"Created something special": Chennai Bulls head coach Ben Gollings on RPL's transformative impact in India
Under the bright lights and roaring energy of the Rugby Premier League (RPL) final, the Chennai Bulls rose to the occasion with a dominant 41-0 win over the Delhi Redz, sealing the inaugural title in style.
The Bulls, who had grown stronger with each passing match, saved their best for last as they outplayed the Redz in every facet of the game in front of a passionate crowd.
'I credit GMR and Rugby India in terms of the vision they had and how it's played out over the last two weeks. It has been absolutely fantastic and I think for the sport, it's huge. We have such opportunities in 15s but in sevens, this was much needed since the players can now play with the world's best and ply their trade in the Olympics as well. The opportunity to earn well in the sports they love to play is fantastic. For the corporates, I think this is a great opportunity to get on board and I hope this grows and I look forward to seeing it again in the future,' Gollings said as quoted from a press release by RPL.
'They have created something special here and the exposure it's given to rugby in India. Now is the time to harness this and strike while the iron's hot, get the word out, get young people playing rugby. We've been here throwing rugby balls in the crowd, it would be lovely to see these balls thrown in the streets like they play cricket in the streets. That's where it starts, it starts in the backyard with kids just having fun and then it starts to get more important as you start to get into the high performance but the lesson is, let's keep it going and I think rugby is going to be a big game here on the map in India,' Gollings added.
The Bulls' campaign was not only defined by their tries and points score, but also their unity in the locker room, with players from different cultures bonding over the game. Star player Terry Kennedy, who brought his international experience to the Indian stage, reflected on the journey with pride.
'I loved embracing and experiencing all the different cultures and characters within our team, how different people were but how much we embraced each other for everyone's individuality and the personality traits that they bring. Despite the language barriers, rugby brought us all together and we had that connection all the way through,' Kennedy expressed.
He also spoke on the standard of rugby played in the league and said, 'The competitiveness was unbelievable, I think all six teams were really good on their day and we had a ton of really close matches. I think it's probably going to grow over time and from next season the teams will probably develop that cohesiveness quicker because they'll have this year to reflect, so the competitiveness and the quality is only going to go up over the years.'
Shahnawaz Ahmed, one of India's renowned rugby players, echoed the sentiment as he spoke about the impact of the league, on not just the Indians participating in the league, but also the ones watching from their homes.
'Without RPL, we would have to go through a lot of stages before competing amongst such big international stars. But because of this league, we have had the exposure of playing with the world's best. The learnings and observations from this league is going to have a huge benefit for the domestic clubs and the national team of India,' Ahmed said.
'Because of RPL our juniors, our teammates will get hope that they can also play at this level. They will now be more motivated since because of RPL, rugby is becoming a household name and its popularity in India has increased a lot,' he added. (ANI)

Kevin Pietersen apologised for on-air 'joker' jibe, Ambati Rayudu says he could've fired back: 'You did nothing for RCB'
Former India batter Ambati Rayudu took a dig at ex-England captain Kevin Pietersen over his viral on-air 'joker' comment aimed at him after the IPL 2024 final between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai. Rayudu revealed that professional courtesy had stopped him from hitting back at the time. Ambati Rayudu recalled an IPL 2024 banter with Kevin Pietersen After Kolkata beat Sunrisers to lift their third title in history, Pietersen, while in conversation with Matthew Hayden and Rayudu on Star Sports, mocked the Indian for switching allegiances. 'I have at least held firm. I wore it and I owned it. You are a joker, always a joker,' Pietersen told Rayudu, pointing towards the jacket he wore. The former Chennai Super Kings batter responded, saying, 'I am supporting both the teams. I am supporting good cricket." The 'joker' comment sparked widespread discussion on social media, with fans and analysts debating the exchange. Recalling the episode in Shubhankar Mishra's podcast, Rayudu explained why he changed his jacket during his broadcasting duty, saying it had nothing to do with which side he supported. He further said that in reply he could have questioned Pietersen's contributions for Royal Challengers Bangalore during his IPL stint for the franchise between 2009 and 2010. The veteran batter, who won six IPL titles with CSK and Mumbai Indians, said he chose to maintain professional decorum and respect broadcast etiquette during the incident. 'That day we had not picked teams. Chennai was hot, so I had two jackets. On air, he said whatever, but we could also tell him things because he played for RCB and did not do anything. I was maintaining professional decorum. He apologised later, also, for saying that on air. We were just having banter, but people took it in some way. But it affected him more and not me,' Rayudu said. Pietersen's IPL career spanned three franchises. He started with RCB, scoring 329 runs with two fifties across two seasons, before moving to Delhi Daredevils (2012–2014), and later representing the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016. Despite flashes of brilliance, his IPL career was often critiqued for inconsistency, which added weight to Rayudu's on-air jab.

India's Asia Cup Squad 2025: R Ashwin Makes Stunning Selection Call, Snubs This Top Star
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his opinion on the burning selection topic in the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025. As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gears up to pick the squad for the continental event on Tuesday, Ashwin made some bold selection calls as he named his 15-member squad for the tournament. For Ashwin, there was no place for Test skipper Shubman Gill, whose case has been highly debated among fans and experts the last few days. But, Ashwin had no hesitation in picking Shreyas Iyer in the roster. At the top, Ashwin had no qualms in picking the duo of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, while Shreyas Iyer came in at the No. 3 spot for the veteran off-spinner. Ashwin also feels Shreyas' inclusion wouldn't leave any spot for Shivam Dube in the squad. "Shreyas at 3. Surya and Tilak can float. Surya and Tilak can change between 4 and 5. If you are bringing Shreyas Iyer on the scheme of things, then Shivam Dube doesn't have a place. He doesn't have a place. He can be in a backup position. Which we can discuss. Because if Shreyas Iyer, Surya and Tilak, if they form your top 5, then it is 6 and 7. 6 and 7 is a block. Akshar Patel and Hardik Pandya. There is no debate in that," Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel, 'Ash Ki Baat'. Among wicket-keepers, the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel and Jitesh Sharma are competing for the spot of Sanju Samson's backup. Ashwin is strongly of the opinion that Jitesh will win that race. "We have sent Sanju up (in the order). So, we will have to discuss who is the backup keeper. There are many candidates for backup keeper. Last time, Dhruv Jhurel was there. KL Rahul is there. Rishabh Pant, I am not sure if he is recovered. "But on one hand, the real person that I think is going to walk into this Indian team is Jitesh Sharma. As per his IPL, and the way he batted, and he can play the role of a finisher. If Jitesh Sharma is your backup keeper, then Shivam Dube goes out of the window. "Shivam Dube cannot come. If Jitesh Sharma is going to be a part of it, Shivam Dubey is out, can't come in. "Because Jitesh Sharma will take care of finishing. Which means, Jitesh Sharma becomes your backup wicket-keeper. Which is your 15th slot," Ashwin added. In the spin bowling unit, Ashwin gave his vote of confidence to Kuldeep Yadav of Washington Sundar while Varun Chakravarthy is a certain pick in the team. "So, at number 8, it is between Washington Sundar and Kuldeep. You know my opinion. Kuldeep Yadav at 8. So, Washington Sundar goes to number 14. At number 9, Varun Chakravarthy. You must have seen in TNPL, the way he batted. He has worked a bit on batting.
