Pakistan jails 8 from former PM Imran Khan's party over 2023 riots
Khan is on trial on similar charges, being tried separately. The government accuses him and other leaders of inciting the May 9, 2023, protests, during which demonstrators attacked military and government buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the residence of a senior commander in Lahore.
The prosecution is still presenting witnesses in Khan's proceedings, and Tuesday's verdict does not directly affect his case.
The sentences, issued in a prison trial in Lahore, are among a series of prosecutions involving Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Defence lawyer Burhan Moazzam said they would appeal.
'It is surprising that six people were acquitted while eight were convicted, even though they were all charged under the same allegations,' he said.
The case relates to one of several incidents stemming from the May 9 unrest, involving alleged incitement during attacks near a major intersection in Lahore. Moazzam said separate trials were continuing in connection with other incidents that day.

Thai, Cambodian militaries meet to finesse ceasefire amid claims of truce violations
The militaries of Thailand and Cambodia are scheduled to start negotiations at 10am local time even as small clashes erupted along the border after both sides agreed to a ceasefire at midnight on Monday. Advertisement Confirming the start of the military negotiations, Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said on Tuesday that the border was calm now, according to Reuters. 'There is no escalation,' Phumtham told reporters. 'Right now things are calm.' 'The frontline has eased after a ceasefire took effect from Monday midnight in accordance with the spirit of the agreement between Cambodia and Thailand at a special meeting in Malaysia,' Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said in a post on his official social media platforms on Tuesday. 'A sooner cessation of hostilities will also allow affected people, such as evacuees, to return to their homes and resume normal livelihoods sooner. This ceasefire and peace agreement is yielding positive and effective results.' In the hours between midnight and the military meeting, Thailand's army had accused Cambodia of violating the truce, saying clashes were continuing along the 800km (500-mile) border. Suspect in Michigan Walmart stabbings charged with rarely used state terrorism count
A Michigan prosecutor filed a terrorism charge on Monday against a man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Walmart shop. The charge has been rarely used in the state's courts since it was adopted more than 20 years ago during the national outrage over September 11. Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg said she believes the charge fits because the weekend attack was intended to 'put fear in the entire community and to change how maybe we operate on a daily basis.' But proving that could be difficult. Bradford Gille, 42, has a history of mental health problems. A judge signed an order on Friday, the day before the attack, telling police to find him and take him to a hospital because he was considered a risk to himself or others. Police said they were unable to find him. Moeggenberg also filed attempted murder charges, one for each Walmart stabbing victim. A not-guilty plea was entered for Gille and bond was set at US$100,000. Tobacco companies are 'selling cigarettes with fibreglass and chemicals in 'em just to kill off the population. You can't really accuse me of anything if you're doing that', Gille said in court. Police investigate the scene where 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan on Sunday. Defence minister slams ‘baseless' claim India bowed to pressure to end Pakistan conflict
India's defence minister said on Monday that New Delhi had ended its military conflict with Pakistan in May as it had met all its objectives and had not responded to pressure, rejecting US President Donald Trump's claim that he brokered the truce. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was speaking at the opening of a discussion in parliament on the April 22 attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir, in which 26 men were killed. The attack led to a fierce, four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May, the worst between the nuclear-armed neighbours in nearly three decades. 'India halted its operation because all the political and military objectives studied before and during the conflict had been fully achieved,' Singh said. 'To suggest that the operation was called off under pressure is baseless and entirely incorrect,' he said. India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh (right) on May 5.
