Sensex adds 70 points: RIL rallies 2%, IT leads gains; pharma, metals lag

Stocks market closing bell, Tuesday, April 29, 2025: Shares of information technology (IT) companies stole the spotlight on Tuesday, as the benchmark Indian equity indices settled with marginal gains. The broader markets, however, showed resilience and settled higher, while the sectoral markets witnessed profit booking and ended broadly on a lower note.
The benchmarks — BSE Sensex settled at 80,288.38, up marginally by 70.01 points or 0.09 per cent, and the NSE Nifty50 closed at 24,335.95, higher by merely 7.45 points or 0.03 per cent. Notably, the index heavyweight Reliance Industries, which was also the top gainer among the Sensex constituent stocks, settled with gains of 2.26 per cent.
Tech Mahindra, Eternals, IndusInd Bank, and HCL Tech were among the 16 constituent stocks that ended with gains of up to 2.14 per cent. Conversely, UltraTech Cement, Sun Pharma, Power Grid Corporation, NTPC, and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the 14 Sensex constituent stocks that ended in the red, with losses extending up to 2.39 per cent.
Among the broader indices, the Nifty MidCap100 and Nifty SmallCap100 ended higher by 0.27 per cent and 0.37 per cent, respectively. Data Patterns (14.93 per cent), Garden Reach Shipbuilders (12.25 per cent), Cochin Shipyard (9.88 per cent), and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (8.71 per cent) were among the top gainers in the midcap space.
IT shines bright
Among the sectoral indices in the NSE, Nifty IT index hit a 3-week high and emerged as the top performer by settling higher by 1.23 per cent led by LTI MindTree (2.30 per cent), and Tech Mahindra (2.29 per cent). Consumer Durables (0.62 per cent), and Oil & Gas (0.47 per cent) were other sectoral indices that ended in green, while others settled lower on Monday. Among them, intraday profit booking was seen in select pharma stocks, resulting in a 1 per cent decline for the Pharma index. Nifty FMCG, auto, realty, and banking indices too closed in red.
Caution prevails, but stock selection key
The national market, Vinod Nair, head of research, Geojit Investments, said, exhibited largely range-bound oscillation, as caution prevailed amid geopolitical concerns over border tensions. The sustained inflows from FIIs provided support to market sentiment and restricted further pessimism.
"Meanwhile, mixed Q4 results have raised the risk of downward revisions to FY26 projections. In combination with apprehensions surrounding potential retaliatory actions, these developments may lead to some consolidation in the near term," said Nair. Markets traded lackluster and ended nearly unchanged in the absence of any significant trigger, said Ajit Mishra – SVP, research, Religare Broking. Beyond the strong performance from banking and financials, rotational buying was seen in heavyweight stocks from other sectors such as IT, energy, and auto. This trend, Mishra believes, could support the index in maintaining its positive bias. "Hence, any short-term pause or consolidation should be viewed as healthy. Participants are advised to continue with a 'buy on dips' strategy, focusing on stock selection based on relative strength," said Mishra.
Nifty50 Technical outlook
Technically, the Nifty index formed a shooting star candle on the daily chart, signaling selling pressure at higher levels, with 24,460 acting as a short-term hurdle. Sustaining above this level, Hrishikesh Yedve, AVP - technical and derivatives research at Asit C. Mehta Investment Intermediates, said, could lead to a rally toward 24,800–24,850.
"On the downside, key support lies at the 200-Day Simple Moving Average around 24,050, followed by 23,850. Traders should monitor these levels for potential trading opportunities," Yedve added.
Meanwhile, Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research at Kotak Securities, pointed out that the market is consistently facing resistance near the 24,450 zone. A small bearish candle near this important resistance level indicates indecisiveness between the bulls and the bears.
On the upside, Chouhan believes 24,450 would be the immediate breakout level for the bulls. Above this level, the market could rally toward 24,550–24,600. "On the other hand, if the market falls below 24,250, selling pressure is likely to accelerate. Below this level, we could see a quick correction down to 24,150–24,100," said Chouhan.

Even stars attainable, says Shubhanshu Shukla; Ax-4 liftoff now on June 10

BENGALURU: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of India and three other members of Axiom-4 mission's multinational crew will launch for International Space Station on June 10 at 5.52pm IST, two days later than the originally planned June 8 lift-off. Axiom Space announced the revised schedule Tuesday, citing no reason for the delay. The mission, led by veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson, will launch from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex in Florida. Shukla addressed the world in a stirring final message, combining gratitude, science, and India's cultural pride. "Even stars are attainable," he said. "The last few months have been nothing short of extraordinary - of discovery and unshakable resolve. From diverse systems to advanced platforms, across continents and cultures. This training has been intense but deeply rewarding." Carrying not just scientific equipment but "the hopes and dreams of a billion hearts", Shukla will conduct seven experiments designed by Indian research institutions. These investigations, ranging from stem cell cultures to crop seed behaviour in microgravity, aim to boost India's presence in space-based science. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "These experiments will pave the way for India's progress in microgravity science," he said. "I am proud to be the bridge between Earth and orbit for this pioneering research." Commander Whitson praised her team's dedication, work ethic, and cultural richness. She introduced the crew's zero-gravity indicator - Joy, a swan representing "Wisdom in India", "Resilience in Poland," and "Grace in Hungary". To honour India's artistic spirit, Shukla will also carry artefacts crafted by students of National Institute of Design. "I will carry them with deep pride," he said. The mission will feature live interactions from orbit, including sessions with Indian VIPs, students, academia, and space industry leaders. Asked about a possible link-up with PM Modi, Shukla confirmed multiple planned outreach events. He also paid tribute to India's first astronaut Wing Commander (retd) Rakesh Sharma, calling him a mentor. "I am carrying something to honour him, but I cannot reveal it yet - I haven't told him, and I want that to be a surprise." Banks park big money with 'rival' mutual funds

