Whether it's sky-high credit card balances, expensive medical bills, high-rate personal loans or lingering student loans, carrying costly debt has become a common thread for households across the country. According to the latest Federal Reserve data, total household debt hit a new record high of $18.04 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2024. And, that uptick in total debt coincided with an increase in delinquent credit card and auto loan payments, both of which are indicators of how difficult it is for Americans to keep up with their debts in today's inflationary environment.
If you're one of the many who are struggling right now, you may be exploring your options, like debt forgiveness, to find relief. When you pursue debt forgiveness, the goal is to work with your creditors to try and settle the debt for less than what you currently owe. That, in turn, can provide some serious relief, helping you get your finances back on track. But here's the thing: Not all debts are created equal when it comes to forgiveness. While certain types of debt can be reduced and partially forgiven, others are excluded.
So, before you sign on the dotted line for a debt forgiveness program, you need to know what debts might actually be eligible for forgiveness and which ones you'll still be stuck with. Below, we'll detail what qualifies — and what doesn't — if you're trying to have your debt forgiven.

What types of debts qualify for debt forgiveness?
Several types of debts qualify for debt forgiveness, including:
Credit card debt: Credit card debt is one of the most commonly forgiven types of debt, so if you're carrying a hefty card balance that you can no longer afford, this debt relief option could be smart to pursue. In many cases, you may even be able to reduce your credit card debt by 30% to 50% by offering a lump-sum settlement to the creditor. However, you typically need to be significantly behind on your payments and be experiencing serious financial hardship before a creditor will consider reducing what you owe.
Medical debt: Medical bills can be a major source of financial stress, but fortunately, these types of debts are often eligible for forgiveness. Many hospitals offer financial assistance programs that can reduce or eliminate bills based on income and need. Medical debt is also a common target for debt collectors, so like credit card debt, it can often be settled for less than the full balance by negotiating on your own or with the help of a debt relief company.
Private student loans (in certain cases): Some borrowers with private student loans may qualify for partial forgiveness through debt settlement. This usually requires showing that repayment is not feasible due to long-term financial hardship, but as with other types of debt, lenders aren't required to forgive any portion of private student loans, so outcomes vary widely. If you go this route, working with a debt relief professional who understands the private loan landscape can help improve your chances of a successful outcome.
Unsecured personal loans: Like credit card debt, unsecured personal loans, which are loans not tied to collateral like a car or house, may be eligible for forgiveness through debt settlement. If the lender believes you're unable to pay the full amount, they may agree to take a reduced balance to recover at least part of the debt. This is more common when the loan is already in collections or severely delinquent.

What types of debt won't qualify for debt forgiveness?
And, these are the debts that typically won't qualify for forgiveness:
Federal student loans: Federal student loans don't typically qualify for settlement programs, but they generally have their separate channels, like income-driven repayment plans or Public Service Loan Forgiveness. If you're not eligible for those types of forgiveness or reduced repayment options, you'll be expected to repay the full student loan debt.
Tax debt (unless you qualify for an IRS program): Tax debt owed to the IRS or your state can be extremely difficult to get rid of through traditional debt forgiveness. That said, the IRS does offer programs like Offer in Compromise (OIC), which allows you to settle for less than you owe if you can prove serious financial hardship. These programs can be complex to navigate, though, and approval isn't guaranteed. Many people will need professional help during the process.
Child support and alimony: Debts related to court-ordered child support or alimony payments are not eligible for forgiveness, either. These are legal obligations, and failing to pay them can result in wage garnishment and even jail time in some cases. If you're struggling with these payments, your only option is to go through the legal system to request a modification.
Secured debt like mortgages and car loans: If you fall behind on a mortgage or auto loan, the lender has the right to repossess the asset (your home or car). These loans are backed by collateral, so lenders have more security and less incentive to forgive the debt. In some rare situations, such as a short sale or a voluntary surrender of a vehicle, you might be able to negotiate a reduced deficiency balance, but true forgiveness is rare.

