boy of Otago rugby in the 1950s and early 1960s and played one test for the All Blacks against the British Lions at Athletic Park in 1959.
Mr Diack was a life member of both the Otago University Rugby Club and the Otago Rugby Football Union.

Otago Metro teams secure big wins to remain top of table
The Otago Metro sides both posted comfortable wins in the Tuppy Diack Shield on Saturday to occupy the top two spots on the competition table. Otago Metro South dispatched Otago Country 40-17 at Peter Johnstone Park. They ran in six tries to two. Otago Country lacked physicality at the breakdown. They did mount some strong defence early and opened the scoring with a penalty to Jared Hayes. But Metro South fullback Josh Buchan danced his way through the Country defence to score in the corner. Promising lock Josh Tengblad burrowed his way over from close range to stretch the lead to 14-3. Winger Kyan Rangitutia finished off in the corner following a long build-up, and Metro South scored again before the break to kill off the contest. Buchan ran into a hole and offloaded to halfback Fionn McKenna, who scored under the sticks for a 26-3 lead at halftime. Metro South continued to boss the game and set the tempo. But when Country rolled up their sleeves and went up the middle, they found some success. They finally got some reward when flanker Anton Huisman crossed for a five-pointer. A wonky lineout handed Metro South another opportunity, and midfielder Justin Malifa barged his way through. To Country's credit, they finished with the final points of the match through a try to co-captain Dean Sinnamon, who was too hard to stop from close range. Metro South props Caleb Hughes and Israel Otunuku had busy shifts. Hooker Heath MacEwan was impressive, while the backline was marshalled well by Mackenzie Palmer. Otago Metro North cruised to a 65-28 win over Southland Metro in the other fixture at Peter Johnstone Park. Both Dunedin sides are unbeaten after two games, but Metro South sit at the top of the standings courtesy of superior points difference. Toleafoa to start as Lio-Willie given break
All Black Christian Lio-Willie has been given some time off to unpack his suitcase and get settled in Dunedin again. The powerhouse No 8 made 22 tackles to help Otago beat Southland 24-15 in the NPC opener in Invercargill on Saturday. But the star loose forward has had a busy few months, and coach Mark Brown said Lio-Willie would take some time off and rejoin the team on Monday. "We really appreciate what Christian has done for us," Brown said. "After the All Blacks' campaign [against France] finished, he just jumped in his car and came down for the Southland game. "He has been domiciled up in Christchurch for the Super campaign ... and he has had a big few months, culminating in his All Black appearances and also the Super Rugby final. "He needed a break and now is as good a time as any to give it to him." Southern's Konrad Toleafoa will start at No8 for Otago against Hawke's Bay in Dunedin this Sunday and will be making his debut. The promising loose forward is a devastating ball-carrier and light on his feet. There is one other change to the starting lineup. Jae Broomfield earns promotion from the bench and will start on the right wing ahead of Charlie Powell, who had an underwhelming debut for Otago. "Charlie has done nothing wrong. In fact, he has been really good with his detail. "But it is more the fact that we felt Jae has been offering just a little bit more potency on attack, so for that reason he gets the nod." Lio-Willie rested, Otago strengthen bench
Jake Te Hiwi will return to the Otago bench against Hawke's Bay after recovering from injury. Otago have strengthened their bench ahead of a home game against Hawke's Bay on Sunday. But there is a notable absence as well. All Blacks loose forward Christian Lio-Willie is missing from the NPC team. He carried a heavy load during the 24-15 win over Southland in Invercargill on Saturday and has been given the week off. The powerhouse No 8 will rejoin the team on Monday. Southern's Konrad Toleafoa will start at No 8 and is making his debut. The promising loose forward had a shoulder complaint last season — otherwise, he may have made his debut by now.
