Italy showcases medals for 2026 Winter Games
The medals have the traditional Olympic five-ring symbol on one side, with an inscription on the reverse that details the event and commemorates the venue. The same format has been used for the Paralympics, which has its own distinct symbol.
They were presented at a ceremony in Venice that featured two celebrated retired Italian athletes, swimmer Federica Pellegrini, and Francesca Porcellato, who has won gold medals at both Winter and Summer Paralympics.
"Each medal, whether Olympic or Paralympic, is a story etched into metal: it speaks of effort, determination, sacrifice, and the hopes of those who have lived to reach the podium," said Giovanni Malago, president of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation.
The medals have been produced by the IPZS, the state mint, which is owned by the economy ministry.
A total of 245 gold, 245 silver, and 245 bronze medals will be presented during the Winter Games. In the Paralympics, 137 medals will be awarded in each of the three rankings.
Milan and the town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, one of Italy's most famous ski resorts, are the main hosts of the Games, which run from February 6 to 22 next year. The Paralympics will follow the following month.

Leclerc, meanwhile, has finished on the podium four times but is yet to taste victory. Neither driver has recorded a pole position, either. The three teams to have won race so far this season are McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes. Hamilton, in his first season at Ferrari since his move from Mercedes, is currently sixth in the drivers' standings, a whopping 131 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri. Leclerc is one spot, and 16 points, ahead of Hamilton in fifth. Both Hamilton (five times) and Leclerc (once) have won at Spa-Francorchamps, the longest track on the 24-race calendar. Hamilton won last year's race after George Russell, who won the race on-track, was disqualified post-race.

Privitera, 19, dies after crash at Italian race
Italian junior cyclist Samuele Privitera has died aged 19 after a fall during the opening stage of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta in north west Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) said circumstances around the incident were "still unclear" but Privitera "apparently hit a speed bump and lost control of his bike" and hit his head on a downhill stretch of road 32km from the finish was resuscitated and taken to the hospital in Aosta, near the French and Swiss border, where he later Merckx, general manager and owner of Privitera's team Hagens Berman Jayco, said the rider "always will be the life and personality of this team".Merckx added: "Moments like this are unimaginable."To lose him is devastating beyond words. The initial section of the stage will be neutralised in memory of president Cordiano Dagnoni added: "This news leaves us shocked and forces us to think even more decisively about how to make our races safer."
