Microsoft reaffirms commitment to M'sia amid global data centre pullbacks

PETALING JAYA : Microsoft has reaffirmed its commitment to a RM10.5 billion investment in cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Malaysia, including the development of hyperscale data centres in the Klang Valley.
A spokesperson for Microsoft Malaysia told FMT the tech giant is closely monitoring the ongoing uncertainty following US President Donald Trump's announcement of sweeping tariffs in April, which unsettled stock and currency markets before a 90-day pause was declared a week later.
'Microsoft remains committed to our investment in Malaysia to accelerate the nation's AI and cloud adoption. As a company, the tariff is something we are watching, but we don't have anything to share right now,' it said.
Citing people familiar with the situation, Bloomberg reported in April that Microsoft had either halted talks for, or delayed the development of, data centre projects in Indonesia, the UK and Australia, as well as Illinois, North Dakota and Wisconsin in the US.
Microsoft acknowledged making changes to its data centre plans at the time, saying the move reflected the flexibility of the company's strategy and aligned with its goal of ensuring it has 'sufficient infrastructure in the right places'.
Last month, Microsoft announced the general availability of the Malaysia West cloud region in Greater Kuala Lumpur comprising three availability zones aimed at offering low-latency connections and a highly resilient infrastructure, including Azure and Microsoft 365.
Additionally, Microsoft Malaysia managing director Laurence Si previously said the company is also investing in talent development through its 'AI for Malaysia's Future' (AIForMYFuture) initiative, which aims to equip 800,000 Malaysians with AI skills by the end of 2025.
In an interview with FMT, Microsoft Malaysia's legal and government affairs director Adilah Junid revealed that, as of May, more than 400,000 Malaysians have received AI training under the initiative.
She also encouraged participation in the free AIForMYFuture initiative via Microsoft's AI Skills Navigator website, and the monthly Microsoft AI Teach programmes held nationwide at local educational institutions and National Information Dissemination Centres.
'Microsoft relies heavily on local partners such as Biji-Biji, HRD Corp, Perkeso, Pepper Labs, and the International Women's Federation of Commerce and Industry Malaysia.
'They are really the ones to have networks within the community and society, enabling us to make this opportunity as widely accessible as possible,' said Adilah.
Addressing concerns about sustainability, particularly the high water usage of data centres for cooling, she said Microsoft is constantly exploring innovative solutions to operate more sustainably.
'We were part of the consultations with the digital ministry's guidelines for sustainable data centres. We also work with authorities to ensure that our water and energy usage metrics are aligned,' said Adilah.

Civil servants to receive one-off payouts for self-funded higher studies, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government has approved a one-off financial award for civil servants who pursue and obtain higher recognised academic qualifications at their own expense while in service. He said the incentives would benefit more than 91,672 public servants. 'The government has agreed to provide the Academic Recognition Award as a form of financial incentive to officers who begin and complete their studies, and attain higher recognised academic qualifications while in service, using their own funds. 'For this purpose, the government has allocated RM75.7 million, which will benefit 91,672 civil servants across all service schemes,' he said during his speech at the 20th Civil Service Premier Assembly (MAPPA XX) today. He added that recipients will receive RM1,250 for a doctoral degree, RM1,000 for a master's degree, RM750 for a bachelor's degree, and RM500 for a diploma or equivalent qualification. Ringgit holds firm amid narrow trading range and US inflation surprises

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — The ringgit closed the week stronger against the US dollar amid the greenback's continued weakness as the higher-than-expected US Producer Price Index (PPI) for July failed to provide lasting support for the currency. At 6 pm, the local note rose marginally to 4.2085/2155 from Thursday's close of 4.2090/2145. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit traded within a narrow range today -- between RM4.2162 and RM4.2225 -- while the US Dollar Index slipped 0.36 per cent to 97.900 points as the hotter-than-expected PPI failed to lift the US dollar on a sustained basis. He said Malaysia's gross domestic product print held at 4.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2025 with domestic demand remaining the primary driver, while the contraction in net exports suggests that the downside to overall growth mostly emanated from the external sector. 'The downside risks to growth have become elevated due to the uncertainties over external development,' he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit settled mostly higher against major currencies. It strengthened versus the Japanese yen to 2.8653/8702 from Thursday's close of 2.8703/8742 and gained against the British pound to 5.7050/7145 from 5.7146/7220, but eased vis-a-vis the euro to 4.9185/9267 from 4.9170/9234. The ringgit traded higher against regional peers. It appreciated versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2820/2877 from 3.2849/2895 at yesterday's close and rose against the Thai baht to 12.9760/13.0032 from 13.0004/0238. The local currency also firmed against the Philippine peso to 7.37/7.39 from 7.39/7.41 previously and increased against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.2/260.8 from 261.1/261.6. — Bernama
