Tsing Lung Bridge aims for 2033 opening as Hong Kong expands Route 11 infrastructure

Rendering of the Tsing Lung Bridge, Hong Kong's first two-way, four-lane bridge, connecting Tsing Lung Tung and North Lantau Island as part of Route 11 infrastructure (Simulated image of the Tsing Lung Bridge) The Hong Kong government is accelerating development of the Northern Metropolitan Area through key infrastructure projects, notably Route 11. Spanning approximately 12 kilometers from Lam Tei to North Lantau Island, Route 11 is designated as a strategic trunk road. The Highways Department announced that it will prioritize the Tsing Lung Bridge section of the project, citing its critical role in connecting the Northern Metropolitan Area to the Victoria Harbour Metropolitan Area. ADVERTISEMENT According to the department, the goal is to complete technical conditions for bidding on the bridge by 2026, with funding applications submitted to the Legislative Council in 2027. This timeline is intended to allow for simultaneous detailed design and construction work. The department is aiming for the bridge to open by 2033 or earlier. It will connect Tsing Lung Tung on the New Territories side with North Lantau Island, facilitating smoother cross-regional traffic and easing congestion along existing Highways Department highlighted the symbolic architectural design of the Tsing Lung Bridge, noting that it reflects the identity of Hong Kong. The bridge features an "H"-shaped tower representing 'Hong' and a "K"-shaped crossbar symbolizing 'Kong,' forming a visual representation of "Hong Kong."Officials stated that this distinctive configuration aims to create a recognizable landmark that integrates into the surrounding natural and urban landscape. The bridge is anticipated to become a popular attraction and a social media check-in destination in the future. Its two towers are of unequal height due to specific aviation and maritime considerations, creating an asymmetrical main span. This asymmetry distinguishes it from other regional infrastructure Tsing Lung Bridge's location at the convergence of the Ma Wan Channel, Ha Peng Channel, and Kap Shui Mun Channel imposes strict maritime and aviation requirements. To maintain unimpeded maritime access, the bridge must provide a minimum vertical clearance of 57 meters, equivalent to approximately 20 airspace constraints related to flight operations at the nearby Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok necessitate a height reduction of approximately 55 meters for the bridge tower at the North Lantau end, compared to the tower at the Tsing Lung Tung end. ADVERTISEMENT As a result, the design incorporates bridge towers of differing heights and an asymmetrical main span. These features aim to satisfy regulatory requirements while contributing to the structure's distinctive visual identity. The route will connect with the Lantau Link and the planned Tsing Yi-Lantau Link, providing direct access to Tsing Yi, the broader urban area, and the Central business district via Route 3. ADVERTISEMENT The Highways Department stated that most preliminary tasks for Route 11 have been completed. These include environmental assessments, obtaining necessary permits, and satisfying statutory gazette procedures. These advancements authorize the project to proceed to the construction phase. The department emphasized that the Tsing Lung Bridge section will be developed ahead of other parts of Route 11. The intent is to divert traffic from congested roads such as the Sham Tseng section of Tuen Mun Road and the Ting Kau Bridge, improving overall regional connectivity and transport efficiency. Sensex rises over 500 points, crosses 83,000: Why is stock market rising today?

