Boston sports radio host left stunned at 'preposterous' reason Red Sox manager Alex Cora missed a game

Daily Mail22-05-2025

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora missed Monday's victory over the visiting New York Mets to attend his daughter Camila's graduation at Boston College, which one local sports radio host considered a 'kind of preposterous' excuse.
'They were, I believe, done by noon, which means you can have a nice big party in the middle of the day,' Mike Felger of Boston's 98.5 The Sports Hub said. 'Just cab down the street and manage the game.'
A schedule of events on BC's website appears to contradict Felger's claim. While the academic procession was set to start at 9:05am at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, individual school diplomas were not distributed until the main ceremony, which was scheduled to begin sometime between 12pm and 12:30.
But Felger's criticism had less to do with Monday's game, which Boston won with bench coach Ramón Vázquez at the helm. Rather, he claimed it set a bad example to players.
'It's just the tone you set and the example you set for the team,' Felger said. 'It's not like they need him there to make the pitching change or lay down the bunt. It's the leadership and optics of the whole thing. It's a very easy chance for him to say, 'Nothing's more important than tonight's game.'
Speaking before Tuesday's win over the Mets, Cora did not seem bothered by Fleger's criticism in the least.
'She wanted me to be with her,' Cora said. 'It was her day so this was secondary. We're in this world for a purpose, and for me, it's to raise her and try to do the best we can.
'Obviously, it wasn't perfect but right now, it's perfect. Everybody contributed. For her, she was very anxious having the whole family in town. Like we told her, anything for her. To be able to listen to her, how she thought about the whole day, the whole week and the whole four-year experience, there was a lot of emotions.
'It's a day,' he added. 'I wasn't going to miss it. The whole day. There's coaches that take three days for that. It just so happened we're here in Boston so I took one.'
Team reporters knew about Cora's decision ahead of time after the manager recently discussed his excitement to see Camila graduate. Cora went on to comment on his daughter's growth since 2018, when she celebrated the team's World Series win with her father at the end of his first season on the job.
'It went fast, it went really fast,' Cora said. 'For a girl from divorced parents, her mom did an amazing job, staying the course while I was playing and coaching and doing my ESPN thing. ... She's actually a reflection of her. I appreciate everything she's done for her and for us.'
'Now, she's not a little girl,' he said. 'She's a woman. She had fun with it. She's a great student and the future's bright for her.'

USGA chief insists the 'juice is not worth the squeeze' of changing equipment testing despite Rory McIlroy driver debacle

The Rory McIlroy driver debacle will not lead to a change in equipment testing, according to the United States Golf Association. The USGA, which carries out the pre-tournament checks, had faced calls from Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele to overhaul their procedures last month. Scheffler and McIlroy were both forced to change a non-conforming driver in the build up to the championship, after each was found to have become too springy, and the world No 1 went on to argue against the current method of randomly selecting only a third of each field for testing. Scheffler's view was that the entire field should have their equipment checked if the measure was to be considered fair. However, USGA chief Mike Whan, whose organisation is running this week's US Open, has dismissed that possibility, saying that the nature of any advantage and the prevalence of failures were both too small to justify. 'With what we're seeing today, it would be a greater interruption,' Whan said. 'The juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze.' He added: 'If I'm being honest with you, I think in terms of what happened at the PGA Championship, it made us more committed to not wanting to have this be the topic of the town because I think when you talked about a rules violation or somebody who's playing with a hot driver, that gets so much more sensational than the reality. 'I can tell you as a rules body, if we had concern about this incredible advantage, we would change the degree in which we test. 'But we think the testing that we're doing now is commensurate with the size of both the issue and the size of the reality of the issue. 'I know we tested this week. I couldn't tell you if we had failures, and if so, what those failures were at the time. 'I know that if we saw a trend that was alarming in terms of either how many or how far they were moving beyond (the permissible limit), we would change the way we approach it.'

Angel Reese's ex-teammate Flau'jae Johnson opens up on rift with WNBA star as she claims they're no longer friends

