McDavid, Crosby lead Olympic camp invite list

CALGARY – Edmonton's Connor McDavid and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby are among 42 NHL players invited to Hockey Canada's men's Olympic orientation camp, set for late August in Calgary.
The orientation camp is a three-day, off-ice event featuring presentations, team-building sessions and meetings aimed at preparing players and staff for the upcoming Olympic season.
The roster includes the six players — McDavid, Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers — named to the team in June.

The list features all 24 players from Canada's championship-winning squad at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, including the same trio of goaltenders — Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues, Adin Hill of the Vegas Golden Knights and Sam Montembeault of the Montreal Canadiens.

Also invited are forwards Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks, Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals, John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal's Nick Suzuki, along with defenceman Evan Bouchard of the Edmonton Oilers.
The men's Olympic hockey tournament runs Feb. 11-22 in Milan, Italy. Canada won its third gold medal in four Games, the last time NHL players participated in the Olympics in 2014.

McDavid's real value is $50 million year, NHL insider speculates
This in from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, his speculation that in a much freer market situation the Edmonton Oilers would be happy to pay Connor McDavid $50 million per year. Article content Talking about the overall trend in player negotiations this off-season, Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts podcast: 'I think a lot of players expect that the two highest salaries after this wave of signings are going to be McDavid and (the Wild's Kirill) Kaprizov. And look, I don't think anyone's going to have issue. If the Oilers could pay McDavid $50 million, he would deserve $50 million.' Article content Article content Friedman continued: 'And Kaprizov is a great player in a great spot to hit it big. So once those players sign, I think you'll see some of those other potential top UFAs next year say, okay, now the top, top, top of the market has been set. It's easier for me to find the sweet spot or the comfortable place with the team to go after those two guys are done.' Article content Article content 1. I've often wondered what McDavid might be paid if there were no salary cap and he was an unrestricted free agent. The most he can get in a salary capped NHL is 20 per cent of Edmonton's salary cap allotment, which would mean $19.1 million on a new deal. Article content But of course, if McDavid signed for as much as $19.1 million per year under the current salary cap system it would mean less cap space to sign other top players and less chance of winning a Stanley Cup. I wondered about a way to test his idea, and came up with this quick back-of-the envelope survey, to look at what the three other top players in the top North American leagues in basketball, football and baseball made in 2025, then compare that to the revenue brought in by their team. Article content When we do that we see that of all these great players McDavid — due to the hard cap model of the NHL's collective agreement — earned by far the least percentage of his team's 2024 revenues. He made $12.5 million, which is 3.2 per cent of Edmonton's $388 million estimated revenue in 2023-24, as reported by Forbes magazine (the source of all the dollar figures here). Article content But what if McDavid took home the same percentage as Dallas Cowboy star Dak Prescott, the highest paid pro football player in America? Prescott makes $127 million, which is 10.6 per cent of the $1.2 billion in revenues made by the Cowboys.

First Nations youth head to Europe for hockey tournaments

(CTV News Edmonton/Connor Hogg) First Nations hockey players from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are headed to Europe Monday to compete against teams in Czechia and Germany. Players from the First Nations Voyageurs U16 Elite AA/AAA gathered in Edmonton on Sunday for a send-off ceremony, celebrating the team's achievements as they begin their journey representing their nations on an international stage. Juliann Yellowbird, the team's manager, said the team is compiled of all young players who are First Nations with treaty status. 'These are the best of the best,' Yellowbird told CTV News Edmonton. The team was formed after Tobias Monaco of Germany and Kehewin First Nation Chief Gordon John reconnected in 2024. John had previously hosted Monaco for six months as an exchange student. In the fall of 2024, Monaco and John gathered allies in Canada and Germany to create an annual cultural sports exchange for young First Nations athletes in hockey and other sports. First Nations and sponsors help the players with funding for equipment and travelling. But the team is about more than just playing a game. 'The brotherhood that is created with this team is amazing,' said Yellowbird, adding that they include tradition, prayer and ceremony in their play. Lincoln Kitchemonia of Okanese First Nation, who has been playing Canada's game since he was six-years-old, said he feels more comfortable playing on an all-Indigenous team. 'You're more shy when you're playing with non-Indigenous people,' Kitchemonia said. 'Playing with this team, I feel comfortable … there's a whole different connection.' Friends, family and community members gathered at the Kihchihkaw Aski Sacred Site to see the 20 players off on their big adventure across the pond. Easton Houle from Dene Tha' First Nation said he has never been on a plane, let alone out of the country – but the nervousness is cut with excitement. 'I'm really excited because I get to see the world … not everybody gets that and I'm very grateful for that.' He said the support from his community at Sunday's farewell motivates him to accomplish his dreams. 'That's one thing about our culture, we have a strong community all the time.'
