Romanian plane brings back stranded Lebanese from Sharm el-Sheikh
by Naharnet Newsdesk 16 June 2025, 12:54 A first Romanian plane carrying Lebanese citizens who were stranded in Sharm el-Sheikh due to the Israel-Iran war arrived Monday morning at the Rafik Hariri International Airport. A statement issued by Lebanon's civil aviation authority had said that it followed up on the issue with the travel agency at the instructions of Public Works and Transportation Minister Fayez Rasamny. Similar flights are scheduled to arrive in Beirut later throughout the day. The unprecedented Israel-Iran confrontation -- involving the use of ballistic and interception missiles, warplanes and drones -- has prompted neighboring countries to close their airspace for lengthy hours and several airlines to cancel flights, which has created travel chaos.

Turkey ready to mediate in Iran-Israel conflict as EU says Russia can't be 'objective'
by Naharnet Newsdesk 16 June 2025, 14:01 Turkey is ready to play a "facilitating role" to end the conflict between arch foes Israel and Iran, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Iranian counterpart in a phone call on Monday, his office said. During the call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Erdogan said: "Turkey is ready to play a facilitating role for the immediate end of the conflict and return to nuclear negotiations," according to his office. The EU on Monday said Russia had "zero credibility" as a potential mediator between Iran and Israel, after US President Donald Trump suggested Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin could play a role. "There has been a recent Russia-Iran partnership agreement, which signals deepening cooperation across multiple areas, including foreign policy and defence. In light of such, Russia cannot be an objective mediator," EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni said.