LSU basketball star Flau'jae Johnson has revealed she is no longer friends with former teammate Angel Reese because of a 'locker room' dispute between the pair. Johnson and Reese formed a successful partnership on the court together at LSU, which helped the school win a national championship in 2023, before the latter left college and moved up to the WNBA a year later. At the end of her rookie season in the big leagues, the Chicago Sky forward admitted she is no longer as close with her old Tigers teammate despite there being 'no hard feelings between them.' 'I still support Flau'jae. We aren't as close as we used to be,' Reese said on her Unapologetically Angel podcast. 'There's no hard feelings or anything. 'It happens,' she continued. 'You don't have the best relationships with everybody, and don't always continue relationships with people. So I wish her the best always, I'm always going to support her. There's no love lost but we aren't as close as we used to be.' Yet nine months on from that claim, Johnson has suggested their lack of closeness these days is actually due to something that played out behind the scenes at LSU. 'We're not friends, but I mean that bond that we had, that thing that we did together, winning a national championship, you can never take that away from us,' she said on The Breakfast Club. 'And so sometimes stuff happens, you wish it don't happen but it do. And you just gotta grow.' When asked specifically what happened, the 21-year-old continued: 'Yeah, it was a lot of media, it was a lot of locker room stuff. You know what I'm saying? Stuff that go on behind the scenes. 'But it happens. It happens… Sometimes stuff happens. You wish it don't happen, but it do.' Back in 2023, Reese's mother, Angel Webb Reese, and Johnson's mother, Kia Brooks, seemed to feud on social media after the former was briefly removed from LSU's lineup. Webb first posted on Instagram: 'Folks pls do not send me long text msgs with a bunch of grammatical errors it gives me a headache, how do I know you said what you said if I can't understand what you're saying?' Brooks seemed to take that message as a shot at her, before going on the offensive against Webb and her daughter. 'You definitely know about grammar errors when your daughter got a 2.0 or less GPA, and in fact when writing your smart message you didn't capitalize nor did you use any periods,' she said. 'Stop being petty, fake and hateful. And take responsibility for you and your daughters actions. Your just as responsible you raised her that way. Nobody give a damn who you think you are since you came up off another's brand. Just like God gave it to you he will take right away. Always stay humble and never forget who made you and where you came from!!' Reese then continued to stoke the fire after graduating from LSU the following year. 'So now what? what was said? oh okay that's what i thought. I graduated from THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY IN 4 YEARS ON TIME. I thought somebody without a college degree said sum,' she wrote on X. She also shared a message from her mother on social media, in which Webb said she had a college degree and railed against 'folks who... have not sniffed a GPA since high school,' in an apparent reference to Brooks.

FIFA World Cup to be guarded by ICE and DHS agents as fans are warned to expect ‘suited and booted' security

FIFA Club World Cup will be guarded by 'suited and booted' ICE and DHS agents, officials have warned. The mammoth event's opening ceremony takes place at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday. 4 4 4 The countdown is officially on until the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off, with a curtain-raiser between Inter Miami and a team from Egypt, Al Ahly. The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will provide security at the game. On its Facebook account, CBP posted last week: 'Let the games begin. "The first #FIFAClubWorldCup games start on June 14th in Miami, FL at the Hard Rock Stadium. "CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games. #CBPxFIFA #FootballUnitesTheWorld.' The post has since been deleted. However, NBC said the post had prompted questions about whether the presence of federal agents was "just part of the overall security team, which is normal for a big event?" This follows demonstrations nationwide, including Dallas and Austin in Texas, and Chicago and New York, after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. It also comes as Donald Trump continues his huge immigration crackdown and travel ban. And Vice President JD Vance last month warned World Cup travellers not to overstay their welcome. The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will see the World's best players decide which club is the greatest The broadcaster said it was not clear whether the agents will also be checking papers and detaining fans arriving for the game. FIFA today held a press conference to publicise the Club World Cup - the winning side of which will earn up to $125 million. NBC noted, "It's obvious that Fifa would rather focus on the games instead of outside issues." FIFA president Gianni Infantino urged fans to buy tickets despite concerns about the presence of federal agents. He told fans, 'Be part of history, football is such an important sport all over the world. we'll have billions of people watching this from home who would love to come and attend.' BOOSTING SECURITY Infantino was asked whether he had any concerns about ICE and border officials being present at the games. He replied, 'No I don't have any concerns on anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security questions. "Most important for us is to guarantee security for our fans who will come to the games, this is our priority.' The station stressed that it is normal for local police to partner with federal counterparts and law enforcement agents to provide security at big events. The broadcaster said it had spoken to ICE agents - who had confirmed its officials will be at the games - to provide security. NBC - citing ICE advice - told viewers intending on attending games that all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status. This is particularly vital after the debacle last year, when 7,000 unticketed supporters broke into the Copa America final. Some fans climbed over fences, while others were incredibly seen trying to enter via a ventilation system at the Hard Rock Stadium. More on the Club World Cup 2025 The Club World Cup 2025 will begin on Sunday, June 15, in the UK and Saturday, June 14, in the US. The tournament will run until Sunday, July 13. It is being held across 12 different cities and stadiums in the United States. The whole tournament will be broadcast by DAZN in the UK and US. Matches can be watched on DAZN TV or via the website/app. In the UK, Channel 5 will also air select games on terrestrial TV. But, Thomas Kennedy of the Florida Immigrant Coalition said the federal agents' now-deleted social media warning had caused confusion. He said, 'The messaging that CBP is using is a bit cryptic. "It's sort of alluding that people should have their paperwork in order to attend the games. 'It creates an environment where people are less likely to come watch the games because of just sheer intimidation.' When asked about the security arrangement, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, 'We're here to make sure people are safe, that's our focus, to work with all of the law enforcement personnel, our safety personnel, and make sure they have a seamless experience." 4
