Kanpur: Police are zeroing in on the six robbers involved in a robbery that took place in the Maharajpur town area of Kanpur on Monday evening. Six assailants on two motorcycles looted jewellery and cash worth approximately Rs 3.40 lakh from a jeweller.
The police formed multiple teams and are searching for the suspects.
Anil Verma, owner of a jewellery shop at the Maharajpur Tauns intersection and resident of Shaktipuram, Chakeri, was heading home on his scooter after shutting his shop. Near Ghatkheda on the Tauns-Tilshari road, six youths on two motorcycles intercepted him. A white Apache motorcycle struck his scooter and knocked him down. The riders assaulted him and took his mobile phone and scooter.
One perpetrator rode his scooter while another sat as a pillion, and escaped towards Tauns.
The scooter's storage compartment contained gold and silver ornaments valued at about Rs 3.5 lakh, Rs 40,000 in cash, and shop keys.
Anil suffered injuries on his hands and head during the assault and underwent a police medical examination. The crime branch and forensics team visited the location to gather evidence. The jeweller's blue scooter was equipped with a password-protected GPS system. Using this system, police recovered the vehicle from Narval turn, though the storage compartment was damaged and the bag was missing.
Deputy commissioner of police (East), Satyajeet Gupta, said six teams are investigating the case. "Footage is being reviewed, and the mobile phone has been put under surveillance. We have leads and expect an early breakthrough."

Chargesheet filed in Sivaganga custodial death case, CBI informs Madras HC

A bench comprising justices S M Subramaniam and G Arul Murugan appreciated the CBI for its swift action and directed it to file a status report on 24 September on further progress in the case. Noting that the agency is yet to receive the files relating to the connected jewel theft case, during the inquiry of which Ajithkumar was subjected to custodial torture, the Bench directed the state police to hand over the case files to the CBI within a week, with further directions to the CBI to register an FIR and probe the case expeditiously. During the hearing, Additional Advocate General M Ajmal Khan informed the court that the additional compensation of Rs 25 lakh, which was directed to be paid to the victim's family, had been disbursed and that witness protection had been extended to five witnesses in the case based on a direction from the Sivagangai district court. However, one of the petitioners' counsel told the court that the direction of the district court had not been implemented in entirety and that the witnesses still lacked some protection, such as fencing. He also highlighted the absence of a vulnerable witness deposition centre in Madurai. The Bench directed the Thirupuvanam police inspector to verify whether the order regarding witness protection had been fully implemented within a week.

8th accused held in Army jawan assault case at Meerut toll plaza

Agency: Last Updated: Meerut (UP), Aug 20 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested the eighth accused in connection with the brutal assault of an Army jawan and his companions by toll plaza employees in the Meerut district, officials said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Ravi (19), a resident of Karnawal, was arrested late Tuesday evening from the Karnawal outpost area on a tip-off, Sarurpur police said. He is being produced before a court. On August 17, Army jawan Kapil, posted in Srinagar and hailing from Gotka village in Meerut, was on his way to Delhi airport to rejoin duty after vacation when his car was caught in a long queue at the Bhuni toll plaza under Sarurpur police station. When he asked the staff to clear the line faster, an altercation broke out and the toll employees allegedly attacked Kapil and his companions, Shivam and Sudhir, with sticks and iron rods, the police said. A video of the incident went viral on social media, triggering protests by locals and widespread online outrage. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra had earlier said that seven accused, identified as Sachin, Vijay, Anuj, Ankit, Suresh Rana, Ankit Sharma and Neeraj Talian alias Bittu, were arrested after CCTV footage analysis. All of them, including Ravi, have been sent to jail, while a search for other absconding accused is on. The case was registered on the complaint of Kapil's father under the provisions relating to attempt to murder, unlawful assembly and robbery of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Taking cognisance of the incident, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) imposed a penalty of Rs 20 lakh on the toll collection agency, M/s Dharam Singh, and initiated proceedings to terminate its contract and debar it from future bids. The Indian Army's Central Command had also issued a sharp reaction, saying it 'strongly condemns such an incident against a serving soldier" and has approached the highest authorities of the Uttar Pradesh Police to ensure justice. 'The Indian Army remains committed to ensuring justice and will pursue the case to its logical conclusion," the Central Command said in a statement. SC dissolves marriage, says ego should 'vanish'

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dissolved a couple's marriage and asked them to look after their minor child, noting their egos should "vanish" now the wedlock was over. A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan, noting it disliked granting divorces, passed the order after the parties filed a joint plea for dissolution of their marriage by mutual consent. "There should be no ego now. Now, there is no marriage. There is ego in marriage. Once there is no marriage, the ego should vanish. Now look after the child," the bench told the estranged couple. The top court was hearing a plea filed by the woman against an interim order passed by the Bombay High Court in the matter. The lawyers appearing for both parties said after several rounds of negotiations during the pendency of appeal, they had decided to seek dissolution of marriage by a decree of divorce by mutual consent on certain terms and conditions. The bench noted the aspect of their child's custody and visitation rights which indicated the child's custody would remain with the mother with the rights of visitation would be with the father in line with the joint application. It came on record that the man would pay Rs 50,000 every month towards his minor daughter. The terms and conditions of settlement in the joint application filed under Article 142 of the Constitution read with section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. While Article 142 empowers the apex court to pass any decree or order necessary for doing "complete justice" in any cause or matter pending before it, Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act deals with divorce by mutual consent.
