Boston sports radio host left stunned at 'preposterous' reason Red Sox manager Alex Cora missed a game
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora missed Monday's victory over the visiting New York Mets to attend his daughter Camila's graduation at Boston College, which one local sports radio host considered a 'kind of preposterous' excuse. 'They were, I believe, done by noon, which means you can have a nice big party in the middle of the day,' Mike Felger of Boston's 98.5 The Sports Hub said. 'Just cab down the street and manage the game.' A schedule of events on BC's website appears to contradict Felger's claim. While the academic procession was set to start at 9:05am at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, individual school diplomas were not distributed until the main ceremony, which was scheduled to begin sometime between 12pm and 12:30. But Felger's criticism had less to do with Monday's game, which Boston won with bench coach Ramón Vázquez at the helm. Rather, he claimed it set a bad example to players. 'It's just the tone you set and the example you set for the team,' Felger said. 'It's not like they need him there to make the pitching change or lay down the bunt. It's the leadership and optics of the whole thing. It's a very easy chance for him to say, 'Nothing's more important than tonight's game.' Speaking before Tuesday's win over the Mets, Cora did not seem bothered by Fleger's criticism in the least. 'She wanted me to be with her,' Cora said. 'It was her day so this was secondary. We're in this world for a purpose, and for me, it's to raise her and try to do the best we can. 'Obviously, it wasn't perfect but right now, it's perfect. Everybody contributed. For her, she was very anxious having the whole family in town. Like we told her, anything for her. To be able to listen to her, how she thought about the whole day, the whole week and the whole four-year experience, there was a lot of emotions. 'It's a day,' he added. 'I wasn't going to miss it. The whole day. There's coaches that take three days for that. It just so happened we're here in Boston so I took one.' Team reporters knew about Cora's decision ahead of time after the manager recently discussed his excitement to see Camila graduate. Cora went on to comment on his daughter's growth since 2018, when she celebrated the team's World Series win with her father at the end of his first season on the job. 'It went fast, it went really fast,' Cora said. 'For a girl from divorced parents, her mom did an amazing job, staying the course while I was playing and coaching and doing my ESPN thing. ... She's actually a reflection of her. I appreciate everything she's done for her and for us.' 'Now, she's not a little girl,' he said. 'She's a woman. She had fun with it. She's a great student and the future's bright for her.'

Alex Cora missing Monday night's Red Sox-Mets game for daughter's graduation
Red Sox manager Alex Cora is taking a night off Monday, but for a very good reason. The Boston skipper will miss Monday's Red Sox-Mets showdown at Fenway Park to celebrate his daughter's college graduation. Cora will miss the first of a three-game set against the Mets as he celebrates his daughter, Camila, and her graduation from Boston College. Boston bench coach Ramón Vázquez will step in for Cora on Monday night. Cora said Sunday that his daughter's graduation is an occasion he wouldn't miss for anything. "It went fast, it went really fast," Cora said ahead of Sunday's loss to the Atlanta Braves. "For a girl from divorced parents, her mom did an amazing job staying the course, and while I was playing and coaching and doing my ESPN thing. Nilda was amazing with her. She's actually a reflection of her. I appreciate everything that she's done for her and for us, obviously. "Obviously our lives changed throughout, and [my partner] Angelica has become like a mentor to her, too, and they're very close, and the fact that we were here while she was going through college, it meant a lot," Cora continued. "And it's going to be a very special day. One that I'm not going to miss. And I 100 percent will miss the game for that, and I'll do that any given day, because it's going to be a special day for us together." Camila has by Cora's side quite a bit since he took over as Red Sox manager in 2018. He recalled going back and watching her next to him on the duck boats as the team celebrated its 2018 World Series title with a parade through Boston, and then again when she was on the field after the team made it to the ALCS in 2021. "She was still a little girl. Now she's not a little girl, she's a woman," Cora said of his daughter. Cora said he's proud of how great of a student Camilla was during her time at Boston College, and sees has a bright future ahead. Camila Cora is now heading to her dad's alma mater, the University of Miami, for graduate school. "I think she's ready for the 85-degree weather all year round," joked Cora. Red Sox 2025 season Boston is scuffling heading into its series with the NL East-leading Mets, having lost two of three against the Atlanta Braves over the weekend and five of its last six games. The Red Sox currently sit at 23-25 on the season, which has them five games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East and three games out of a Wild Card spot in the American League.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora to miss Monday's game vs. Mets to attend daughter's college graduation
The Boston Red Sox will be without manager Alex Cora on Monday, though he's got a pretty good reason for his absence. Instead of being with the Red Sox for their series opener against the New York Mets at Fenway Park, Cora will attend his daughter Camila's college graduation ceremony at Boston College. And, rightfully so, Cora has absolutely no regrets about his decision. 'It's going to be a very special day, one that I'm not going to miss,' Cora said before the team's 10-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, via The Associated Press . 'I 100% will miss the game for that. I will do that any given day. It's going to be a very special day for us.' Advertisement Cora is in his seventh season as the Red Sox's manager this summer. He holds a 544-475 overall record, and he helped lead the team to their World Series title in 2018. The franchise had made the playoffs just once since then. The Red Sox dropped to 23-25 with their loss on Sunday, which marked their fifth loss in six games. Boston will host the Mets for three games starting on Monday, then they will host the Baltimore Orioles for a four-game series starting on Thursday. Cora will be back in the dugout on Tuesday.
