Michigan's flags are at half staff today. Here's why they've been lowered

Yahoo02-05-2025

U.S. flags are half staff today in Michigan to honor a U.S. Army staff sergeant from Battle Creek who was killed during a training accident in Lithuania, along with three other soldiers.
'(Staff Sgt. Troy) Knutson-Collins represented the best of Michigan as he served our nation in uniform,' Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said. 'A fierce friend and proud son, he leaves behind a legacy we should all strive to live up to. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow soldiers.'
Knutson-Collins, Jose Duenez Jr., 25, of Joliet, Illinois, and Edvin Franco, 25 of Glendale, California, all were posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. Pfc. Dante D. Taitano, 21, of Dededo, Guam, also died in the training.
Here's what to know.
The soldiers' M88A2 Hercules was reported missing March 25 while conducting a mission to repair and tow an immobilized tactical vehicle in support of regularly scheduled training at Pabradė, Lithuania.
Three soldiers and the vehicle were found in a peat bog by U.S., Polish and Lithuanian armed forces on March 31. The Army said the fourth soldier was recovered later.
Knutson-Collins joined the Army in 2018, the release said.
Knutson-Collins was an artillery mechanic with more than seven years in the Army. He arrived at Fort Stewart, Georgia, in February 2018 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment.
Knutson-Collins graduated from the Army Basic Leader Course, the Advanced Leaders Course, the Tracked Vehicle Recovery Operations course, and the Combat Lifesaver course, according to the Army. He deployed to Korea in 2020.
Knutson-Collins' awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Master Technician Badge.
A full obituary is available online.
Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff, the governor said in a news release.
Flags should be returned to full staff on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
Flagpoles on the ground or buildings are called staffs. Flags lowered on shore are called half-staff, according to Americanflags.com.
Half-mast refers to flags lowered on a ship, while flagpoles are called staffs.
Certain holidays and events when flags are flown at half-staff in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs website are:
Memorial Day, when the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.
Peace Officers Memorial Day, unless that day is also Armed Forces Day.
Patriot Day.
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
National Firefighters Memorial Day.

