Egypt Delivers Medical Aid to Gabonese Ministry of Health in Support of Bilateral Health Cooperation
In a renewed gesture of African solidarity and health diplomacy, Egypt's Ambassador to Gabon, Reham Hussein Ammar, officially handed over a consignment of Egyptian medical aid to Gabon's Minister of Health, as part of Cairo's ongoing support for the Egypt-Gabon Joint Hospital in the capital, Libreville.
The aid package, which includes essential pharmaceuticals, was provided by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD) — an initiative under Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs aimed at strengthening cooperation with African nations through development-focused support.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Gabonese Minister of Health expressed deep gratitude to the Egyptian government and people for their continued commitment to improving public health services in Gabon. The Minister highlighted Egypt's role not only in providing medical supplies but also in offering scholarships and professional training programs across several sectors, which he described as critical to Gabon's human capacity development.
He also voiced hope for the swift arrival of additional Egyptian doctors to serve at the Egypt-Gabon hospital, and expressed interest in expanded future cooperation, saying the medical aid is 'a promising sign of deeper engagement.'
In her remarks, Ambassador Ammar reaffirmed Egypt's strategic vision for reinforcing ties with African nations, particularly in vital sectors like health. She emphasized that the donation symbolizes Egypt's 'long-standing commitment to revitalizing African partnerships, with health care as a cornerstone of that mission.'
'The Government of Egypt attaches great importance to sharing its pharmaceutical capabilities and medical expertise with sisterly African nations, including the Gabonese Republic,' she said.
The Egypt-Gabon Joint Hospital, established in 2009 in Libreville, stands as one of Egypt's flagship development projects in Central Africa. Staffed by Egyptian medical professionals and equipped with Egyptian-supplied technologies, the hospital treats thousands of patients annually and has become a regional hub for multi-specialty care, attracting patients from across Gabon and neighboring provinces.
Egyptian officials say the hospital exemplifies African-led cooperation and sustainable development, aligning with broader continental goals under the African Union's Agenda 2063.
This latest shipment of medical supplies reflects Egypt's intent to scale up its presence and positive impact in Africa through practical, people-centered initiatives — particularly in health care, where access and equity remain key challenges across the continent.

World Bank proposes Egypt join new global health initiative
Egypt and the World Bank have discussed strengthening cooperation to support the country's economic development, with the bank proposing that Egypt join a new global health initiative, the planning ministry said on Tuesday. The proposal was made during a meeting between Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, and the World Bank's Regional Director for Egypt, Yemen, and Djibouti, Stephane Guimbert. According to a ministry statement, Guimbert presented an overview of a new World Bank-led global health initiative that aims to expand basic health coverage to an additional 1.5 billion people in middle- and low-income countries. He raised the idea of Egypt joining as a key participant, citing the country's significant progress in health sector reforms, particularly the implementation of its Universal Health Insurance system, which is one of the largest social protection projects in the region. For her part, Al-Mashat emphasized the importance of the partnership with the World Bank Group as a 'knowledge partner' to the Egyptian government. She highlighted joint efforts to develop a comprehensive implementation plan to achieve economic development, support macroeconomic stability, promote industrial development, mobilise foreign direct investment (FDI), and increase investment in human capital. The minister also outlined the government's national narrative for economic development, a framework which she said aims to create a unified development discourse. Its pillars include preparing a National Strategy for Industrial Development to increase exports, enhancing the value-added of manufacturing, expanding the green economy's contribution to GDP, and promoting investment in human capital. The meeting also covered updates on the World Bank's existing portfolio in Egypt, including the Universal Health Insurance Project, the Sustainable Rural Sanitation Services Programme, the Takaful and Karama social safety net programme, the Upper Egypt Local Development Program, and the Cairo-Alexandria Trade Logistics Development Project.

Egypt's EDA discusses Johnson & Johnson's plans to expand investment in local pharmaceutical sector
Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), Ali Ghamrawy, met with a delegation from Johnson & Johnson to strengthen collaboration with one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. The meeting focused on fostering joint efforts in training, supporting pharmaceutical innovation, and facilitating access to advanced medicines—all in line with Egypt's strategy to enhance its healthcare sector and achieve the goals of Egypt Vision 2030. Key discussion points included cooperation in training programmes aimed at building the capacity of healthcare professionals, particularly in the field of health economics and its critical role in informed decision-making. The talks also covered mechanisms to ensure the timely and consistent availability of Johnson & Johnson's pharmaceutical innovations, aligned with national efforts to modernise healthcare and introduce cutting-edge medicines that advance public health in Egypt. During the meeting, Ghamrawy emphasised that the EDA attaches great importance to partnerships with leading international companies to help transfer expertise and technology. He added that this approach facilitates the registration and availability of modern medicines, supporting the state's plans to enhance the healthcare sector and achieve pharmaceutical self-sufficiency. Internet of Things helps fight crop diseases sustainably: Egyptian phytopathologist
Travelling across Egypt's governorates, Ayther Amr — a young Egyptian phytopathologist and Master's researcher at Cairo University — is demonstrating how the blend of biological innovation and precision agriculture could redefine sustainable farming in Egypt. As a member of the plant pathology research team at the Agricultural Research Center and through his work with the private firm Project Future Egypt, Amr focuses on adapting biological solutions to local agricultural and climate conditions. His main work centres on beneficial strains of Trichoderma — eco-friendly alternatives to chemical pesticides. In Egypt's challenging desert environment, Amr participated in greenhouse trials testing two Trichoderma strains, applied in both liquid and powder forms, on tomato plants infected with Botrytis cinerea — the fungus responsible for grey mould, a widespread pathogen affecting food and ornamental crops worldwide. 'Trichoderma is a genus of fungi widely used in agriculture as a direct biological control agent against plant pathogens,' Amr explains. He describes the experiment: 'We tested two scenarios — one with mild infection and another with advanced symptoms — to evaluate how effectively these beneficial fungi could work under precision-controlled conditions. We used an advanced climate control system powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor humidity, temperature, and ventilation in real time.' The trial, which lasted between 7 and 15 days with daily observation, produced encouraging results. In mildly infected plants, fungal activity was stopped entirely. In plants with more advanced infection, disease severity dropped by over 60% compared to untreated plants. 'The experiment proved that technology alone isn't the solution — but it creates the optimal conditions for nature to act,' Amr says. 'It gives beneficial microbes the environment they need to work effectively.' Following the success in greenhouses, the team extended the trials to open fields across five Egyptian regions: Beni Suef, Minya, Sohag, El Sadat, and Mansoura. The results were consistent. 'This consistency helped convince farmers,' Amr notes. 'Despite different backgrounds and ways of thinking, farmers across these areas shared the belief that healthy soil, supported by precision agriculture and beneficial microbes, is key to a safer, more sustainable future.' Looking ahead, the team is preparing to collaborate with Chinese partners to expand this approach to diverse environments across Africa and Asia. The goal, Amr adds, is to develop advanced bioformulations adapted to different climate zones and refine the technology for large-scale open field use.