As demand for master's and doctoral degrees surges, too few programs exist to support the students most often excluded—despite their potential. The United States stands at a crossroads. While innovation, competitiveness, and global leadership increasingly depend on highly educated workers, access to graduate education remains deeply unequal and underfunded. Over 60% of business and government leaders hold graduate degrees—with more than half in business and nearly a third in law. A 2020 report by Brint and colleagues found that 61% of top media figures and 78% of think tank and foundation leaders also held advanced degrees. In many leadership roles, graduate education is no longer a competitive advantage—it's a requirement. Demand is rising. A 2024 report from Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce projects that nearly 1 in 5 jobs will soon require an advanced degree. Among 'good jobs'—those offering middle-class wages of $43,000 or more—1 in 4 will demand graduate credentials. Yet access to graduate education remains deeply inequitable. Madeline Brighouse Glueck finds that parental education still shapes graduate enrollment, especially in high-investment, high-return programs like law, medicine, and PhDs. In medicine alone, over 75% of students come from the top two income quintiles. Even academically qualified first-generation and low-income students are often left behind. While families with financial and social capital can navigate elite admissions and cover soaring costs, others are shut out. The only federally funded graduate pipeline program is the McNair Scholars Program, which supports first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented undergraduates seeking PhDs. This program—and others like Upward Bound—are now at risk of being defunded. As the federal government grows increasingly hostile toward identity-based programs in higher education, the burden of promoting equitable access is falling to the private sector and nonprofit organizations. Yet only a handful of national nonprofits directly focus on this issue: These organizations are doing powerful work—but their combined reach can only serve a fraction of the students who deserve access. To meet the moment, coordinated investments are needed—not just in graduate preparation, but also in affordability, mentorship, and long-term support: Graduate education is not a luxury—it is a national imperative. If we want to lead in science, health, law, and business—and if we believe in opportunity—we must invest in the people who will lead those fields. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Bush family's nonprofit Points of Light will lead an effort to double the number of people who volunteer with U.S. charitable organizations from 75 million annually to 150 million in 10 years. The ambitious goal, announced in New Orleans at the foundation's annual conference, which concluded Friday, would represent a major change in the way Americans spend their time and interact with nonprofits. It aspires to mobilize people to volunteer with nonprofits in the U.S. at a scale that only federal programs like AmeriCorps have in the past. It also coincides with deep federal funding cuts that threaten the financial stability of many nonprofits and with an effort to gut AmeriCorps programs, which sent 200,000 volunteers all over the country. A judge on Wednesday paused those cuts in some states, which had sued the Trump administration. Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO of Points of Light, said that while the campaign has been in development well before the federal cuts, the nonprofit's board members recently met and decided to move forward. 'What our board said was, 'We have to do it now. We have to put the stake in the ground now. It's more important than it was before the disruption of AmeriCorps,'' she said in an interview with The Associated Press. She said the nonprofit aims to raise and spend $100 million over the next three years to support the goal. Points of Light, which is based in Atlanta, was founded by President George H.W. Bush to champion his vision of volunteerism. It has carried on his tradition of giving out a daily award to a volunteer around the country, built a global network of volunteer organizations and cultivated corporate volunteer programs. Speaking Wednesday in New Orleans, Points of Light's board chair Neil Bush told the organization's annual conference that the capacity volunteers add to nonprofits will have a huge impact on communities. 'Our mission is to make volunteering and service easier, more impactful, more sustained,' Bush said. 'Because, let's be honest, the problems in our communities aren't going to fix themselves.' According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps, the rate of participation has plateaued since 2002, with a noticeable dip during the pandemic. Susan M. Chambré, professor emerita at Baruch College who studied volunteering for decades, said Points of Light's goal of doubling the number of volunteers was admirable but unrealistic, given that volunteer rates have not varied significantly over time. But she said more research is needed into what motivates volunteers, which would give insight into how to recruit people. She also said volunteering has become more transactional over time, directed by staff as opposed to organized by volunteers themselves. In making its case for increasing volunteer participation in a recent report, Points of Light drew on research from nonprofits like Independent Sector, the National Alliance for Volunteer Engagement and the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland. Sirangelo said they want to better measure the impact volunteers make, not just the hours they put in, for example. They also see a major role for technology to better connect potential volunteers to opportunities, though they acknowledge that many have tried to do that through apps and online platforms. Reaching young people will also be a major part of accomplishing this increase in volunteer participation. Sirangelo said she's observed that many young people who do want to participate are founding their own nonprofits rather than joining an existing one. 'We're not welcoming them to our institutions, so they have to go found something,' she said. 'That dynamic has to change.' As the board was considering this new goal, they reached out for advice to Alex Edgar, who is now the youth engagement manager at Made By Us. They ultimately invited him to join the board as a full voting member and agreed to bring on a second young person as well. 'I think for volunteering and the incredible work that Points of Light is leading to really have a deeper connection with my generation, it needs to be done in a way that isn't just talking to or at young people, but really co-created across generations,' said Edgar, who is 21. Karmit Bulman, who has researched and supported volunteer engagement for many years, said she was very pleased to see Points of Light make this commitment. 'They are probably the most well known volunteerism organization in the country and I really appreciate their leadership,' said Bulman, who is currently the executive director of East Side Learning Center, a nonprofit in St. Paul. Bulman said there are many people willing to help out in their communities but who are not willing to jump through hoops to volunteer with a nonprofit. 'We also need to recognize that it's a pretty darn stressful time in people's lives right now,' she said. 'There's a lot of uncertainty personally and professionally and financially for a lot of people.
