Chelsea have allocated $15.5 million (£11.4m) in Club World Cup bonuses to be distributed among players, with a portion being donated to the family of
Diogo Jota
and Andre Silva. The decision came after Chelsea's victory in FIFA's expanded tournament, where they defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in July.
The bonus fund will be distributed equally among the players who represented Enzo Maresca's side during the tournament. Each portion amounts to more than $500,000.
The decision to include a payment to Jota's family was made jointly between the club and players. This gesture follows the passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who played for Portuguese club Penafiel, in the Spanish province of Zamora on July 3, ten days before Chelsea's Club World Cup final victory.
Liverpool Football Club has undertaken several initiatives to honour Jota's memory. The club has designated a permanent tribute to the Portuguese forward, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances during his tenure at Liverpool.
For the 2025-26 season, Liverpool players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets. This tribute acknowledges Jota's significant contribution to the club since his arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.

The LFC Foundation, Liverpool's official charity, will launch a grassroots football program in honour of the Portugal international. This initiative aims to continue Jota's legacy through community engagement and youth development.
Liverpool has planned additional commemorative gestures for their first Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth at Anfield. These include a special fan mosaic and a minute's silence to remember the forward.

Soccer-Title dreams and redemption: Premier League teams gear up for new campaign

By Lori Ewing HT Image MANCHESTER, England, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Fresh off a dominant title-winning campaign, Liverpool kick off the new Premier League season on Friday as the team to beat, as the Reds have transitioned from Juergen Klopp's high-octane chaos to a more measured possession-based style under Arne Slot. Liverpool host Bournemouth in the season's curtain-raiser on what is sure to be an emotional night at Anfield after the July 3 death of forward Diogo Jota in a car crash. Liverpool, who locked up last year's title with four matches to spare, had a bold and ambitious summer, signing Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, who headline a revamped attack that promises to be among the most explosive in the league. They also added pace at fullback by acquiring Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk remain central pillars. The key question is can Liverpool's new-look defence hold firm to support a title repeat? Slot is cautiously optimistic. "The reason that it is so difficult is there are so many competitors who can also win the league here," he said on Thursday. "To win it once is already very, very special. That is unbelievable if you are able to do it (twice) in this league. This year it is probably going to be harder than before." Bournemouth finished ninth last season. Manchester City travel to Wolverhampton on Saturday as Pep Guardiola looks to restore his revamped team to their former glory after last term's third-place disappointment. Rodri, whose absence last season due to a serious knee injury contributed to City's poor campaign, is facing a race to get fit for their opening match after picking up an injury during the FIFA Club World Cup. The Ballon d'Or winner has returned to training, but Guardiola said he will not be "really, really fit" until after the September international break. City finished 13 points behind Liverpool last season. Wolves were 16th. Perennial contenders Arsenal, who have finished second three seasons running, travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to play Manchester United in a much-anticipated clash of two revamped teams. Desperate to break the second-place cycle, the Gunners added quality and depth in signing Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard to bolster the midfield, and Viktor Gyökeres to help solve their long-standing striker issue. Arsenal's defence remains elite — and will be put to the test against United's brand new front three of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo. After their dismal 15th-place finish last season under new boss Ruben Amorim, United have been in full rebuild mode, with expectations high but patience wearing thin. The Red Devils are aiming for a top-four finish and a return to European football. But United remain a wild card. The big question is can Amorim quickly galvanise his new-look squad into a competitive force, or will this be another frustrating season of transition? The three promoted clubs get a taste of England's top flight this weekend with Sunderland hosting West Ham United and Burnley travelling to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, and Leeds United hosting Everton on Monday. Lerone Murphy: From Manchester streets to UFC stardom – the making of 'The Miracle'

Image credit: Instragram Growing up in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, Lerone Murphy's childhood was a whirlwind of football, friends, and the occasional mischief. Living near Manchester United's iconic stadium meant the game was never far away. 'My childhood was crazy,' Murphy recalls. 'I used to love playing football, going out with friends. Sometimes we got into trouble, but it was fun. Football was a big part of my life.' But life in a deprived, rough area shaped him in ways beyond sport. 'It made me mentally resilient,' he says. 'I got into a lot of fights when I was younger, and that toughened me up.' For years, football seemed like his future—until a devastating knee injury at 16 changed everything. Playing in a cup final, Murphy suffered a serious blow. 'I blew my knee up, and that set me back,' he remembers. 'It took me away from sport altogether. Without that, I went down the wrong path.' Combat sports weren't initially on his radar, even though his uncle, Oliver Harrison, was a respected boxing trainer who worked with big names like Amir Khan. 'It was inspiring, seeing what he was doing,' Murphy says, 'but I never thought I'd be a fighter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like All August Trades Earn Luxury Rewards Vantage Markets IN Register Undo I just wanted to be a footballer.' That changed when a gym opened in Manchester. Training with his cousin, Murphy discovered mixed martial arts—and instantly connected with it. 'It was love at first sight,' he admits. 'I'd always been into combat through things like anime and Street Fighter, but I'd never tried it. Once I did, I was hooked.' Murphy turned professional in 2016, and within three years, he was making his UFC debut—a rapid rise built on relentless dedication. 'I train every day. I don't do anything else but train or think about fighting,' he says. 'That's why I've grown so quickly.' But perhaps the most pivotal moment of his life came in 2013, when he was 21. Leaving a barbershop, Murphy was shot—a brush with death that would alter his path forever. 'It was a dark time,' he admits. 'But it was also the moment that changed me. If that didn't happen, who knows what I'd be doing now. As strange as it sounds, I'm happy it happened because it put me on the path to MMA.' That life-altering event earned him the nickname 'The Miracle,' a badge of resilience he carries into every fight. 'It reminds me I can get through anything,' he says. 'Even if things don't go your way, it doesn't mean it's the end. You can turn things around if you stay resilient.' Training at Manchester Top Team has been key to his continued growth. Surrounded by high-level fighters chasing the same dreams, Murphy has refined his skills while staying loyal to the team that shaped him. 'It's good to have that environment,' he says. 'It keeps you sharp.' For young people facing tough times, Murphy's message is simple but heartfelt: 'There's always light at the end of the tunnel. It's never over until it's over. If you're still here, you can change your situation. Keep good people around you, lean on them, and cut out the bad influences. That's the main thing.' Looking ahead, Murphy's ambitions are crystal clear. 'My goal is to be UFC champion—and defend it in Manchester. That's my dream.'
