Jannik Sinner avenges French Open loss to win Wimbledon final
Sinner beat Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court to win Wimbledon for the first time and avenge his agonising five-set defeat to the Spaniard in the Roland Garros showpiece in June.
The world number one blew a two-set lead and wasted three championship points in an epic collapse in Paris, but he held his nerve in the rematch at the All England Club.
'I would say mostly emotionally because I had a very tough loss in Paris. But it doesn't matter how you win or lose, you just have to understand what you did wrong and try to work on it,' the 23-year-old said.
'This is what we did. This is one of the reasons I'm here holding this trophy.'
Sinner is the first Italian man to win Wimbledon, ending Alcaraz's two-year reign as champion.
'It's so special. We were talking before the match. We would never have thought of being in this position back in the days when I was young,' said the four-time Grand Slam winner.
'It was just a dream. This was so far away from where I am from.'
Alcaraz had no complaints about the end of his 24-match winning streak, a blistering run that brought him titles at the French Open, Rome, Monte Carlo and Queen's Club.
'It's difficult to lose but first of all I have to congratulate Jannik. It is a really well deserved trophy. He was playing great tennis,' the world number two said.
'Really happy to be able to build a really good relationship with him off the court and a great rivalry on the court.'
Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam champion, was beaten in a major final for the first time, but he had no regrets after falling short of a third successive Wimbledon crown.
'Really proud of everything I'm doing. At the beginning of the season I struggled a bit and then suddenly I started to bring joy to the court again,' he said.
'Wimbledon is one of the most beautiful tournaments that we have on tour. I feel at home every time that I come here.
'It is such a beautiful court. The atmosphere is insane. It's a great journey so far. I just want to keep it going.' - AFP

Soccer-Real sign their former youth player Carreras from Benfica
Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Group C - Boca Juniors v Benfica - Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida, U.S. - June 16, 2025 Benfica's Alvaro Fernandez Carreras reacts REUTERS/Hannah Mckay/File Photo (Reuters) -Real Madrid have signed defender Alvaro Carreras from Benfica, the LaLiga club said on Monday, marking a return to the Spanish side for the 22-year-old after he previously spent three years at Real's academy. The Spanish left back, who played at the recent Club World Cup, has signed a six-year contract, for a reported fee of 50 million euros ($58.31 million), according to Spanish media. He becomes Real's third defensive signing during the close season, after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, as they look to strengthen a department which has suffered several injuries in recent seasons. Carreras left Real for Manchester United in 2020, mainly appearing with their Under-23 side, and while the Spaniard did receive call-ups to the senior squad he never made a senior appearance at the Premier League club. He had loan spells at Preston North End and Granada, before another loan move brought Carreras to Benfica in January 2024, making his debut for the Portuguese club one week later. Carreras made 11 league appearances for Benfica in those first few months in Portugal, and the club signed him on a permanent deal from United at the end of the season. Soccer-Disability rights group slams Yamal's birthday bash for using people with dwarfism
MADRID (Reuters) -A Spanish disability rights group has vowed legal action over the reported hiring of people with dwarfism as entertainment at Barcelona soccer star Lamine Yamal's recent 18th birthday party, condemning the practice as discriminatory. The young winger, who helped Spain clinch the European Championship last year, celebrated his coming of age on Saturday with a star-studded jamboree that included celebrity guests from the music industry such as Bizarrap, Bad Gyal or Quevedo, as well as many of his Barca teammates and social media influencers. The Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE) said in a statement that the use of people with dwarfism as spectacle at Yamal's party perpetuated stereotypes, fuelled discrimination and undermined the dignity and rights of people with disabilities. It cited Spain's disability rights law, which prohibits shows or recreational activities that use people with disabilities in a way that provokes ridicule or undermines their dignity. "It's unacceptable that in the 21st century, people with dwarfism are still used for entertainment at private parties, particularly when public figures are involved," said ADEE President Carolina Puente. "The dignity and rights of our community cannot be a source of amusement under any circumstance." Yamal's representatives did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Yamal posted on Monday a one-minute video edit with highlights from the party on his Instagram account that featured fellow Barca players Gavi and Robert Lewandowski playing poker and roulette, though it did not appear to show people with achondroplasia, the genetic disorder causing dwarfism. The Spaniard - who won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercup with Barca this season - wore a white suit with a red rose in his lapel, lavish jewellery and a cane, in keeping with the party's "Italian gangster" theme. West Indies fightback as Australia stumble to 99-6 in pink-ball Test
WEST Indies staged a spirited fightback on day two of the pink-ball Test against Australia, restricting the visitors to 99 for six in their second innings at Sabina Park. The hosts trail by 181 runs but remain in contention after a disciplined bowling performance under floodlights. Alzarri Joseph claimed three crucial wickets, including Steve Smith for five, while Shamar Joseph added two more to his series tally, taking his total to 20 dismissals. Australia's Cameron Green stood firm with an unbeaten 42, offering resistance alongside captain Pat Cummins (5 not out) as the match hangs in the balance. Shamar Joseph struck early, removing openers Sam Konstas for a duck and Usman Khawaja for 14. Alzarri Joseph then dismantled the middle order, dismissing Beau Webster (13) and Alex Carey (0) in quick succession. 'We were looking for seven wickets tonight and got six, so we'll take that,' said Shamar Joseph. 'West Indies have always had that great legacy of fast bowling, and this generation wants to continue that tradition.' Earlier, West Indies collapsed to 143 all out in their first innings, losing their last seven wickets for just 61 runs. Scott Boland led Australia's attack with 3-34, supported by Josh Hazlewood and Cummins, who took two wickets each. Poor shot selection and a needless runout of Justin Greaves compounded the hosts' struggles. Australia, aiming for a series sweep after victories in Barbados and Grenada, will look to extend their lead beyond 200 on day three. - AFP