Travis Decker manhunt: Latest on the search for suspect in 3 girls' deaths

Travis Decker manhunt: Latest on the search for suspect in 3 girls' deaths Show Caption Hide Caption New footage of Travis Decker released amid manhunt Travis Decker is wanted on first-degree murder charges in connection with deaths of his three daughters. Nearly four days after officials found the bodies of three young sisters at a remote Washington state campground, allegedly slain by their own father, federal law enforcement officials say they are investigating hundreds of leads and tips as they search for 32-year-old Travis Decker. The manhunt for Decker continued on Friday, June 6, a Chelan County Sheriff's Office spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY, four days after the girls' bodies were found and a week after they were first reported missing. Officials shut down a large swath of a national forest in Washington while law enforcement continues to search the area for the girls' father, who is the case's sole suspect so far. The order to close a hefty portion of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest went into effect on June 5 and is slated to last through June 18, the sheriff's office, the lead agency in the case, announced June 5 in a news release. The man is wanted connection to the deaths of his daughters, Paityn Decker, 9; Evelyn Decker, 8; and Olivia Decker, 5. An outdoorsman, Travis Decker attended mountain survival school and served in the U.S. Army, officials said. He is suspected of killing his daughters after taking them for a scheduled custody visitation. Travis Decker manhunt: New video released in search for man suspected of killing his 3 daughters Following a dayslong search, official found the sisters dead on Monday, June 2 after their mother reported them missing on Friday, May 30. Authorities in Wenatchee, located in central Washington, said Travis Decker took the children for a scheduled custody visit and failed to return them to their mother on time. The parents were divorced, and Travis Decker was homeless and staying primarily in his truck. A search turned up Travis Decker's white 2017 GMC Sierra truck near a campground, and the sisters were found dead nearby. Their father was nowhere to be found. Local, state and federal officials continue to search for Travis, wanted on charges of kidnapping, first-degree murder and custodial interference. Who is Travis Decker? Police search for father suspected of killing his 3 daughters Where are authorities searching for Travis Decker? Dan Ozment, undersheriff with the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, did not elaborate on exactly where law enforcement is looking, but warned those who own cabins or live in remote areas of Chelan, Kittitas King, Snohomish, and Okanagan counties to be on high alert as Decker was still at large. "As law enforcement conducts their searches, we are asking for those owners to lock all of their doors," Ozment wrote in the statement, encouraging residents to leave window blinds open and outside lights on. 'Grieving the unimaginable' Since the tragedy, the Wenatchee Valley community and beyond have rallied behind the girls' mother, Whitney Decker. A GoFundMe page has raised more than $1 million in financial support for Whitney as of June 6. "We ask for grace at this time. Whitney is grieving the unimaginable," said family friend Amy Edwards, who organized the GoFundMe page, at a news conference June 5. "When one mother cries, we all cry and hold her in our heart. Thank you for holding Whitney in your hearts now." How did the Decker sisters die? The three girls likely died of asphyxiation, court filings reveal. "Their wrists were also zipped tied or showed signs of being zip tied," according to the affidavit, and each girl was found with a plastic bag over her head. Travis Decker had exhibited mental health issues prior to the girls' deaths, the court filings show. New photos, video released of Travis Decker Authorities this week released photos and videos of the suspect and are asking for the public's help as the manhunt continues. Travis Decker description Police described Travis Decker as a white man with black hair and brown eyes, standing 5'8'', and weighing 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and dark shorts. Authorities said Decker may have scoped out a hiding location before venturing into the wilderness. Investigators learned from Decker's father he is well-versed in outdoor survival, a skill that may have assisted his efforts to avoid detection, Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison said at a June 4 news conference. In addition to being an outdoorsman, Decker attended mountain survival school and served in the U.S. Army. 'Horrendous': Lawyer details conditions faced by 11th grader detained by ICE Who were Olivia, Evelyn and Paityn Decker? The daughters of Travis Decker and his ex-wife Whitney Decker − Olivia, Evelyn, and Paityn Decker − lived in the Wenatchee Valley prior to their killings. In addition to playing sports and attending school in the city of Wenatchee, the three girls were involved in the local art scene through performance and dance. They performed at the Music Theatre of Wenatchee through a children's program known as "Short Shakespeareans" and practiced dance at the city's Fabulous Feet Dance Studio. The Music Theatre of Wenatchee held a candlelight vigil on June 3 at Wenatchee's Memorial Park. Anyone who knows Deckers whereabouts is asked to call 911. If you see him, do not approach him, officials warned. Soldiers on alert over ‘Lee Rigby-style' threat to behead paratrooper

Military staff at an Army base have been put on alert over a 'Lee Rigby-style' threat to behead a paratrooper. Security has been tightened at the Colchester garrison, where Parachute Regiment battalions are located, after online threats were intercepted by Nottinghamshire police. All military staff at the base have been warned not to wear any uniforms or clothing outside the camp which would identify them as military personnel. The families of service members have also been sent warnings. Police are investigating the online threats, which come 12 years after the beheading of Fusilier Lee Rigby stunned Britain. Fusilier Rigby was murdered by Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale on May 22 2013, outside the Royal Artillery barracks in Woolwich, south London, after he was seen wearing a Help for Heroes hoodie, which was popular with troops. The alert sent to families and service personnel at Colchester Garrison, where 3,500 troops and 750 civilian workers are based, says: 'Urgent. All, please disseminate to all your people in camp. 'We have received a warning that a man has made threats against members of the Para Regt and wants to carry out a 'Lee Rigby' style attack. 'The SCC [Security Control Centre] and main gate have been informed but ensure no Para Regt/military clothing is worn outside camp and remain vigilant.' The messages specifically named the suspect and stated other identifying details. It is not known whether he has yet been apprehended. The Ministry of Defence said: 'The safety and wellbeing of our personnel is our top priority. We are aware of an online threat, which is being investigated by the civilian police. 'Personnel are always advised to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the Royal Military Police.' Colchester's military history dates back to the late 18th century when the first barracks were built in the city. The garrison is the home of 16 Air Assault Brigade and troops from the Parachute Regiment's second and third battalions, alongside other infantry and aviation units and supporting detachments such as logistics and medical personnel. Airborne forces are notorious for wearing regimental clothing outside working hours, particularly distinctive maroon-coloured T-shirts and fleeces, most often worn with tight jeans and desert boots, a tradition that goes back many decades. Fusilier Rigby was a father of one from Middleton, Greater Manchester, and had served in Afghanistan. At the time of his death, he was working in army recruitment. He was a trained machine-gunner and a regimental drummer. He was given a military funeral at Bury parish church on July 12 2013. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
