Hindustan Times2 days ago

Ayodhya is set for the second phase of the consecration ceremony at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple. According to officials, the ceremony will begin on Tuesday. The officials also said that as a precursor to the 'Pran Pratishtha', a grand sacred procession was flagged off from the banks of the Saryu River on Monday.
Ahead of the event, police and administration officials have put Ayodhya on high alert, with deployment of commandos from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and armoured vehicles around the temple complex. The complex has been declared a red zone, and surveillance will be continued around the clock in three shifts.
The rituals at the upcoming event will include the consecration of idols in Ram Darbar, located on the temple's first floor and in six other temples within the complex walls. According to officials, the main ceremonies will culminate on June 5, the same day as Ganga Dussehra
The rituals to be held on June 3 and 4 include fire offerings, chanting of 1,975 mantras, reciting of devotional hymns like Ram Raksha Stotra, Hanuman Chalisa and other hymns from 6.30 am to 6.30 pm. On June 5, the main consecration of idols of Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Lord Hanuman will take place.
Along with the main consecration event, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to attend three other key events. This includes the Saryu Trayodashi Utsav, the birthday celebrations of trust president Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, and an event on the World Environment Day.
Officials urged people not to visit
A statement was issued by Champat Rai, secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, urging people to not visit Ayodhya as no public invitation has been issued. The statement clarified that while the temple remains open for 'darshan' of lord Ram, the first-floor Ram Darbar and nearby temples are still under construction and are not open to devotees.
Extensive arrangements have been made to make the event a success. District Magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde said that arrangements including waiting areas, drinking water, ORS sachets and sanitation areas have been made for visitors.
Meanwhile, the Kalash Yatra began on Monday evening from the Saryu Ghat and went through Veena Chowk, Ram Path, Singar Haat and Rang Mahal Barrier before reaching the temple premises.

Bypoll turns into a war of words

Kozhikode: Nilambur bypoll campaign has turned into a war of words as opponents are using the remarks of senior leaders, including CM Pinarayi Vijayan and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, to attack each other. While UDF is using the CM's 'anti-Malappuram' remark from a media interview about gold smuggling and anti-national funding, LDF is hitting back by targeting Venugopal for comparing welfare pension payments to bribery before the elections. Venugopal first raked up the CM's Malappuram remarks during UDF's convention on Monday. Then opposition leader VD Satheesan and KPCC chief Sunny Joseph picked it up and accused CPM of having a prejudiced view about Malappuram. Satheesan stepped up the attack on Wednesday by saying it was Vijayan who made serious allegations against Malappuram. "The CM's PR team sent notes to all Delhi-based media claiming that Malappuram was a hub for gold smuggling and extremism. After that, he gave a newspaper interview that echoed Sangh Parivar's line. The CM and Sangh Parivar are walking the same path," he said. Satheesan also said that CPM politburo member A Vijayaraghavan, who came to lead LDF's campaign in Nilambur, had insulted Malappuram many times. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Amplie seus horizontes: Estude no exterior (Clique para mais informações) Study Abroad Saiba Mais Undo "Does he still stand by his earlier statement that Priyanka Gandhi won because communal forces voted for her? Are the 95,000 people who voted for Priyanka in Nilambur all extremists? This question needs a clear answer," he added. LDF candidate M Swaraj hit back saying Congress was bringing up the Malappuram issue out of guilt over its past opposition to the district's formation when it had aligned with Jan Sangh. Meanwhile, LDF objected to Venugopal's comment that LDF govt was using welfare pension disbursements, including dues, as a 'bribe' ahead of bypoll. FM KN Balagopal said the remark insulted 62 lakh pensioners in Kerala by implying they vote for money and demanded an immediate retraction. Swaraj also responded, saying welfare pensions are a rightful benefit and calling them bribes insults the state's poor. Venugopal clarified that during the last Parliament elections, state govt paid two of the six or seven pending pension instalments before polls. "I only asked if they see the disbursement of dues ahead of elections that way. Twisting it into a bribery allegation is a deliberate misrepresentation," he said. Satheesan also said those who withheld pensions for six months are now releasing them just before elections and that is the wrong practice Venugopal pointed out. "We will speak out against the govt's attempts to exploit people's misery," he said. Satheesan said he is taking full responsibility for UDF's official stand in Nilambur. "The fight is between UDF and LDF and no one should try to distract voters from that. Not a single UDF vote will go elsewhere. Political and anti-govt votes will go to UDF. Even BJP is not serious about the contest. When the fight is between UDF and LDF, who else will get the anti-government votes? Nilambur voters are politically aware. Our majority will make that clear," he said.

Columbia University faces loss of accreditation over campus antisemitism concerns

The US Department of Education has formally notified Columbia University's accrediting agency that the university is in violation of federal anti-discrimination laws, citing its alleged failure to protect Jewish students during pro-Palestinian protests on campus. This alleged violation means Columbia "fails to meet the standards for accreditation," according to the department.'Columbia University acted with deliberate indifference,' the Department's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) found, citing the university's failure to adequately respond to harassment of Jewish students in the wake of Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on notification, sent June 4 to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, could jeopardize Columbia's access to crucial federal financial aid. "Accreditors have an enormous public responsibility as gatekeepers of federal student aid. They determine which institutions are eligible for federal student loans and Pell Grants," said US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. While accreditors like the Middle States are independent and nonpartisan, they are recognized by the federal government and play a critical role in ensuring institutions meet quality and compliance benchmarks. Middle States, which has accredited Columbia since 1921, confirmed receipt of the department's letter but declined to comment Education Department's Office for Civil Rights, along with the Department of Health and Human Services, had previously concluded that Columbia acted with 'deliberate indifference' toward the harassment of Jewish students amid heightened campus tensions over Israel's war in has been at the center of the nationwide wave of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel demonstrations over the past year and a half. The university has earlier said it would work with the Trump administration to address antisemitism and June 4 announcement represents the latest escalation by President Donald Trump's administration in its scrutiny of elite universities. 'The agency notified Columbia's accreditor, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, that the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights had found the school to be 'in violation of federal antidiscrimination laws,' according to a press release.'Although Columbia agreed in March to certain reforms involving teaching, hiring, and admissions, the Trump administration has not yet restored USD 400 million in funding it froze, leading to halted research and university president Claire Shipman addressed the issue in an April 14 statement, saying that while Columbia intends to 'seek to continue constructive dialogue with the government,' it would 'reject any agreement that would require us to relinquish our independence and autonomy as an educational institution.'(With inputs from Reuters)Trending Reel

Chhattisgarh government nod for policy to promote tourism in tribal-dominated areas

The Chhattisgarh Cabinet on Wednesday approved a homestay policy to promote tourism in rural and tribal-dominated areas, including the Maoism-hit Bastar division. The 'Chhattisgarh Homestay Policy 2025-30' was approved in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and comes at a time when security forces are carrying out anti-Naxal operations in the Bastar region. Bastar and Sarguja are the two tribal-dominated regions of the State and are known for their natural beauty. A government official said the homestays would offer a rural life experience to visitors and highlight the regional characteristics of tribal areas, local culture, art and craft. The official added that the policy will benefit the locals by offering them a business opportunity to increase their income, which will play a pivotal role in achieving the goal of 'Vocal for Local' and the development of rural tourism. Another major decision taken during the meeting was the transfer of government employees. Under the Transfer Policy 2025, there will be a window of 11 days for transfers at the State level. Under this policy, transfers will be approved by Ministers of the departments concerned from June 14 to 25. No transfer would be allowed after June 25. The official, however, said that emergency cases could be considered through coordination and added that the applications for transfers would be accepted from June 6 to 13.
