Wicklow Darkness Into Light: More than 1,000 people take part in town's ninth walk
The organising committee consisted of members of Wicklow and District Lions Club plus staff and students from Coláiste Chill Mhantáin.
Darkness into Light committee member Geraldine Mooney said: 'A night like this wouldn't have happened without the hard work ad dedication of the committee. The helpers on board were exceptional and we are so grateful towards their efforts.'
Before setting off for the 4.15am start, participants took part in a warm-up sessions to get them prepared, while Fergal Canterbury provided the music which helped set the atmosphere as everyone gathered at Leitrim Place, beside the Brass Fox.
Darkness into Light departed at 4.15am, making its way through the town, along the port access Road, past Wicklow Primary Care Centre, and back along the Murrough. Warm coffee and tea awaited all the participants back at the finishing line to help them freshen up after their journey.
A large proportion of those taking part stayed around afterwards to mingle and watch the sun rise together.
The fundraising continues this Saturday, May 17, with a 'Choirs Unite for Pieta' concert at Dominican College Wicklow, starting at 7.30pm. The performers on the night will be Wicklow Male Voice Choir and special guests, the Duhallow Choral Society from Co Cork.
Tickets are available from Earls Newsagents or from any member of the choir and all Lions members. All children are welcome free of charge.
Next year marks Wicklow town's tenth year supporting Darkness into Light and there are some big plans in motion to mark the occasion.

Wicklow Regatta gearing up for raft race and family day as Ireland's oldest maritime festival still draws large crowds
Nicola Moran was crowned the new Regatta Queen for 2025 at the festival's start, and has been doing the rounds, visiting some of the events taking place, and handing out prizes to the likes of the winners of the battle of the bands and the bar persons race. Regatta Chair John Goodman said: 'We are actually oversubscribed for some of our events this year, and have waiting-lists for them. Due to popular demand, more places have been added to the Astronomy night taking place at Wicklow Sailing Club with Enda Kelly from 9pm on Thursday, July 31. 'We have the raft race taking place on Sunday at 3pm, which always attracts a large crowd. A lot of effort goes into the rafts and people love watching the rafts hit the water and all the chaos involved. We will be holding our duck race on Monday at 7pm and ducks can still be purchased from any member of the Regatta committee. Hopefully, we will be blessed with some good weather, like we have been getting for most of the Regatta.' John added: 'We had an incredible record-breaking turnout for our outdoor quiz organised by Wicklow and District Lions Club, with 50 teams competing. We had some lovely weather for the occasion and things couldn't have gone any better.' The champions, with a total score of 90, were Michael Galligan, James Galligan, Peter O'Keane and Gareth Fitzpatrick. The team consisting of Caroline Mangan, Marie Galligan, Melanie Forde and Sarah Fitzpatrick finished as runners-up. The barman's race was held on Monday evening and featured ten entries trying to prove just how steady their hand was by racing around Bachelors Walk holding a tray of pints and attempting to spill as little as possible. The street was lined with eager spectators roaring on all the different competitors. The winner was Luka Coppola of The Bridge Tavern, who beat last year's winner, Sam Norton of Phil Healy's, into second place. In third was Darragh Allen of The Bridge Tavern. Local artist Pat Davis also greeted visitors as he explained the inspiration behind his stunning mural artwork alongside along the pier wall at Wicklow Harbour, which attracted a large crowd. Saturday night was electric as some of the best local talent hit the stage for an unforgettable battle of the bands showdown. Zak Sheane secured top spot after a mesmerising performance. Other acts taking to the stage included Goodbye Eddie, Rory McCall, Steel Druids and The Only Ones. A kids treasure hunt takes place on Wednesday, July 30, at the Murrough car park from 11am, while the Wicklow's Got Talent competition takes place at the De La Salle Pastoral Centre at 6pm. A kids heritage walk with historian John Finlay meets at 11am on Thursday, July 31, at Bachelors Walk. An art workshop takes place with Don Conroy from 2pm at te De La Salle Pastoral Centre. On Friday, August 1, you can get the chance to try out an Irish instrument at Comhaltas Hall, beside the Brass Fox. Family day takes place on Saturday, August 2, from 2.30pm at St Patrick's NS, which will also run alongside a teddy and dolls picnic. Splash Sunday takes place at Wicklow Harbour from 11am to 2pm on Sunday, August 3, offering the opportunity to try your hand at water-based activities. Any entrants into Sunday's raft race should take note that all rafts must be constructed from unaltered 40 gallon steel or plastic drums, and they should not consist of more than eight drums. No covering or streamlining will be allowed on the submerged or underwater section of the raft. Paddles and oars should be used for propulsion and can be supplemented by sails. No mechanical means of propulsion may be used and not more than two swimmers at any one time may push the raft. Visit in order to register your raft.

See pictures as Wicklow golf clubs do their fair share for very worthy causes
Today at 02:30 It was a busy weekend on the county's golf courses, with plenty throwing their shoulder to the wheel for great causes – and going about it in their unique way. Bray Golf Club certainly can't be accused of not thinking outside the box, holding an event that saw the golf played off by the late hour of because the club held a day's golf inspired by the ever-popular Darkness Into Light walks and, like those walks, this event raised funds for suicide-and-self-harm-prevention charity Pieta.