After weeks of sideways movement and jittery global cues, Dalal Street woke up to a broad-based rally on Thursday morning, with the BSE Sensex soaring over 500 points to cross the 83,000 mark for the first time this year. The Nifty50, too, surged past 25,400 in early trade, buoyed by easing geopolitical tensions and a return of risk appetite in global 9:59 am, the Sensex had gained 549 points to touch 83,305.06, while the Nifty rose by 172.75 points to 25,417.50. The mood across the broader market was upbeat, and volatility remained surprisingly DRIVING THE RALLY?At the heart of Thursday's rally was a glimmer of diplomatic relief: easing tensions between Israel and Iran have reassured global investors, shifting sentiment to a more 'risk-on' mode. Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, noted that 'with ceasefire between Israel and Iran, globally markets are in a risk-on mode.' However, he cautioned that the rally could be short-lived if unresolved trade issues, such as the reciprocal tariff dispute, resurface after July 9, when the current pause ends.'The focus will shift quickly to what happens around that deadline,' he added. 'Positive news on a potential India-US deal could boost markets, while disappointment may constrain the rally.'DOMESTIC TAILWINDSadvertisementThe rally wasn't just a global spillover. Bullishness was underpinned by the Reserve Bank of India's latest bulletin highlighting India's economic resilience, along with low oil prices—hovering around $65.50 per barrel—and buoyant cues from Wall Street, where the S&P 500 is flirting with record Tapse, Senior VP (Research) at Mehta Equities, said Thursday's rally had the hallmarks of a breakout. 'Nifty is hovering near its all-time high of 26,277.35, supported by strong macro indicators and easing geopolitical concerns,' he said. 'Technically, Nifty is poised for further gains with targets at 25,319 and 25,500. Support holds strong around the 25,000 mark.'Among sectoral performers, financials and metals led the charge, with notable stock-specific momentum in names like Vodafone Idea and Lupin. Tapse also highlighted bullish trades in Bank Nifty and picks such as Prestige Estate, Indus Tower, and M& GAP CONCERNSYet, not everyone is celebrating without caveats. Dr. Vijayakumar pointed out that Indian equity valuations have entered overheated territory. 'Valuations are stretched—trading at over 22 times estimated FY26 earnings,' he said. 'In contrast, Chinese stocks, as represented by the Hang Seng Index, are trading at a PE of around 15.'This disparity, he warned, could trigger a 'Sell India, Buy China' pivot among foreign institutional investors (FIIs), especially if global risk appetite shifts or profit-taking begins. However, domestic institutional investors (DIIs), flush with liquidity, may cushion any such INDICATORSadvertisementOn the technical side, momentum remains strong, but analysts advise vigilance. Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities, noted that while Wednesday's Nifty rally of 200 points suggests near-term bullishness, the inside-day pattern points to an imminent large move—though the direction remains uncertain.'Immediate resistance lies between 25,310 and 25,360, with a higher band at 25,500,' he said. 'Support levels are at 24,960–25,010, and deeper at 24,800. If bulls defend these levels, a push toward the 25,800 zone could be on the cards.'WHAT NEXT?The current rally reflects optimism, but it's not without fragility. Geopolitical risks remain on the radar, and trade tensions could flare again in July. Meanwhile, India's elevated valuations demand caution, especially as global investors scan for value now, the Sensex's leap past 83,000 is a positive sign, but whether it marks the start of a sustained uptrend or just a relief rally in disguise will depend on what happens next on the global stage.(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group. US allows ethane to be loaded and shipped to China, but not unloaded

The US sent letters to Enterprise Products and Energy Transfer on Wednesday informing the companies they could load ethane on vessels destined for China but could not unload the ethane in China without authorization, according to a person familiar with the matter and copy of one letter. The letters from the US Department of Commerce follow a licensing requirement imposed several weeks ago on the companies' exports of ethane to China, which halted shipments and led to vessels anchoring in or hovering around the US Gulf Coast. The letters may signal the US preparing to lift restrictions imposed on exports to China in late May and early June, as the US-China trade war shifted from retaliatory tariffs, to curbs on each others supply chains. With China granting rare earth export licenses to some firms and saying it would speed up the approval process, the US now appears close to permitting ethane exports to China. Still, the companies are highly unlikely to risk loading the ethane on vessels and sending them on their way, the person familiar with the matter said. If the vessels make their way to China, it may be difficult to stop them from offloading the ethane and the companies could face penalties of up to twice the value of the shipment if they do. A copy of the letter seen by Reuters and later released by Enterprise Products said, "This letter authorizes Enterprise Products to load vessels with ethane, transport and anchor in foreign ports, even if... to a party located in China," the letter said. "However, Enterprise Products may not complete such export... to a party that is located in China," without further authorization. The securities filing with the letter did not include additional comment. Enterprise Products and Energy Transfer, two of the top US ethane producers and exporters, did not respond to requests for comment. About half of all US ethane exports go to China, where it is used by the petrochemical industry. The US Department of Commerce also did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The ability to load and begin transporting ethane could relieve congestion at ports along the US Gulf coast, where vessels have been stalled. Since May 23, the US imposed new restrictions on exports to China of everything from ethane and chip design software to jet engines and nuclear plant parts.