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Much of the debate in the banking industry in 2024 revolved around why the deposits growth was extremely muted in relation to the growth in credit. Some blamed it on mutual funds, some on gold and others on derivatives trading by individuals. But the truth was a lot more 2025, Indian financial markets are seeing something that they don't see often. Banks, which, forever, used to seek deposits or borrow from the market to lend are doing something strange: they are pouring funds into mutual funds which, partly, compete with them for a share of the investor's mutual fund investments jumped 91% on year to ₹1.19 lakh crore as on March 21, 2025, from ₹62,499 crore a year earlier, data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bulletin showed. Banks' MF investments had grown 28% in the previous fundamental business of banks is to lend to individuals who are keen to buy homes and cars, or to those entrepreneurs and companies which are looking to put up plants or set up services business. But they seem to be keen on giving funds to MFs instead of directly lending to borrowers. Why is it?There may be two reasons for that-one, that there is not much demand for loans from banks, and second, that they are suddenly finding themselves with surplus funds because of what the monetary authorities are doing."Besides suboptimal credit growth, bank investments in mutual funds schemes have gone up due to surplus liquidity conditions, favourable market conditions and relatively faster execution," said Vinod AN, general manager and treasury head at South Indian Bank Banks loans grew 12.1% in FY25, down from 16.3% a year earlier. This is probably due to slowing income growth and uncertainties on the jobs front for many. This situation is the opposite of what was the situation in the year before when loans grew 16.3%, and deposits were at 12.9% growth. This led to a lot of debate about whether there is a behavioural shift in savers."Households and consumers who traditionally leaned on banks for parking or investing their savings are increasingly turning to capital markets and other financial intermediaries," said former RBI governor Shaktikanta Das. "While bank deposits continue to remain dominant as a percentage of financial assets owned by households, their share has been declining. Households are turning to other avenues for deploying their savings instead of banks." While individual behaviour was part of the problem, there was also a monetary phenomenon at work. The RBI, which wanted to tame inflation kept the monetary conditions tight, forcing banks to borrow from it or the market. But that has since changed to accommodative from banking system is in surplus at ₹1.5 lakh crore. Banks probably have more than what they need to meet the loans are parking excess funds with MFs. Are they buying shares? Or, are they doing SIPs? Neither. They know that this is a short-term issue. They are also doing something to earn higher short-term returns. "Most investments are in liquid and money market schemes, which is also reflected in the MF investment numbers where investments are in zero risk short-term debt instruments such as T-bills where returns are higher," said Venkat N Chalasani, CEO, Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

'Sitaare Zameen Par' makers shares his opinion on marching of tech in cinema

Director R.S. Prasanna, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par', feels that human beings will soon catch up with the technological changes in filmmaking. The filmmaker spoke with IANS in the run-up to the release of his film, which features Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh. He recollected how he saw Indian cinema legend Kamal Haasan experimenting with a digital camera, Red Dragon. Speaking with IANS, Prasanna said, "I think the industry is pretty fast in adapting, like I remember when 35mm film was there and I was in film school and Kamal Haasan sir was testing the Red camera in our L.V. Prasad Film Institute, Chennai where I studied. He was doing a test shoot. I remember all the people around saying, 'it's just a fad and it'll not happen, it's not gonna happen', and it did". Aamir Khan's altered AI video hits cyberspace; 'Mr Perfectionist' issues clarification on 'endorsing' a particular political party The director said that one cannot stop the march of technology and one has to adapt. The audience will demand a change, the filmmakers will rise, the technological change will happen as it should, and experiments will keep happening, some will click, some will not. He further mentioned, "But I think one thing which will never change is the way our hearts beat, so as long as the heart is there in everything, the visual is only pixels, the sound is only decibels, but that feeling, that soul, that is, as long as we have a heart, stories told by humans will always be relevant". He then cited the example of romance as to how the shape or form of romance in cinematic storytelling has changed but the soul is the same. He shared, "If you see around yourself, romance has been there from early manage, they may say romance has changed, no romance has not changed, the medium has changed, today you call it situationship or anything else but, still the heart pains if you don't get to be with the person of your choice". "I feel unless genetically our heart changes or our mind changes, I think storytelling and emotions will be the same, the form will keep changing and we have to be on the awareness of that as a director, but I think for me as a filmmaker, I'm only looking for the soul, which I think soul is very old, so it won't change that fast", he added. Produced by Aamir Khan under his banner, Aamir Khan Productions, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is set to release in cinemas on June 20, 2025.
